A Day of Discovery in Centum City
센텀시티에서의 하루
Looking for a day of emotional thrills, cultural discovery and commercial cutting edge? Come to Busan’s Centum City, but instead of heading to the department stores, leave the metro at exit 1 of Bexco station and you are in front of the Bexco Auditorium where the adventure begins. Bexco, the Busan Exposition and Convention Center, has three buildings, Halls 1, 2 and the Auditorium. Almost every week Bexco hosts interesting events from baby fairs, food franchise markets, drone competitions, boat shows to oil and gas product suppliers. Entry fees are usually 6,000 KRW or less. It is a convenient window that brings the latest in the consumer market as well as highly specialized technical equipment for industry. 문화생활과 쇼핑을 한 군데서 즐길 수 있는 곳을 찾고 있는가? 그렇다면 센텀시티로 오라! 여정은 도시철도 2호선 벡스코역 1번 출구에 위치한 벡스코 오디토리움 앞에서 시작된다. 부산의 전시컨벤션센터인 벡스코는 제1전시장과 제2전시장, 그리고 오디토리움이라는 세 개의 건물로 구성되어 있다. 벡스코에서는 거의 매주 베이비페어, 푸드마켓, 드론쇼, 보트쇼, 해양플랜트전시회 등 다양하고 흥미로운 주제의 전시들이 개최되는데, 보통은 6,000원 이하로 입장 가능하다. 벡스코는 첨단 기술과 최신 소비 트렌드를 경험할 수 있는 곳이다. 외국인들은 전시 일정을 보려면 “Smart Bexco” 영문 어플리케이션을 다운 받으면 편리하다!
BEXCO
In the Auditorium building next to Café B is the Hanbok Experience Hall, (Tel: 070-8840-1472) a free service offered by the Busan Tourism Organization. Open from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, you can try a variety of traditional Korean clothing and accessories including the tall, horsehair hats, pipes and fans. This is a great place to take visitors and the helpful personnel will dress you and take your pictures in front of a photo scene.
When you come out, turn to your right and cross the plaza and enter Hall 1 at the furthest door on the east side. Here the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency (Tel: 051-749-9169) has set up 10 examples of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality high tech interactive equipment. You can play baseball, ride a space fighter craft and battle aliens, duel it out with vampires and ride a rollercoaster. It is all free and a load of fun. There is a sun-lite Café A in the Hall 1 atrium near the AR/VR exhibition. A great place to read on any kind of day.
오디토리움의 카페 B 옆은 부산관광공사에서 무료로 운영하는 한복 체험관(Tel: 070-8840-1472)이 위치하고 있다. 화요일부터 일요일 오전 10시부터 오후 5시까지 운영되는 한복 체험관에서는 갓, 곰방대, 부채 등 여러 액세서리를 포함한 다양한 한국 전통 복장을 입어볼 수 있어 여행객들을 데리고 가기 좋다. 친절한 직원들이 전통 옷을 입혀주고 포토존에서는 사진도 찍어준다.
오디토리움 오른편에 있는 광장을 건너 동쪽 가장 멀리 있는 문을 통해 제1전시장으로 들어가면 부산정보산업진흥원(Tel: 051-749-9169)에서 운영하는 증강현실(AR; Augmented Reality)과 가상현실(VR; Virtual Reality)을 체험할 수 있는 10가지 첨단 기술 장비가 마련되어 있다. 야구를 하거나 우주 전투선을 타고 외계인과 전쟁을 할 수도 있고, 뱀파이어와 싸우거나 롤러코스터를 탈 수도 있다. 체험료는 무료인데다 무척 재미있다. AR·VR 체험관 옆에는 해가 잘 드는 카페 A가 있다. 어떤 날씨에도 책을 읽기 좋은 장소다.
Space Lee Ufan
When you are done, go out and continue east, crossing the street by the overhead pedestrian bridge and continue to the Busan Museum of of Art. My favorite place is the permanent exposition in the Space Lee Ufan. This is the dark glass building to the south of the main museum building, set back towards the highway and next to Hall 2. Here the public can walk around and through the artist’s work and feel part of the Zen creations. There is also an outdoor sculpture garden in front and another one, the Olympic Park, just south of Hall 2 close to the Suyeong River.
벡스코에서 더 동쪽에 있는 육교를 건너 부산시립미술관으로 가면 필자가 제일 좋아하는 상설전시장인 이우환공간이 나온다. 미술관 본관 남쪽에 있는 어두운 유리 건물로, 제2전시장 옆에 위치한다. 이 곳에서는 작가의 작품 사이사이를 거닐며 불교 사상이 깃든 작품들을 감상할 수 있다. 벡스코 제2전시장 남쪽으로 수영강과 가까운 곳에는 또 다른 야외 조각공원인 올림픽공원도 있다.
The way to Sengbulsa Temple
Next, you have two choices, an uphill walk by a mountain stream to a beautiful temple with free coffee, or, more art. The Sengbulsa Temple is at the top of Haeun-daero 383 beon-gil. This is north of Bexco Hall 1. Cross the intersection and follow the raised highway. You will go through a neighborhood shopping area and then see the stream on your right. You can follow the pedestrian path to the right of the stream to where it crosses back to the road. Immediately after you step off the boardwalk, turn right and go down a few steps and you will find a delightful, intimate noodle shop with a quiet and pleasant view over the stream and onto the fruit trees. One steaming bowl of fresh noodles feeds two people. For the temple, continue uphill for about ten minutes and it is on your right.
If you don’t feel like going up the hill, you might check out the Olympic Memorial Community Center just to the north of the Art Museum’s main building. This sports complex has a swimming pool, four tennis courts, and offers lots of activities at reasonable cost and I have never met an expat in Busan who has ever taken advantage of it. The program listings are not in English unfortunately but it is a great venue for practicing your Korean. With my very limited Korean, I signed up for tennis that included the balls, coach and fellow players for 50,000 KRW/month and felt very welcomed.
다음으로는 두 가지 선택지가 있다. 물줄기를 따라 언덕을 올라가면 아름다운 절에서 무료로 커피를 마시거나 예술 감상을 즐길 수 있다. 성불사는 해운대로 383번길 꼭대기에 있는 사찰이다. 이 코스는 벡스코 제1전시장 북쪽 방면에서 시작하는 코스로 교차로를 건너 산 쪽으로 올라가는 고가도로를 따라가면 좌측으로는 쇼핑 상가, 우측으로는 조그만 하천이 나온다. 우측 보행자 도로를 따라가다 보면 나오는 산책로 초입에서 우측으로 꺾어 계단을 내려가면 밝고 친근한 분위기의 국숫집이 나온다. 이 국숫집은 강과 과일나무들을 한 눈에 볼 수 있어 조용하고 평화로운 광경을 자아낸다. 갓 나은 따뜻한 국수 한 그릇은 두 명이 먹어도 충분한 양이다. 성불사는 이 국숫집에서 도보 10분 거리에 위치하고 있다.
언덕을 올라가고 싶지 않다면, 부산시립미술관 본관 북쪽에 위치한 부산사회체육센터로 가도 좋다. 부산사회체육센터는 복합체육시설로, 시민들이 합리적인 가격에 수영과 테니스 등 다양한 체육활동을 즐길 수 있다. 하지만 필자는 아직까지는 이 곳을 이용하는 부산 거주 외국인들을 만난 적은 없다. 안타깝게도 센터 프로그램들이 영어로 제공되지는 않지만 긍정적으로 생각하자면 이 참에 한국어를 연습해볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다. 나의 부족한 한국어 실력으로도 월 5만원에 즐겁게 테니스를 배울 수 있었다.
The last stop on this outing is a 15-minute walk east from the Art Museum/Olympic Center complex. Go under the highway flyover and follow Haeundaero towards the beach. At the first intersection, turn right towards the marina. Walk to the first intersection where the Burger King is on your right. Attached to the Burger King building is the GOEUN Museum of Photography, (16 Haeun-daero 452 beon-gil, closed on Monday, Tel: 051-746-0055), a very bright, calm space offering rotating exhibitions of contemporary photography with free entry and coffee. There is a pleasant outdoor terrace on the second floor to just relax. Opposite the museum entrance, at the other end of the parking lot, is the ART SPACE of the Alliance Française of Busan, (16 Haeun-daero 452 beon-gil, closed on Monday, Tel: 051-746-0342). This offers exhibits by different French and local artists and a library on the second floor of the shipping container architecture.
If you want to end your day at the beach, just retrace your steps back to Haeundae-ro and walk over the pedestrian bridge to the new, green “rails to trails” path that will take you all the way to Haeundae Beach, traffic free. Treat yourself to the best soft ice cream in town for 700 KRW at the Lotteria under the Busan Aquarium and enjoy it outside in the sun by the promenade. Another great day in Busan for less than 10,000 KRW, including the noodle soup!
이번 탐험의 마지막 코스는 부산시립미술관/부산사회체육센터에서 동쪽 방면으로 약 15분 정도를 걸어간다. 고가도로 아래 해운대로를 따라 해안가로 향하다 첫 번째 교차로에서 마리나 방면으로 오른쪽으로 꺾으면 버거킹이 있다. 버거킹 옆에는 고은사진미술관(해운대로 452번길 16, 월요일 휴관, Tel: 051-746-0055)이 있다. 입장료 없이 커피 한 잔과 함께 사진예술 작품들을 감상할 수 있는 밝고 차분한 공간이다. 2층에는 편히 휴식할 수 있는 쾌적한 야외 테라스가 마련되어 있다. 주차장 반대편 입구로 나가면 부산 프랑스문화원 ART SPACE(해운대로 452번길 16, 월요일 휴관, Tel: 051-746-0342)가 있다. 다양한 프랑스 작가들의 작품들을 감상할 수 있으며, 컨테이너 모양 건물의 2층에는 도서관이 있다.
바닷가에서 하루를 마무리하고 싶다면 해운대로로 되돌아가서 육교를 건너면 된다. 차가 지나다니지 않는 푸른 산책로로 해운대해수욕장까지 갈 수 있다. 씨라이프부산아쿠아리움 지하 1층 롯데리아에서 부산 최고의 소프트 아이스크림을 700원에 사서 햇살이 내리쬐는 산책로를 거닐며 맛볼 수 있다. 10,000원도 되지 않는 돈으로 국수 한 그릇까지 포함된 부산 탐험을 멋지게 완수해보자!
