Today, over 60,000 foreigners live in Busan. And many people from Busan go abroad. This issue of Busan Beat focuses on "Expat Life" with interviews of expats living in Busan and Busanites living in Auckland, one of Busan's 26 sister cities.

  I have lived in Busan my whole life, and except for when I studied as an exchange student and participated in an internship program I have never lived abroad. On the other hand, I work with expats in Busan who have all lived in foreign countries for several years and are used to adapting to new circumstances. Here are some snapshots of expat's lives.

  오늘날, 부산에는 육만 명에 달하는 외국인이 거주하고 있다. 마찬가지로 해외로 나서는 부산 시민들도 적지 않다. 그래서 Busan Beat 이번 호에서는 부산시의 자매도시 중 하나인 오클랜드를 선정해, 부산에 거주하는 오클랜드 사람과, 오클랜드에 거주하는 부산 사람들의 인터뷰를 통해 “자매도시에서의 삶”에 대해 살펴보기로 했다.

  필자는 부산에서 평생을 살아왔다. 교환학생, 인턴십을 제외하면 해외에 거주해본 적은 없지만, 지금은 수년 동안 타국에 머물며 새로운 환경에 적응하는 데에 익숙한 외국인들과 함께 일하고 있다. 그들의 삶을 함께 들여다보자!

  Auckland, New Zealand and Busan have been sister cities since 1996. Our cities have a lot in common. Both are on the water, have active port facilities, are dotted with hills and have a colonial history. Auckland is a popular destination for Busanites looking for a healthy and safe environment to spend their holidays, go on a working holiday and to study English. The big Korean community in Auckland offers a variety of Korean dishes and the atmosphere of "back home".

  Many Koreans have permanently settled in Auckland. Thanks to the help of the Auckland Council which runs their sister city program we found two Auckland residents from Busan and asked about their experience adapting to the Kiwi life style.

  뉴질랜드의 오클랜드와 부산은 1996년 자매도시 협정을 체결했고, 거래가 활발한 항구, 산이 많고 물과 가까운 지리 요건, 또 식민지 역사 등 서로 많은 공통점을 지닌다. 휴양지나 워킹홀리데이, 어학연수로 건강하고 안전한 장소를 고민하는 부산 사람들에게 오클랜드는 인기가 좋다. 또, 오클랜드 내 한인 사회 규모가 큰 덕에 다양한 한식을 즐길 수 있어 오클랜드를 방문하는 한국인들은 고향에 돌아온 듯한 분위기를 느낄 수도 있다.

  많은 한국인이 오클랜드에 자리를 잡고 살아가고 있다. 자매도시 프로그램을 운영하는 오클랜드시의 도움으로 오클랜드에 거주하는 부산 출신 사람들을 찾을 수 있었고, 뉴질랜드 라이프 스타일에 적응하고 있는 그들의 삶에 대해 엿볼 수 있었다.

  Austin Kim was born in Busan and still has family here. It has been several years since he has been back but he still remembers fondly his family's outings, Haeundae Beach and his grandmother's food. His family moved to Auckland when New Zealand was recruting Asian immigrants in the 1990's. Austin was 16 at the time and found the people very welcoming, a beautiful natural environment and quickly felt a sense of belonging. He went back to Korea for one year but decided to return to Auckland for the work life balance. He is now working with the Auckland Council as an advisor on the Council's governance. When asked about the differences between his home town of Busan and his adopted Auckland, Austin stresses Auckland's relaxed lifestyle, accessibility of green spaces and the friendliness of the people. Mr. Kim appreciates all the city is doing to improve traffic flow, and the general livability of the city, especially the downtown area. Austin is still attached to Busan and identifies with his Korean culture, but he is a bicultural Kiwi now.

  오스틴 김(Austin Kim)씨는 부산에서 태어났고 그의 가족들은 여전히 부산에 머물고 있다. 그가 부산을 떠나온 지 수년이 흘렀지만, 여전히 그에게 부산에서 가족들과 함께하던 나들이, 해운대 바닷가 그리고 할머니의 음식은 잊을 수 없는 추억들이다. 뉴질랜드가 아시안 이주자들을 대거 고용하던 1990년대 오스틴 씨는 가족과 함께 오클랜드로 이주해왔다. 오스틴 씨는 당시 16살이었고, 뉴질랜드 사람들의 따뜻한 환영과 아름다운 자연환경 덕에 빠르게 오클랜드 사회에 소속될 수 있었다. 후에 그는 일 년 동안 한국에 돌아가 머물렀지만 일과 삶의 균형을 지키기 위해 다시 오클랜드로 돌아오기로 했고, 현재 오클랜드시의 고문으로 일하고 있다. 고향 부산과 오클랜드의 차이점에 관해 묻자, 오클랜드의 여유로운 생활방식과 자연에 대한 접근성, 그리고 친절한 사람들을 꼽았다. 오스틴 씨는 오클랜드시가 교통 상황 개선에 애쓰는 점, 특히 시내 근처 주거 환경 개선을 위해 하는 모든 것들에 만족하고 있었다. 여전히 오스틴 씨에게 부산은 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 곳이고, 또 오스틴 씨가 한국 문화 그 자체이기도 하기에 그는 이제 뉴질랜드와 한국이라는 두 문화를 동시에 가지고 있는 뉴질랜드인이라고 할 수 있다.

  Another native of Busan who is now a permanent resident of Auckland is Hak Jun Lee. Mr. Lee came to Auckland with his family when he was 17 years old. He spent his first year just trying to improve his English. He continued his studies in law and now works with the firm Hesketh Henry. Mr. Lee really appreciates the work and life balance of Auckland. He has an Auckland born son of 8 who is more Kiwi than Korean and his wife is from Changwon, near Busan. The family enjoys the out-of-door life style of Auckland and the beach. Hak Jun also like the fact that there is no obligation to go out with office colleagues after work and he leaves the office usually around 6 P.M. and can get home early enough to play with his son. He returns to Korea every year. When he is back, he enjoys seeing his old friends and family and the home cooked meals. He misses not having Korean friends to watch Busan Lotte Giant games. One thing Mr. Lee has not adapted to is seeing Kiwis walking in town and in shops in bare feet!

  여기 또 다른 부산 출신 오클랜드 사람이 있다. 바로 이학준(Hak Jun Lee)씨다. 학준씨는 17살 때 가족과 함께 오클랜드로 이주했다. 이민 첫해는 영어 공부에 많은 시간을 할애했고, 후에 법학을 전공한 후 현재 Hesketh Henry 로펌에서 일하고 있다. 한국인보다는 뉴질랜드인에 더 가까운 8살 아들과 부산 바로 옆 도시인 창원 출신 아내와 함께 사는 학준씨는 오클랜드에서는 일과 개인 생활을 균형 있게 관리할 수 있다는 사실에 만족한다. 학준씨 가족은 오클랜드 해변을 산책하는 등 다양한 야외 활동을 즐긴다. 퇴근 후 직장 동료들과 불필요한 회식을 가지는 문화가 없다는 점, 보통 6시쯤 퇴근해 어린 아들과 보낼 수 있는 시간이 많다는 점 역시 그가 오클랜드 생활에 만족하는 또 다른 장점들이다. 그리고 매년 한국을 방문해 친구들, 가족들을 만나고 집밥을 먹으며 시간을 보내기도 한다. 하지만 롯데 자이언츠를 함께 응원할 친구가 없다는 점이 아쉽다. 학준씨가 오클랜드 생활에서 여전히 적응하지 못하는 것이 있다면, 길거리와 상점에 거리낌 없이 맨발로 드나드는 뉴질랜드 사람들이라고!

  Twenty-three year old Bohyun Gong, known by her traveling name Tia, has been in New Zealand 7 months now. She recently finished university and before settling into a job, decided to go abroad to get some international experience. She came on a working-holiday visa and signed up for two months of English lessons. At first, she found a job stocking shelves in a Store. After two weeks she changed job and worked in a Korean food market but then moved back to her previous employer where she can practice her English more. Bohyun is living in a youth hostel with many foreigners on similar working holidays. She finds her house mates kind and friendly but messy and very loud on the weekends when there is always a party. In spite of missing her hometown she enjoys the freedom of being alone in a foreign country where she can walk around and nobody knows her.

  This adventurer plans to continue to travel after her working experience is over and feels this has helped her improve her English and develop her self-confidence. Her advice for young people is to take a chance and open themselves up to new experiences.

  23살의 공보현(Bohyun Gong)씨는 현재 7개월 동안 뉴질랜드에 머무는 중이다. (여행 중 사용하는 이름은 Tia이다!) 보현씨는 대학교를 갓 졸업하고 취직 전 더 넓은 세상을 경험하기 위해 해외로 나가리라 결심했고, 워킹홀리데이 비자로 뉴질랜드 와서 두 달간 영어 클래스를 등록했다. 처음에는 2달러샵에서 재고 정리부터 시작했고, 2주 후에는 한국 식료품 점에서 일을 시작했지만, 다시 영어를 좀 더 사용할 수 있는 환경이었던 2달러샵으로 돌아가 일을 계속했다. 보현씨는 현재 워킹홀리데이로 뉴질랜드에 와있는 다른 외국인 친구들과 함께 유스호스텔에 머물고 있다. 호스텔에 함께 머무는 친구들은 모두 친절하지만, 파티가 열리는 주말은 시끄럽고 호스텔이 지저분해지기도 한다. 가끔은 한국이 그리워지기는 해도 아무도 자신을 알아보지 못하는 타지에서 누릴 수 있는 자유를 만끽하고 있다.

  보현씨는 워킹홀리데이 비자가 끝나도 여행을 계속할 예정이라고 한다. 이 모든 경험이 영어 실력 향상과 더불어 자신감을 되찾아 주는 계기가 되고 있기 때문이다. 그녀는 젊은 친구들에게 열린 마음으로 새로운 경험을 가져다 줄 기회를 잡으라고 말한다.

  Derek McGovern was once the manager of a government-owned language school in New Zealand, and his school sent him to Korea on a one-week promotional trip in 1999. He returned in 2001 to live and work here. Derek chose Busan because of its proximity to the sea. After he had completed his Ph.D. in English literature, he returned to Busan again, and in 2014 he joined the faculty of English Language and Literature at Pukyong National University as a full-time professor. Derek likes Busan’s dialect. The Busan dialect’s intonation shows the people of Busan to be livelier and more direct than any other city in Korea. Derek finds Busan is a very convenient city to live in. But, the driving and the sound and sight of very public spitting are the only things that really raise his hackles. He sometimes misses great fish and chips and New Zealand's reasonably priced red wine but, he loves beautiful beaches and the glorious Igidae coastline. In addition, Busan has some magnificent parks—the most impressive of which would have to be the unique U.N. Memorial Park.

  데렉 맥거번(Derek McGovern)씨는 뉴질랜드에 위치한 정부 산하 어학원 매니저였고, 1999년에 어학원 홍보 일정을 위해 일주일간 한국에 머물게 되었다. 그리고 그 후 다시 2001년 한국에 돌아왔다. 바다와 가까운 부산에 살고 싶었던 그는 뉴질랜드에서 영문학 박사 학위를 따고 부산으로 다시 돌아와 2014년 부경대 영어영문학과 교수로 일하기 시작했다. 데렉씨는 부산 사투리를 매우 좋아한다. 부산 사투리는 다른 도시 사람들보다 더 생동감 넘치고 똑 부러지는 부산 사람들의 느낌을 잘 전달해주기 때문이다. 또한 그는 부산이 매우 편리한 도시라고 생각한다. 편리한 대중교통 덕분에 이 큰 도시를 편리하게 가로질러 다닐 수 있기 때문이다. 하지만 부산 사람들의 운전 방식, 소음, 공공장소에서 침을 뱉는 행위 등은 그가 좋아하지 않는 것들이다. 이따금 뉴질랜드에서 먹던 양 많고 값싼 피쉬앤칩스와 레드와인이 그립기는 하지만 부산의 뻥 뚫린 바다(특히 이기대)와 유엔기념공원을 포함한 아름다운 공원들은 여전히 그가 부산을 사랑하는 이유이다.

  Julian Warmington moved to Busan from smaller city in Korea to be nearer his partner. He teaches English at a university and cycles around the city for fun. He lives in Yeongdo, and jogs around its hilly secluded car-free park. The wind and views from between the pine trees on the hills overlooking the coast remind his hometown. But probably his favourite thing about Busan is the variety of all the vegan restaurants, the wonderful burgers of Kong’s Cafe near Dongseo University, or Loving Hut and Yammy Green. All provide wonderful food, free of cholesterol and excess saturated fat, cruelty, and the environmental destruction of old-style meals dependant on animal exploitation.

  It’s difficult to find internationally certified fair trade products in Busan compared to New Zealand, and live music venues are drastically more sparse and often far away within this city which is spread out much like Auckland. The local people of Busan whom he has met have all been kind, courteous, and creative types working with purpose and passion in their lives. He runs the website: Ez2bVeggie.com.

  줄리안 워밍턴(Julian Warmington)씨는 그의 연인과 좀 더 가까워지기 부산으로 이사 왔다. 그는 대학교에서 영어를 가르치고 있고, 사이클을 타며 부산을 여기저기 돌아다니는 것을 좋아한다. 영도에 살아서 태종대를 조깅하는 것도 좋아한다. 소나무 사이로 보이는 해안가 경치와 바람을 느끼다보면 고향인 뉴질랜드의 타운 벨트를 떠올리게 한다고 한다. 그가 부산에 대해 가장 좋아하는 점은 채식주의자들을 위한 다양한 식당이 있다는 점이다. 콩스카페, 러빙헛, 야미 그린 등 부산의 여러 채식 식당에서는 콜레스테롤과 지방 걱정없이, 잔인한 동물 학대, 환경 파괴 없이도 훌륭한 음식을 즐길 수 있다고 한다.

  부산은 뉴질랜드에 비하면 국제적으로 인증된 공정 무역 제품을 찾기가 쉽지 않고, 라이브 뮤직을 들을 수 있는 곳이 많음에도 불구하고 오클랜드처럼 부산 내에서도 서로 멀리 흩어져 있다는 점은 줄리안씨가 부산에서 살면서 아쉬운 점들이다. 그러나 그가 만난 부산 사람들은 모두 친절하고 예의 바르며, 열정과 목적의식을 가지고 일하는 창의적인 사람들이었다. 한편, 워밍턴씨는 자신만의 웹사이트를 운영하고 있다.

  Tim Clauson moved to Busan to work as an assistant professor at Busan University of Foreign Studies. He lived in the north of Busan, near Beomeosa Temple for 2.5 years until he moved to Seoul. The Beomeosa area is quite far from a lot of the more popular places like Haeundae, Seomyeon, and Gwangalli but most weekends he would bicycle along the Suyeong River to get to the beaches. Busan has relatively mild winters compared to Seoul, and numerous beaches all within easy access of the city. There’s also the Lotte baseball team and the exciting atmosphere at Sajik stadium.

  At first, Tim found people in Busan a bit brash because of their mannerisms and how they speak with their dialect. But once you get used to this, you’ll find that they’re some of the most genuine and down to earth people on the peninsula. He was lucky to have met a number of people who were willing to give up their time and put up with his beginner Korean ability.

  팀 클라우슨(Tim Clauson)씨는 부산외대 조교수로 일을 시작하며 부산으로 왔다. 서울로 이사 가기 전까지 범어사 근처에서 2년 반 정도 살았다. 해운대나 서면, 광안리 등 주요 중심지와는 다소 멀리 떨어진 곳이었지만 주말마다 수영강을 따라 자전거를 타고 해변으로 가곤 했다. 바다와 접근이 쉬운 부산은 서울과 달리 겨울이 다소 따뜻하며, 롯데 야구팀의 도시이기도 해서 사직구장의 야구 열기 역시 인상 깊은 경험이었다.

  처음에 사투리 때문에 부산 사람들이 성격이 급한 사람들처럼 보이기도 했지만, 익숙해지면서 사람들의 진솔함을 느낄 수 있었다. 또한 팀씨는 자신이 한국어를 잘 못해도 기꺼이 시간을 내어 한국어를 가르쳐주고, 부족한 한국어 실력에도 불평 한마디 하지 않는 사람들을 만날 수 있었음을 큰 행운으로 여긴다.

  Graham Young is currently an art teacher at the International School of Busan. He has two adult children who both live in Auckland and his wife is originally from Busan. Graham has always enjoyed exploring unfamiliar places when traveling. He initially came here without much knowledge of Busan and hadn't necessarily planned to stay long term. That was seven years ago and he is still here!

  "Busan is quite different from any place in New Zealand. There are almost as many people living in this city as there are in the whole of my home country. Housing is mostly apartments which are prolific and increasing in number all the time. Busan is an extremely safe place to live." He likes the honesty and integrity of the people in Korea in general. There are so many stories of situations such as people leaving their wallet in a taxi and having it returned to them with the money still in place.

  그래햄 영(Graham Young)씨는 현재 부산국제외국인학교 교사로 재직 중이다. 가족으로는 오클랜드에 거주 중인 성인 자녀 두 명과 부산 출신 아내가 있다. 그래햄씨는 새로운 장소를 여행하는 것을 좋아하기도 해서 국제학교 선생님으로 일하는 것을 항상 고려해왔다고 한다. 솔직히 처음 부산에 왔을 때는 부산에 대해 모르는 것이 더 많았고, 부산은 오래 머물려던 도시는 아니었다. 그러나 벌써 부산에 산 지 7년 되었고 그래햄씨는 여전히 부산에 살고 있다!

  그에게 부산은 뉴질랜드와는 또 다른 매력을 지닌 곳이다. 뉴질랜드 전체 인구수만큼의 사람이 사는 도시이고, 주거 형태가 대부분 많은 사람이 함께 거주하는 아파트라 매우 안전하다. 또 그는 한국 사람들의 정직하고 진실한 면을 좋아하는데 택시 안에서 지갑을 두고 내렸지만 돈 한 푼 없어지지 않고 지갑을 돌려받을 수 있는 도시는 많지 않을 것이다.
