부산 자매 도시, 카사블랑카

I just read in a Korean newspaper a new article that stated that the number one thing Koreans want to spend their money on is world travel! This really made me happy and that is one of the main reason I am starting this series that will examine the sister cities of Busan and compare them.  Now, I know that bias does exist and for this reason I want to clarify my credentials for taking on this quest. The first is my degree that focused on international relations. I studied under great professors who taught me how to objectively see the world. Secondly is the fact that I have been to more than 130 countries and have done extensive studies and research on each and every one of them. And finally my graduate degree as an education and English major has taught me how to see and think critically.  I am happy to say that I have been to all but three of Busan's sister cities and that each one holds a special place in my travel memories! So hang on and get ready for a fun ride through the world!

방금 한국인이 돈을 소비하고 싶은 분야 1위가 세계여행이라는 기사를 신문에서 읽은 참이다! 기쁘기 그지 없는 이 소식은 내가 부산의 자매 도시를 조사하고 비교하는 이 시리즈를 기획하게 된 이유 중 하나이기도 하다. 분명히 편견이 존재한다는 걸 알고 있는 나로서는 이 임무를 수행하기 위한 자격을 확실히 증명하고자 한다. 첫째, 나는 국제관계를 전공해 학위를 땄다. 훌륭한 교수님들 밑에서 세계를 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있는 방법에 대해 배웠다. 둘째, 나는 세계 130개 이상의 국가를 방문하며 각각에 대해 방대한 양의 연구를 진행해 오고 있다. 마지막으로, 영어교육학사학위를 통해 비판적인 시각과 사고에 대해 배웠다. 세 곳을 제외하고는 부산의 모든 자매도시에 가본 적이 있다는 사실이 기쁘다. 각각의 도시들은 내게 특별한 여행의 추억을 안겨 주었다. 이제 즐겁게 세상을 누빌 준비를 해 보자! 

Nobel Cause

The concept of 'sister cities is as old as cities themselves. In my travels especially in Africa I have met tribes with close ties to other tribes both far and near.  These bonds have created both safety and economic advantages that have existed for hundreds of years.  The Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans also had cities with special relations with other cities especially when they shared a common enemy. 

The modern idea of sister cities first began in England with a town called Coventry. This city had been attacked during the war by Germany and reached out to Stalingrad who was currently under attack. The women sent the inhabitants a table cloth with all of their names embroidered on it and also money to help buy food and medical supplies. This created a strong bond of both partnership and support; both cities thus became bonded and still have a deep friendship to this day.

훌륭한 시작

자매 도시’라는 개념은 도시 자체만큼이나 오래되었다. 특히 아프리카를 여행할 때 거리가 멀든 가깝든 다른 부족과 친밀하게 지내는 부족들을 만난 적이 있다. 이를 통해 수백 년 동안이나 안전적, 경제적 이득을 얻고 있었다. 이집트, 그리스, 로마인들도 마찬가지로 다른 도시와 특별한 관계를 맺었는데, 특히나 공공의 적이 있을 때는 더욱 그러했다.

자매 도시에 대한 현대의 개념은 영국에 있는 콘벤트리(Conventry)라는 마을에서 처음 시작되었다. 전쟁 중 공격을 받았던 콘벤트리는 그 당시 공격의 대상이 되었던 스탈린그라드에 손을 내밀었다. 여성들은 스탈린그라드 주민들에게 그들의 이름이 수놓인 식탁보를 보냈고, 음식과 의료용품을 살 수 있도록 돈을 보내기도 했다.

The next phase of sister cities began after World War II when the U. S president Dwight Eisenhower came up with a great idea for American cities to become closer to other cities around the world.  The motivation was for global peace and also for economics partnerships. He often stated that it was important for nations to cooperation and the exchange of ideas through deep friendship.  Now that we see the history we can see the importance of such global bonds.

Busan has twenty-six sister cities:

Each one holds a special place to Busan and I believe are diamonds that should be discovered. I am starting off with Casablanca.

이후 자매 도시라는 개념은 제2차 세계대전 이후, 미국 도시들이 전세계 다른 도시와 보다 가까운 관계를 맺을 수 있도록 하는 미국 대통령 드와이트 아이젠하워(Dwight Eisenhower)의 훌륭한 아이디어로부터 시작되었다. 전세계적으로 평화를 도모하고 경제적인 파트너십을 구축하기 위해서였다. 아이젠하워는 여러 국가가 협력하고 아이디어와 우정을 나누는 것이 중요하다고 자주 말했다. 부산은 26개 도시와 자매 결연을 맺었다.:

각각의 도시는 부산에게 특별한 곳이며, 꼭 둘러보아야 할 보석 같은 곳이라고 믿는다. 먼저 카사블랑카에서부터 시작하자.

Before Beginning

I am so tired of YouTube world 'experts' who plop into a city for a few days or weeks, and then act as if they truly know the city. I call these travelers 'flying squirrels'. The art of travel should be relished- like seeing a Shakespeare play!  The flying squirrels are like the people who plop into a play at the Globe Theater in London for ten minutes, watch, and then tell everyone that they saw the play.  The truth is that they saw nothing but motion. The real fan of Shakespeare does research and understands history and plots... theories and art. Then they will relish the whle play and it will become a diamond in their memory!  This applies to world travel as well. I always tell friends to come and live in Busan in order to understand it!  Make friends and meet strangers and get into the heart of understanding Korea. Take language classes in Busan and spend time getting to know all the great places-slowly. Relish each day and this will give a deep thrill and great perspective that will be a diamond to each visitor. 

시작하기에 앞서

나는 유튜브에서 자칭 ‘전문가’라는 사람들이 한 도시에 고작 며칠이나 몇 주를 머물면서 그 도시를 완전히 아는 척 행동하는 걸 보는 데 지쳐버렸다. 나는 이런 여행가들을 ‘날다람쥐’라고 부른다. 여행의 묘미는 셰익스피어 연극을 보는 것과 같아야 한다! 날다람쥐들은 런던 글로브 극장에 10분 정도 있다가 떠나놓고는 다른 사람들에게 연극을 다 봤다고 말하는 것과도 같다. 그들이 본 것은 그저 움직임일 뿐이다. 셰익스피어 희곡의 진정한 팬들은 역사와 줄거리, 이론과 예술을 연구하고 이해하는 사람들이다. 그렇게 되면 팬들은 희곡의 모든 것을 즐기며 추억 속의 보물로 남길 수 있을 것이다. 세계여행도 마찬가지다. 나는 언제나 친구들에게 부산을 이해하려면 부산에 와서 살아봐야 한다고 말한다!  친구를 사귀고 낯선 이들을 만나며 한국을 진정으로 이해해보자. 부산에서 한국어 수업을 들으며 충분한 시간을 들여 훌륭한 장소들을 천천히 알아가 보자. 매일매일을 기꺼이 즐기다 보면 각자 깊은 전율을 느끼며 훌륭한 관점을 얻게 될 것이다.

My Hero

And so I will now start to look at Casablanca through the eyes of my favorite historian: Alexis de Tocqueville. He was my hero throughout university life and he gave me a very strategic way of seeing this world! He was a true scientist of politics and international studies and relations! He was so curious about this world and he left his very wealthy family in France to live in America! H looked at all aspects of people and society-I especially love his educated approach to travel in his masterpiece Democracy in America!  He uses the greatest tool of all sociologists: Comparison. And this is how I will start sketching the highlights of both these glorious world hubs!

이제 내가 가장 사랑하는 역사가의 시선을 통해 카사블랑카를 들여다보고자 한다.바로 알렉시 드 토크빌이다. 토크빌은 학창 시절 내내 나의 영웅이었고, 내게 세상을 바라보는 아주 전략적인 방법을 가르쳐 주었다. 정치, 국제연구 및 외교관계를 탐구한 진정한 학자였다! 세상에 대한 호기심이 가득했던 그는 프랑스의 부유한 가정에서 태어나 미국에서 자랐다. 그는 인간과 사회를 모든 면에서 살펴보았는데, 나는 특히나 그의 역작인 ‘미국의 민주주의’에서 그가 보여준 여행에 대한 교육적 관점을 정말로 사랑한다. 그는 모든 사회학자들에게 최고의 도구를 사용한다. 바로 비교법이다. 나 역시도 비교법을 통해 이 멋진 세계의 허브들이 어떤 특징을 지녔는지 살펴보고자 한다.

Analysis 

Casablanca and Busan have around the same number of people. Busan has 3.4 million and Casablanca has 3.8 million. Both cities are very powerful tourist magnate as well. The whole world navigates to both cities for food and fun. It is here that I would like to start. I want to be as objective as possible and will give a score based on a 10point system. 

분석 

카사블랑카와 부산의 인구 수는 거의 비슷하다. 부산은 340만 명, 카사블랑카는 380만 명이다. 두 도시 모두 관광지로 유명하다는 공통점도 있다. 바로 이 지점부터 시작해보자. 최대한 객관적으로 10점 만점 기준으로 점수를 매길 것이다.

Food

Food is a major draw for tourists. Not only taste but also price, cleanliness, and also environment. Casablanca has a vast menu of delicious foods.  The crown jewel is a dish called Cous Cous made from vegetables and beef or chicken or lamb, and cooked very slowly.  It is an amazing dish and is often served with a hot sauce called harrissa. This dish is usually served on Friday's, and it is always a spectacular event! The price is only about three U. S dollars and the taste is amazing.  Next comes a dish called Tangin which can be found every day from noon onwards. This is a vegetable and meat dish baked in clay cone shaped pots.  The proper way to eat one is with a loaf of round bread using the right hand to scoop up the delicate meat and vegetables with the small pieces of bread. The price is usually two dollars and always comes with a free glass of water and small bowl of harrisa. Next is a sort of 'fusion' snack called Tacos. These are not at all like Mexican tacos, but resemble a burrito with a flour tortilla shell and with grilled meat inside along with vegetables and even cheese. The price is two dollars and the taste is very delicious. Finally, the city has vast quantities of fresh sardines that are grilled on an open fire and taste so fantastic. The price is only one dollar but at nice restaurants can be much more as different sauces and relishes are added. These are the main dishes eaten by Moroccans each day.

음식은 주요한 관광요소다. 맛뿐만 아니라 가격, 청결도, 환경까지 중요하다. 카사블랑카에는 맛있는 음식들이 아주 많다. 카사블랑카의 대표 음식은 쿠스쿠스라는 것으로, 소고기, 닭고기, 양고기와 채소를 넣어 천천히 조리한다. 때로는 하리사라고 불리는 매운 소스와 함께 내오기도 하는 아주 멋진 음식이다. 쿠스쿠스는 대개 금요일에 먹는데, 이는 가히 대단한 행사라고 할 수 있다! 가격은 미국 달러로 겨우 3달러밖에 하지 않는데도 맛은 엄청나다. 다음은 점심 이후로 먹는 타진이다. 타진은 고깔 모양의 토기 냄비에 채소와 고기를 구워 만든 요리다. 타진은 오른손을 이용해 동그란 빵에 부드러운 고기와 채소를 넣어 싼 뒤 빵 몇 조각과 곁들여 먹는 것이 정석이다. 가격은 2달러 정도이며, 무료로 물 한 잔과 하리사가 항상 함께 나온다. 다음은 타코라고 하는 일종의 ‘퓨전’ 음식이다. 멕시코 타코와 완전히 같지는 않지만, 밀가루로 만든 토르티야에 구운 고기, 채소, 치즈까지 넣어 먹는다는 점에서 부리또와 비슷하다. 가격은 2달러이며 아주 맛있다.

In Busan the crown jewel of food is the bulgogi feast with all the side dishes. This is a glorius treat but the price can be expensive. There is no better place in the world that serves this royal meal than Busan!  The second feast is raw fish.  This feast is also rather expensive but is full of such masterful flavors, and once again the best place on earth to eat it is in Busan- preferably near Hauendae beach. As far as day to day lunch goes the people of  Busan have many small restaurants that sell the world famous bepimbob for roughly five dollars a bowl.  This little dish is a diamond because of the taste, nutrition and price.  Next comes Kim bop which is a good snack food and a very cheap lunch for usually two dollars. The people of Busan also enjoy a vast amount of sea food dishes that create pure heaven for seafood lovers. Busan also has a vast variety of world famous fried chicken and they have a large selection of dishes made with pork.

Both cities are havens for food lovers!

부산의 대표 음식은 여러 반찬과 곁들여 먹는 불고기다. 아주 특별한 음식이지만 가격은 비쌀 수 있다. 전 세계 어디에서도 이 멋진 음식을 부산보다 더 제대로 즐길 수 없을 것이다! 두 번째로는 회를 꼽을 수 있다. 회 역시 값이 조금 나가지만 훌륭한 맛을 선보인다. 다시 한 번 말하지만, 이 음식을 지구상에서 가장 제대로 즐길 수 있는 곳은 부산, 그 중에서도 해운대 바닷가다. 점심 시간이면 한 그릇에 약 5달러 정도 하는 세계적으로 유명한 비빔밥을 먹을 수 있는 작은 식당들이 도처에 있다. 비빔밥은 맛, 영양, 가격 면에서 다이아몬드만큼이나 훌륭하다. 다음으로는 김밥이다. 간단하게 먹을 수 있는 음식으로, 2달러만으로도 즐길 수 있는 저렴한 점심식사다.

Entertainment

Casablanca is a fun city but only has  a few movie theaters, and only a handful of shopping malls. The main mall is called The Marina and it is located on the ocean shore. It is very modern and usually full and offers a giant food court with all the great foods of Morocco and also McDonald's, Burger king, and even a Baskin Robbin's. The main entertainment is to shop at the Medina which can be full of fun and wonder! Then after shopping tourists and locals often drink teas or coffees in the ubiquitous cafes that pepper the city. There are nice music clubs that play live music at night and at the four star hotels tourists can drink cocktails and enjoy local dishes!

Busan is a diamond for entertainment! Movie theaters are everywhere along with shopping malls that have food courts overflowing with tasty delights! I love the giant Centum City mall as well as the Lotte malls and CGI theaters with the latest movies and popcorn and great snacks! Nightlife in Busan is probably the best of any country in this world! Night clubs and singing rooms and bars pepper the streets and are open well into the early morning hours! I have been to Las Vegas many times, and I must say that Busan kills the often exaggerated attractions of Vegas! There are also small things that keep people entertained such as baseball batting cages and even ice-skating rinks and game rooms with screen golf and other fantastic games! A tourist will never be bored in Busan!

카사블랑카에는 극장도 몇 개밖에 없고, 쇼핑몰도 한 손에 꼽을 정도다. 메인 몰은 마리나라는 곳으로, 해안가에 위치해 있다. 대체로 사람들로 가득 차 있고, 훌륭한 모로코 음식을 맛볼 수 있는 큰 규모의 푸드코트와 맥도날드, 버거킹, 배스킨라빈스까지 있다. 주요 엔터테인먼트는 메디나에서 쇼핑을 하거나 도시 어디에나 있는 차나 커피를 마시는 것이다. 나조차도 때로 지루함을 느낀다는 사실을 인정하겠다. 반면 부산은 즐길거리로 가득 찬 곳이다! 맛있는 음식이 가득한 푸드코트가 잔뜩 있는 쇼핑몰과 더불어 영화관도 어디에서나 찾아볼 수 있다. 나는 어마어마한 센텀시티몰과 롯데몰, 팝콘과 맛있는 간식을 사들고 최신 영화를 즐길 수 있는 CGI 극장을 사랑한다. 부산의 밤은 전세계 그 어느 곳보다도 멋진 순간이다. 나이트클럽, 노래방, 바가 거리에 즐비한데다 이른 아침까지 영업을 한다니! 라스베가스를 여러 번 방문한 적이 있는 나로서는 종종 부산이 베가스의 과장된 매력보다 훨씬 더 대단한 곳이라고 말할 수밖에 없다! 야구 배팅장은 물론이고 아이스링크, 스크린골프나 다른 재밌는 게임을 즐길 수 있는 게임방까지, 부산은 소소한 즐길거리로 가득하다! 관광객이라면 부산에서 결코 지루할 일이 없을 것이다!

Transportation

Casablanca has a very good bus system that is both efficient and cheap.  A ticket costs fifty U. S cents and the whole city is covered.  The taxis in Casablanca are also very cheap and the small red cabs can whisk tourists around for only a few dollars.  The cabs do have meters but often times the driver will not use them. So always make sure to insist before getting inside any taxi! 

Busan has a great metro system that is both safe and fast. The price is only about one U. S dollar and the convenience is so wonderful! Busan also has a vast and very efficient bus system for the same price, and bus stops are everywhere.  Taxis in Busan are both safe and honest. I have never had a driver take off without turning on the meter! Most are very friendly and can speak some English.

교통

카사블랑카는 효율적이고 저렴한 좋은 버스 시스템을 갖추고 있다. 티켓은 미국 달러로 50센트이며, 도시 내 모든 곳에 노선이 있다. 카사블랑카의 택시 요금도 무척 저렴해서, 관광객들은 단돈 몇 달러에 이 작고 빨간 택시를 타고 돌아다닐 수 있다. 택시에는 미터기가 있지만 미터기를 사용하지 않는 택시운전사도 있다. 그러니 택시를 타기 전에 반드시 미터기를 켜달라고 요구할 것!

부산은 안전하고 빠른 훌륭한 지하철 시스템을 갖추고 있다. 가격은 미국 달러로 1달러 정도밖에 하지 않는데다 아주 편리하다. 같은 가격으로 넓은 노선과 효율성을 자랑하는 버스 시스템도 있다. 버스정류장도 곳곳에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 부산의 택시는 안전하고 정직하다. 미터기를 켜지 않는 운전자를 단 한 번도 본 적이 없다! 대부분 무척 친절하시고 어느 정도 영어를 할 수 있다.

Tourist Attractions

Casablanca is blessed with three very intriguing and beautiful gifts.  The first is the Medina which I mentioned before! The Medina is a system of shops and food courts and even hotel rooms all within a walled city!  A tourist can spend days wandering the streets of the old Medina both day and night! Next to the Medina a small walk down the coast is the giant King Hussein Mosque that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build! It is a spectacular tourist attraction! People come from all over the world to see it! The third tourist attraction is the beach itself. The long boardwalk leads tourists along the beautiful coast with crashing waves and nice parks and rest areas where vendors sell popcorn and cotton candy for ten cents! The city also has various tourist show areas where old Moroccan music and dance shows can be seen. The city also has world class football events that create an enormous amount of joy and excitement! 

Busan's main attractions include magnificent Buddhist temples and glorious 

beach side attractions! The famous Jagalchi Busan fish market is such a once in a lifetime experience that is full of fun and excitement! Another diamond is the spectacular Busan Aquriam! But Busan also has beautiful hills and mountains! I especially like hiking in these mountains and exploring the small hidden restaurants that hold fascinating feasts as I make my way to a famous Temple! Busan also has Nampodong and Somyeon, two major shopping and entertainment venues that keep tourists always enthralled!  Busan has one special advantage which are the baseball games that create such a festive mood and draw in thousands and thousands each year to cheer on the professional players and teams!

관광지

카사블랑카는 아주 흥미롭고 아름다운 세 가지 선물을 간직한 도시다. 첫 번째 선물인 메디나는 벽으로 둘러싸인 도시 안에 상점, 푸드코트, 심지어 호텔 객실까지 포함된 시스템을 말한다. 관광객은 밤낮으로 구 메디나 거리를 걸을 수 있다. 메디나 옆 해안가 쪽으로 조금만 걸어가면 수억 달러의 건설비용으로 지어진 거대한 킹 하산 모스크를 마주하게 된다. 어마어마한 장관을 자랑하는 모스크를 보기 위해 전 세계에서 관광객이 몰려온다. 세 번째 관광 명소는 해변 그 자체다. 긴 산책로를 따라가면 아름다운 해안에 하얗게 부서지는 파도와 멋진 공원을 만나게 되고, 10센트에 팝콘과 솜사탕을 파는 상인들이 있는 쉼터도 있다. 오래된 모로코 음악과 댄스 쇼를 볼 수 있는 여러 공연 구역도 있다. 게다가 엄청난 즐거움과 흥분을 선사하는 세계적 수준의 축구 경기도 관람할 수 있다.

부산의 주요 볼거리로는 장엄한 사찰과 아름다운 해변 명소들이 있다. 유명한 부산 수산시장은 멋진 부산 아쿠아리움과 더불어 일생에 한 번뿐인 특별한 경험을 선사한다. 나는 특히나 작은 산에서 하이킹을 하거나 유명한 절을 찾아가는 길에 숨겨진 식당들을 탐방하곤 한다. 남포동과 서면은 관광객을 매료시키는 주요 쇼핑거리이자 엔터테인먼트의 장이다. 게다가 부산에서도 매년 축제 분위기 속에서 수천 명의 사람들과 함께 프로 야구선수와 팀을 응원한다.
