간단히 도시 비교하기: 부산과 멜번
Now that I’m writing this article, it’s been 3 months since I left my home in Busan and moved to Melbourne, Australia. I have lived in South Korea for 10 years… yes that long! And even though I travelled to many cities around Korea, I lived in the same city for the whole 10 years.
이 글을 쓰고 있는 지금은 내가 부산의 집을 떠나 호주 멜번으로 옮긴 지 3개월이 된 시점이다. 한국에서는 10년을 살았다. 그렇다, 그렇게나 긴 시간을! 게다가 그 동안 한국 곳곳을 여행하며 다녔음에도, 그 10년 내내 나는 같은 도시에서 살았다.
I studied, worked and experienced a lot in my beautiful Busan, I miss Busan a lot.
Now that I’m living in Melbourne, a city that has been the most livable city for years (it was voted the 3rd livable city in the world in 2023). I have a lot in mind comparing both cities. So here’s a comparison of both cities:

이제는 가장 살기 좋다는 이곳 멜번에 몇 년째 살고 있으니 (멜번은 2023년 전세계에서 가장 살기 좋은 도시 3위에 올랐다.) 두 도시를 비교할 만한 여러 가지 생각이 떠오른다. 그러니 한 번 두 도시를 비교해보자.
Land Size and Geography
땅 면적과 지리
I’m starting with this point, as this can describe so many of the differences I’m going to mention later. Long story short, Australia is 77 times bigger than South Korea! Australia's geography is a striking display of Earth's diversity. The continent offers an array of landscapes, from the Great Dividing Range in the east to arid deserts in the interior, lush rainforests in the north, rugged gorges in the northwest, dramatic coastal cliffs in the south, and the expansive Nullarbor Plain in the west. These diverse landforms capture the essence of Australia's geographical richness.
On the other hand, South Korea's breathtaking natural beauty spans from serene cherry blossom-lined streets to lush mountain landscapes and pristine coastal shores. Its diverse scenery invites awe in every direction, making it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and travelers.
먼저, 나중에 언급할 여러 차이점들을 설명해 줄 수 있는 이 부분부터 짚고 넘어가겠다. 간단히 말해 호주는 한국보다 77배 더 크다! 호주는 지구의 다양성을 보여주는 놀라운 지리적 특성을 간직하고 있다. 동쪽의 대분수 산맥부터 내륙의 사막, 북쪽의 무성한 우림과 북서쪽의 바위투성이 협곡, 남쪽의 인상적인 해안 절벽, 서쪽의 광활한 널라보 평원에 이르기까지 수없이 많은 풍경을 자랑한다. 이렇게나 다양한 지형은 호주의 지리적 풍요로움을 단적으로 보여준다.
반면, 한국의 숨막히는 자연의 아름다움은 벚꽃이 줄지어 선 고요한 골목부터 나무가 우거진 산, 맑은 해안가에 이르기까지 다양하다. 한국의 가지각색 풍경은 모든 방면에서 경외감을 일으키며 자연을 사랑하는 이들과 여행자들의 마음을 사로잡는다.
Nightlife
두 도시의 밤
Nightlife in Busan and Melbourne offers distinctly diverse experiences. Busan, a bustling coastal city in South Korea, is renowned for its vibrant nightlife scene, with an abundance of neon-lit streets, lively markets, and a strong focus on Norebang (karaoke bars), beautiful coffee shops and restaurants. You'll find locals and tourists alike enjoying the energetic atmosphere until the early hours of the morning. You can enjoy relaxing at Gwangalli Beach or walking in Seomyeon area late at night, even on weekdays, and you never feel alone as you see tens of other people around, enjoying themselves. Even late at night, you always have an option.
부산과 멜번의 밤 문화는 뚜렷하게 구분된다. 한국의 북적이는 해안도시인 부산은 네온사인이 비추는 거리, 활기 넘치는 시장, 많은 이들이 찾는 노래방, 아름다운 카페와 식당으로 가득한 강렬한 밤 풍경으로 유명하다. 이른 아침까지 부산 시민들과 여행객들이 함께 에너지 넘치는 분위기를 즐기는 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 광안리 해변에서 휴식을 취하거나 밤 늦게 서면을 걸어도 좋다. 평일 밤일지라도 즐겁게 시간을 보내는 수많은 사람들에 둘러싸여 결코 혼자라는 생각이 들지 않을 것이다. 밤늦은 시간에도 언제나 선택지가 있다.
On the other hand, Melbourne, Australia is celebrated for its diverse range of bars, live music venues, and theaters. Melburnians are known for their appreciation of craft beer, and you can explore hidden laneway bars, art exhibitions, and a thriving stand-up comedy scene. While Busan's nightlife is characterized by its exuberance and Korean pop culture, Melbourne's nightlife is a fusion of cultures, art, and creativity, making it more comfortable for people from different countries. Compared to Busan, there are very few spots in the city that you can find late night restaurants or activities.
반면 호주 멜번은 다양한 바, 라이브 음악을 들을 수 있는 장소, 극장이 있는 곳이다. 멜번 사람들은 생맥주의 진가를 잘 알아보는 것으로 유명하다. 숨어있는 레인웨이 바, 예술 전시, 성황리에 열리는 스탠드업 코미디의 세상을 여행할 수 있다. 부산의 밤 문화가 생생한 활기와 한국 대중 문화로 대표된다면, 멜번의 밤 문화는 문화, 예술, 창의성이 융합되어 서로 다른 나라에서 온 사람들을 보다 편안하게 해 준다. 부산과 비교해볼 때, 밤 늦게까지 문을 여는 식당이나 즐길 거리는 찾기 어렵다.
Weather
날씨
When it comes to weather, Busan and Melbourne exhibit striking differences due to their geographical locations. Busan, situated on the southeast coast of South Korea, experiences a temperate climate with distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures averaging around 25-30°C (77-86°F), making it an ideal time for beachgoers to enjoy the beautiful coastlines. Winters in Busan are cooler, with temperatures ranging from 0-10°C (32-50°F), occasionally dropping below freezing. Spring and autumn offer mild, pleasant weather, making them favorable for outdoor activities.
날씨 얘기를 하자면 부산과 멜번은 각각의 지리적 특성으로 인해 매우 뚜렷한 차이점을 보여준다. 대한민국 남동쪽 해안가에 위치한 부산은 뚜렷한 계절과 더불어 온화한 기후를 가지고 있다. 따뜻하고 습한 여름 기온은 평균 25-30°C (77-86°F) 정도로, 해수욕을 즐기는 사람들이 아름다운 바다를 즐기기에 안성맞춤이다. 보다 추운 겨울의 평균 기온은 0-10°C (32-50°F)이며, 종종 영하로 떨어지기도 한다. 봄 가을은 온화하고 쾌적해 야외 활동을 즐기기 좋다.
Melbourne, on the other hand, is known for its highly variable climate. It features a temperate oceanic climate, characterized by four seasons in one day. Summers in Melbourne, from December to February, can be hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F), and occasionally soaring even higher. Winters, from June to August, are cooler, with temperatures around 10-15°C (50-59°F), and sometimes cooler in the evenings. Spring and autumn provide mild and pleasant weather. However, Melbourne is infamous for its unpredictable weather patterns, so carrying layers and being prepared for changes is advisable.
반면 멜번은 무척이나 변화무쌍한 기후로 유명하다. 온대 해양 기후로 하루에도 사계절을 경험할 수 있다. 멜번의 여름은 12월부터 2월까지로, 30°C (86°F)가 넘는 온도로 덥고, 때로는 이보다 더욱 찌는 듯한 더위를 선사한다. 6월부터 8월까지는 보다 시원한 겨울로, 기온은 대략 10-15°C (50-59°F) 정도이고 저녁에는 이보다 더 추울 수 있다. 봄과 가을은 온화하고 쾌적하다. 하지만 멜번은 예측 불가능한 날씨로 악명이 높은 만큼, 겉옷을 가지고 다니며 날씨 변화에 대비하는 것이 좋다.
In summary, while Busan enjoys a more stable and predictable climate with defined seasons, Melbourne's weather can be quite changeable, offering both hot and cold extremes throughout the year. Travelers should consider their weather preferences when planning a visit to either city.
간단히 말해 부산에서는 뚜렷한 계절로 보다 안정적이고 예측 가능한 기온을 즐길 수 있는 반면, 멜번의 날씨는 상당히 변덕스럽고, 일년 내내 극도로 덥거나 추울 수 있다. 두 도시를 방문하려는 여행객들은 자신이 어떤 날씨를 선호하는지 고려해 보아야 할 것이다.
Food
음식
Busan and Melbourne offer distinct culinary experiences. Busan tempts visitors with a delectable array of Korean seafood delicacies, such as fresh sashimi and spicy seafood stews. Its street food scene is vibrant, featuring dishes like hotteok (sweet pancakes) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes). The colorful big tables with so many different kinds of side dishes is something really unique and spectacular compared to Melbourne.
부산과 멜번은 뚜렷하게 구분되는 식문화를 가지고 있다. 부산은 신선한 회나 매운탕과 같은 해산물의 향연으로 방문자들을 유혹한다. 호떡이나 떡볶이 같은 길거리 음식도 잔뜩 있다. 여러 색색깔 반찬으로 가득 찬 커다란 식탁은 멜번에 비해 정말이지 독특한 장관이다.
In contrast, Melbourne is a melting pot of global flavors, known for its diverse food culture. You can savor world-class coffee, explore multicultural food markets, and indulge in Australian favorites like meat pies and Vegemite. Whether you seek traditional Korean flavors or a global gastronomic adventure, both cities provide a rich culinary tapestry to satisfy your taste buds.
반면 전세계의 입맛이 뒤섞인 용광로와 같은 멜번은 다양한 식문화로 잘 알려져 있다. 세계 최상급의 커피를 맛볼 수 있고, 다문화 식료품을 탐방하고, 미트 파이나 베지마이트 같은 호주 대표음식을 마음껏 먹을 수 있다. 한국 전통의 맛을 찾건, 전 세계를 아우르는 미식 모험을 원하건 간에, 두 도시 모두 혀를 만족시킬 수 있는 풍족한 먹거리를 자랑한다.
Delivery System

First let’s talk about food delivery systems. South Korea's food delivery system is a modern marvel, renowned for its efficiency and convenience. With a myriad of apps and services, residents and visitors can access a wide array of cuisines, from traditional Korean dishes to international fare, delivered swiftly to their doorstep. This culture of quick and reliable food delivery has become a defining feature of South Korea's culinary landscape, ensuring that delicious meals are just a few taps away.
먼저 배달 시스템에 대해 이야기해보자. 한국의 배달 시스템은 현대적인 경이로움 그 자체로, 효율성과 편리성이 높기로 유명하다. 수많은 어플과 서비스를 통해 부산 시민들과 여행객들은 한국 전통 음식부터 전세계 음식에 이르기까지 다양한 음식을 집앞으로 바로 주문해 맛볼 수 있다. 이처럼 빠르고 든든한 음식 배달 문화는 한국의 식문화 풍경에서 빼놓을 수 없는 특징이 되어, 몇 번의 클릭만으로도 맛있는 음식을 보장해 준다.
On the other hand, food delivery system in Melbourne is modern, with a wide range of different nationalities’ food, but the delivery system and availability at different times cannot be compared with Korea’s.
반면, 멜번은 다양한 나라의 음식을 맛볼 수 있는 현대적인 배달 시스템을 갖추고 있지만 시스템과 시간대별 가용성이 달라 한국과 비교할 수 없다.
Technology
기술
Busan and Melbourne are both technologically advanced cities, but they have different areas of focus. In Busan, technology often centers around its robust shipping and logistics industry. The city is home to one of the busiest ports in the world and places a significant emphasis on smart port technologies, automation, and maritime innovation. Additionally, South Korea as a whole is known for its leadership in the electronics and semiconductor industries, with companies like Samsung and LG headquartered in the country.
부산과 멜번 모두 기술적으로 진보한 도시들이지만 중점을 두는 부분에 차이가 있다. 부산의 기술은 탄탄한 선박과 물류 산업에 중점을 둔다. 부산은 세계에서 가장 분주한 항구들 중 하나를 보유하고 있어, 스마트 항구 기술, 자동화, 해양 혁신에 큰 방점을 찍고 있다. 또한 삼성과 LG 본사가 있는 한국은 전자 및 반도체 산업을 이끄는 국가로 잘 알려져 있다.
Melbourne, on the other hand, is a hub for technology startups and innovation. The city is renowned for its thriving tech ecosystem, with a focus on industries like software development, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. It hosts various tech events, including the Melbourne International Hi-Tech Expo, attracting entrepreneurs and investors from around the world. The city also invests in smart city initiatives and sustainability, utilizing technology for urban planning and environmental improvements.
Both cities contribute significantly to their respective countries' technological advancement, but their specialties vary, with Busan excelling in maritime and manufacturing technology and Melbourne thriving in the tech startup and innovation sector.
반면 멜번은 기술 스타트업과 혁신의 중심지다. 소프트웨어 개발, 바이오테크놀로지, 인공지능처럼 번영하는 기술 생태계로 유명하다. 멜번 국제 하이테크 엑스포를 비롯한 다양한 테크 행사가 열려 전 세계의 기업과 투자자가 모여드는 곳이다. 스마트 시티 계획과 지속가능성, 도시 계획 및 환경 발전을 위한 기술 활용에도 투자를 하는 도시다.
두 도시 모두 각자의 기술 발전에 크게 기여하고 있지만, 부산은 해양 산업과 제조 기술, 멜번은 기술 스타트업과 혁신으로 서로 다른 전문 분야를 가지고 있다.
Multicultural Atmosphere
다문화 분위기
Busan and Melbourne both embrace multiculturalism, but their approaches and maturity levels differ. In Busan, multiculturalism is influenced by a growing international tourist presence and an emerging expatriate community, contributing to a developing multicultural environment.
In contrast, Melbourne boasts a well-established and deeply ingrained multicultural identity, with a diverse population resulting from decades of immigration. The city's rich cultural tapestry is woven into its neighborhoods, cuisine, and cultural events, making it a vibrant and celebrated melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions.
부산과 멜번 모두 다문화를 품은 도시지만, 두 도시의 접근법과 발달 정도는 다르다. 부산의 다문화주의는 증가하는 외국인 관광객과 국외 거주자 공동체의 영향을 받아 다문화 환경 형성에 기여하고 있다.
이와는 대조적으로 멜번은 깊게 내재되어 단단해진 다문화 정체성을 자랑하며 수십 년에 걸친 이민의 결과로 이룬 다양한 인종을 아우른다. 멜번의 풍부한 문화적 다양성은 지역 내의 생활, 음식, 문화 행사 등에 스며들어 생기 넘치는 문화, 언어, 전통의 용광로가 된다.
Public Wi-Fi
공공 와이파이
Visitors who travel to South Korea and Busan as an international tourism city are usually surprised by the accessibility of internet with good speed. In Busan, in most public places, restaurants, coffee shops, and beaches, you can access to free public Wi-Fi; even when you are on the roads or mountains. Melbourne is never comparable in public Wi-Fi with that. As the land is much larger, the accessibility is not as available as Busan, so you can access public free Wi-Fi in the CBD (city area) and usually have limited internet access on the roads.
Despite of all the comparisons I mentioned, it is always a great experience to live in different cities and experience different cultures.
한국과 부산을 여행하는 해외 여행객들은 대부분 빠른 속도의 인터넷에 쉽게 접속할 수 있다는 사실에 놀란다. 부산에서는 대부분의 공공장소, 식당, 카페, 해안가 등에서 무료 공공 와이파이를 이용할 수 있다. 심지어 길거리에서나 산 위에서도 가능하다. 멜번의 와이파이는 결코 이에 비할 바가 되지 못한다. 면적이 훨씬 크기 때문에 멜번의 와이파이는 부산에서만큼 쉽게 이용할 수 없다. 도시 지역(CBD)에서 공공 와이파이를 무료로 이용할 수 있지만 길에서는 대부분 인터넷에 제약이 따른다.
내가 언급한 모든 차이점에도 불구하고, 서로 다른 문화와 분위기를 가진 도시에서 사는 것은 언제나 훌륭한 경험이다.
