Busan's Big Show of Short Films
부산 단편영화의 힘! 부산국제단편영화제
Late April, the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City and the Moonlight Cinema in Sanbokdoro hosted the 2019 Busan International Short Film Festival(BISFF). With a selection of 149 movies from 41 countries divided into 22 different sections, 28 Q&A sessions with filmmakers, several conferences, masterclasses and a roundtable, there was no shortage of choice for the audience. In total, the 36th edition of the festival welcomed around 160 filmmakers, film professionals, and guests, and it drew in close to 15,000 visitors during its 6-day run. The mayor of Busan Metropolitan City himself, Oh Keo-don, attended the festival twice: first, officially, for the opening ceremony, then a second time for an impromptu screening of Korean short films.
The 39 films in the International Competition and 18 films in the Korean Competition were selected from a record 6,072 submissions. The winners were Augur, a Portugal/France animated film directed by David Doutel and Vasco Sá, and Observation and Memory, an experimental documentary directed by Lee Somyi, respectively. Last year, BISFF became Korea’s first Oscarqualifying festival, making the recipients of the Grand Prix in these two programs eligible to submit their films to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences and to be considered for the short film categories of the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Live a Better Life, directed by Gu Gihyun, a student of Dongeui University Department of Digital Contents, was the winner of BISFF’s other competitive program, ‘Operation Kino’, a special contest of short documentaries open to students in Busan universities. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese short film To Heaven, To Gather by Chang Liyue won the NETPAC Award as part of the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema. Jury members included Korean directors Shin Suwon (Pluto, Madonna, Glass Garden), Yoon Gaeun (The World of Us) and Jéro Yun (Mrs B., Beautiful Days).
지난 4월, 센텀시티 영화의전당과 산복도로 옥상달빛극장에서 2019 부산국제단편영화제가 열렸다. 서로 다른 22개 부문에 41개국 149점의 작품이 출품되었고, 28개의 제작자와의 Q&A 섹션, 다양한 컨퍼런스들, 마스터 클래스들 그리고 라운드테이블 등 다양한 프로그램들이 마련되었다. 제36회 부산국제단편영화제는 160여 명의 영화 제작자, 전문가, 게스트들이 참여했고 6일 간의 영화제 기간 동안 15,000여 명의 관람객이 다녀갔다. 오거돈 부산시장은 개막식에 공식적으로 참석하였으며, 한국 단편영화 상영에도 참석했다.
총 6,072점의 출품작 중 국제경쟁 부문에 39점의 작품, 한국경쟁 부문에 18개 작품이 노미네이트되었다. 국제경쟁 부문은 다비드 두텔 David Doutel 과 바스코 사 Vasco Sá 감독의 포르투갈/프랑스 애니메이션 <전조 Augur>가, 한국경쟁 부문은 이솜이 감독의 실험적인 다큐멘터리 <관찰과 기억 Observationand Memory>이 최우수작품상을 각각 수상했다. 작년 부산국제단편영화제는 한국 최초로 오스카 아카데미가 인정한 공식 인증 국제영화제로 지정되었으며, 이 두 그랑프리 작품들은 미국 영화예술과학아카데미(Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences)에 출품 자격을 얻고 LA 아카데미 시상식 단편영화 카테고리에 노미네이트될 수 있는 가능성을 열었다. 부산 내 대학생들을 대상으로 하는 ‘오퍼레이션 키노’ 부문에서는 동의대학교 디지털문화콘텐츠학과 구기현 감독의 <보담 Live a Better Life>이 최우수작품상을 수상했다. 한편 대만의 창 리웨 Chang Liyue 감독의 <우리 천국에서 모여 To Heaven, To Gather>가 넷팩 NETPAC 경쟁부문의 최고작품상을 수상했다. 한국인 심사위원으로는 신수원 감독(<명왕성>, <마돈나>, <유리정원>), 윤가은 감독(<우리들>), 윤재호 감독(<마담 B>, <뷰티풀 데이즈>)이 포함되었다.
This year BISFF’s signature ‘Guest Country’ program was dedicated to Switzerland. Three sections unveiled the uniqueness of this diverse country, namely its multilingualism and multiculturalism, and its stance on immigration and inclusiveness. Another section titled ‘Prequel’ introduced next year’s Guest Country, Belgium. A highlight of that program was the ‘BISFF Talk: Duet’, the festival’s own take on the masterclass format where two directors (one each from the aforementioned countries) joined for a roundtable discussion with the audience following the screening of their works. This year, these guests were directors Peter Volkart (Switzerland) and Emmanuel Mare (Belgium).
The ‘World Shorts’ program covered a lot of cinematic ground! In keeping with this year’s main theme of ‘‘origins and future of cinema’’ (which also concerned the ‘BITForum@BISFF 2019’, a series of lectures and conferences), the three ‘Prism’ sections focused on experimental films that question the nature of cinema and its illusions. It notably featured several films from acclaimed French duo Patrick Bokanowski (director) and Michèle Bokanowski (music composer), who attended the festival. The three ‘Hub of Asia’ sections dealt mostly with gender (in)equality: the first with films from current Fellows of the Busan Asian Film School (located uphill from Geumnyeonsan station, next to the prestigious Korean Academy of Film Arts), the second with LGTBQ+ films from Taiwan, and the third with films from Iranian women directors. The two ‘Curtain Call’ sections presented films which won top prizes last year at the world’s leading festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance. BISFF 2018’s Guest Country had an encore with ’Short Letter from New Zealand’, a collection of the best and most recent Kiwi short films courtesy of Show Me Shorts Film Festival artistic director Gina Dellabarca, who was a jury member in BISFF 2017.
올해 부산국제단편영화제의 시그니처 프로그램인 ‘주빈국 프로그램’ 의 국가는 스위스였다. 다양한 언어와 문화가 공존하는 스위스만의 매력을 파헤치고 이민과 포괄주의적 관점에서 스위스의 입장을 살펴보는 3개의 섹션으로 구성되었다. 또 다른 하나의 섹션은 내년 주빈국인 벨기에 영화를 소개하는 ‘프리퀄’ 섹션이었다. 주빈국 프로그램의 하이라이트는 ‘BISFF 토크: 듀엣’으로, 스위스의 페터 폴카르트 Peter Volkart, 벨기에의 엠마누엘 마레 Emmanuel Marre 두명의 감독이 참가하여 라운드테이블을 통해 영화 제작에 대한 두 감독의 교류의 장을 이어나갔다.
‘월드쇼츠’ 부문은 다양한 장소에서 개최되었다. 올해의 테마이면서 BISFF 포럼에서도 다뤘던 "단편영화의 과거와 현재 그리고 미래"라는 주제를 바탕으로, 세 개의 ‘프리즘’ 섹션에서는 영화의 본질과 환상에 대해 질문을 던지는 실험적인 영화들에 초점을 맞추어 영화제에서 호평을 받은 프랑스 듀오 파트릭 보카노프스키 Patrick Bokanowski 감독과 미쉘 보카노프스키 Michèle Bokanowski 작곡가의 작품들을 다루었다. 세 개의 ‘아시아단편’ 섹션에서는 전반적으로 양성 (불)평등에 대한 문제를 다뤘다. 첫 번째 작품은 금련산 지하철역 한국영화아카데미 옆에 위치한 부산아시아영화학교 특별전이었고, 두번째 작품은 대만의 LGTBQ+ 이야기였으며, 세 번째 작품은 이란 여성 감독의 작품이었다. 두 개의 ‘커튼 콜’ 섹션에서는 작년 칸, 베를린, 선댄스등 세계적인 영화제에서 수상한 작품들이 상영되었다. 마지막 월드쇼츠 부문의 섹션은 2018 부산국제단편영화제 주빈국 프로그램의 주인공이었던 ‘뉴질랜드에서 온 짧은 편지’라는 섹션의 앵콜 섹션으로, 2017년 부산국제단편영화제의 심사위원이기도 했던 지나 델라바르카 Gina Dellabarca 감독이 집행위원장으로 있는 쇼미쇼츠영화제 측에서 선별한 영화들로 구성되었다.
BISFF had something for all audiences. Children and their parents enjoyed the ‘Short-Kids’ section made of films starring toys, dolls and teddy bears! The more mature ‘Short-Youth’ section introduced films about differences between people and culture, and how understanding them can bring us together and inspire true friendships. Finally, the festival treated its audience to two original sections: a showcase of short films in 3D and a projection of Magic Lantern (meant to be participatory for the audience!) requiring special equipment from the 19th century. Perhaps more so than any other program this year, the Magic Lantern generated a lot of curiosity from all attendees and ended up being a major attraction of the festival for its impressive apparatus, for the undeniably charming images, and for its live narration performed by actor Choi Hyuk, who trained in France and who also starred in BISFF’s official trailer. However, the main architect of the Magic Lantern program was Roger Gonin, a founder of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, returning to BISFF after having participated as jury member in 2013. For the occasion, his book on the unknown history of Magic Lantern peddlers has also been translated to Korean and published by BISFF festival director, Cha Minchol.
부산국제단편영화제는 모든 관객층들을 고려한다. 어린이 섹션에서는 영화에 등장하는 장난감, 인형, 테디베어를 어린이와 보호자가 함께 만들 수 있고, 청소년 섹션에서는 문화의 차이를 배우고 서로 다른 문화권의 사람들이 어떻게 서로를 이해하고 진정한 우정을 발전시켜나가야 하는지에 대해 소개한다. 또한 영화의 기원에 대한 섹션도 있다. 바로 3D 특별상영과 관객들이 직접 참여 가능한 19세기에 사용되었던 특별한 소품을 이용한 매직랜턴이다! 올해 그 어떤 프로그램보다도 참가자들의 기대를 모은 것이 바로 매직랜턴 프로그램이었다. 누가 봐도 매혹적인 이미지와 독특한 도구를 사용한 이 프로그램은 영화제의 중심적인 역할을 했다. 프랑스에서 연수를 받고 BISFF의 공식 트레일러에도 등장한 배우 최혁의 생생한 내레이션도 인상적이었다. 그러나 매직랜턴 프로그램의 하이라 이트는 2013년 BISFF 심사위원이 었던 클레르몽페랑 국제단편영화제 창시자인 로저 고냉 Roger Gonin 의 매직랜턴 공연으로, 이 공연을 위해 BISFF 차민철 감독이 매직랜턴 장수에 관한 로저 고냉의 책을 한국어로 번역하기도 했다.

All in all, the 36th Busan International Short Film Festival was an apparent success. A 3-minute highlight video recapping the whole event is available on BISFF’s YouTube channel. Throughout the summer and autumn, the festival team will be busy curating and organizing the Moonlight Cinema, a series of outdoor screenings of short films, until it will be time for them to start preparing the 2020 BISFF.
