How would you like to be a member of one of the biggest and most international clubs in the world, feel at home in the almost 2000 chapters in over 180 countries, learn their culture, speak their language and get to exercise…all for free? Sounds too good to be true, right? Wrong!! And you can get your start right here in the Busan area where there are two chapters. Welcome to the Hash House Harriers! Described as a drinking club with a running problem, the hash is first of all a social club, a grouping of like-minded people of all ages, sexual orientations and anything else, who enjoy getting out in the fresh air and running OR WALKING.

 Here is how it works. Wherever you are in the civilized, an sometimes not so civilized world such as oil fields, remote gold fields, just look up HashHouse Harriers on the web and find the club in your location. Some places like Seoul, Singapore, New York, Shanghai, have multiple Hashes catering to different fitness levels, level of civility and orientations. The Hash website for Korea (http://gotothehash.net/korea/h3insk.html) lists 5 different hash groups in Seoul, some maleonly and associated with the military. Some are mainly for walkers, some are biking, but most are open to anybody. Just show up. You will be welcomed and introduced around. Give your name to the Hash Cash and pay about 10,000KRW in the Busan area to cover the cost of the drink and snacks. The “Grand Master” will call “circle up” (It is the same terminology and format in all the 2000 clubs.) He / She will introduce the “Hares”(rabbits), those who have already set the trail with chalk, shredded paper, saw dust, flour or, in the snow, red or green lentils if available. The Hares give information, and disinformation, on the trail length, difficulty, walkers and runner’s trails. You may sing a song and then its “On-ON!!!” to the trail. Runs will vary but a good one will be around 7-10km. There are “holding check” to rest and let stragglers catch up, there are false trails that the macho runners get lost on, again giving the normal runners a chance to catch up and lots of shenanigans. It is kind of cult thing where each club has its own level of craziness. The Busan area Hashes are well organized, family friendly, and introduces runners to some beautiful countryside, often running trails above the coast line. The hares sweep at the tail end of the runners to make sure no one gets lost and when you get to the end of the run there is always cold drinks (lots of beer) and snack to refresh. More tomfoolery in the circle, off-key singing, false accusations against runners, jokes and always brought to a close by the hash song “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” accompanied by lots of body language. Then it’s just drink, food and conversation…all for 10,000KWN! You can’t beat it for comradery, good clean fun and discovery of new vistas around Busan.

 The Ulsan chapter was founded by Jim Ferman & George Ferrier on 10th April 1988.  180개가 넘는 나라에 2,000여개의 지부가 있는 세상에서 가장 큰 국제 클럽 중 하나인 곳에서 문화와 언어를 배우고 운동까지 할 수 있다면? 게다가 이 모든 게 공짜라면? 믿기 힘들겠지만 실화다! 심지어 부산 인근에는 2개의 지부가 있다. 해쉬 하우스 해리어(Hash House Harriers)에 와서 이 놀라운 경험을 하라! 달리기 클럽으로 알려진 이 국제적인 클럽은 소셜 클럽이다. 남녀노소 각기 다른 사람들이 모였지만 한마음 한 뜻으로 모여서 상쾌한 공기를 마시며 달리거나 걷는다. 

 해쉬 하우스 해리어는 아래와 같은 식으로 운영된다. 대도시에 살든, 소도시에 살든 인터넷으로 본인이 사는 곳 인근에 위치한 해쉬 하우스 해리어를 검색하면 된다. 서울, 싱가포르, 뉴욕, 상하이 같은 큰 도시에는 운동 강도, 성향 등에 따라 다양한 모임들이 있다. 한국 해쉬 하우스 해리어 웹사이트(http://gotothehash.net/korea/h3insk.html)에 따르면 서울에는 5개의 클럽이 있고, 남성만 가입 가능한 곳도 있으며, 군대와 관련된 곳도 있다. 걷기를 중점적으로 하는 클럽도, 자전거 라이딩을 중점적으로 하는 클럽도 있지만, 대부분은 모두에게 열려 있다. 일단 클럽에 찾아가기만 하면 된다. 모두가 당신을 환영하며 멤버들을 소개해 줄 것이다. 해쉬 캐쉬(Hash Cash)에 이름을 제출하고 10,000원 가량을 내면 음료와 스낵이 제공된다. 클럽장이 “서클 업(circle up: 2000개 지부에서 모두 동일한 용어와 방식을 사용한다)”이라고 말하며 “토끼(Hares)”들을 소개해줄 것이다. 이 토끼 그룹은 분필, 조각난 종이, 톱밥, 밀가루, 빨강 또는 초록 렌틸콩 등 다양한 방법으로 달리기 코스 표식을 남길 준비를 한다. 

 토끼 그룹은 코스의 길이, 난이도, 걷기용/달리기용 코스에 대한 올바른 정보와 틀린 정보를 준다. 콧노래와 함께 코스를 달려보자. 달리기 코스의 길이는 다양하지만 대부분7-10km쯤 된다. 중간에 휴식을 취할 수도 있고 낙오자들을 위한 ‘점검 장소(홀딩 체크 holding check)’도 있다. 자신만만하게 앞서 나가던 주자들이 길을 잃어버릴 수도 있는 가짜 코스는 뒤쳐진 사람들이 선두 주자를 따라잡을 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있고, 여러 가지 속임수도 코스 내에 마련되어 즐거움을 더한다. 각 지부마다 그 수준이 다르다. 부산에서 참가 가능한 해쉬 하우스 해리어는 잘 조직되어 있으며 해안을 따라 달리는 코스도 마련되어 있다.

 토끼 그룹은 코스 마지막 즈음에서 낙오자가 없는지 체크한다. 코스 끝에는 언제나 시원한 음료와 맥주가 간식이 준비되어 있으며, 율동과 함께 “흔들리는 포장마차(Swing Low, Sweet Chariot)”라는 유명한 팝송을 부르며 끝이 난다. 이후엔 단돈 10,000원으로 먹고 마시고 이야기하는 일만 남았다! 부산에서 새로운 친구들과 새로운 풍경을 감상하며 즐거운 시간을 보내보자.

 부산에서 참여 가능한 두 개의 한국 지부는 울산과 거제에 있다. 두 지부 모두 보통 격주로 일요일에 모인다. 세부 내용은 아래와 같다.
