The Iranian Community in Busan (ICB) held a rally called “Women, Life, Freedom,” in front of the KNN (Korea News Network) building on October 22, 2002. The demonstration was organized in support of world-wide protests demanding an end to compulsory hijab (Islamic head coverings) for women in public, as well as a change in the corrupt government that have left many Iranians without agency in their home country. With protests across the globe numbering in the thousands, Iranians are hoping to bring about a peaceful change to what is seen as a corrupt government that does not take care of the basic needs of its people.

(ICB, the Iranian Community in Busan)은 KNN 건물 앞에서 “여성, 삶, 자유”라는 집회를 열었다.

The protests started after news was released about the September 16 death of a Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, from Saqez, Iran, who was visiting Tehran when she was arrested by the Morality Police for as they assume “not wearing a hijab properly”. While the police say she died because of a heart attack, her family stated that she was in good health at the time of her arrest. Only highly edited videos of her time in the police station have been released leading many who have experienced the tactics of the Morality Police to link her death with the frequent beatings that occur in the police station.

Since Amini’s death, protesters have taken to the streets in Iran and other countries around the world. With protests happening in Seoul, Toronto, Sydney, and other cities, the Iranian Community in Busan stood in solidarity for change. This is the third protest held by the Iranian community, with the first occurring in Seomyeon on September 25th, with over three dozen in attendance.

Iranian Community in Busan (ICB) arranged their booth at Busan Global Gathering 2022, which was hosted  offline again by BFIC after almost 3 years.

This time it was held in front of Busan Station, and just like other years, there were so many countries from all over the world participating in Busan Global Gathering.

ICB tried to show some traditional Iranian dress which people had the chance to try, and take photos in. Also Iranian handicrafts and pastries were available. But the important part of ICB booth was dedicated to the recent news in Iran about Mahsa Amini’s death and the protests happening in Iran and all over the world.

A protest march occurred through the Busan Global Gathering on October 2nd with participants shouting “zan, zendegi, aazaad!” (women, life, freedom) in Persian (Farsi). A booth was also set up telling Koreans about what happened to Amini and what is happening in Iran. A message board created for the event received hundreds of messages of support and solidarity. Participants were not limited to Iranians, with several Koreans and other nationalities participating. A march also happened there initiated by Iranians.

While the global protests started as a direct result of Amini’s death and the treatment of women by the Islamist government, the protest have expanded to the general state of human rights in the country. The government, for its part, has responded with violence and bloodshed. As of October 17th, more than 215 people, including 27 children, have been killed. Among them was 16-year-old Asra Panahi, who died as a result of the security forces raiding the Shahed girl’s high school on October 13th, after girls at the school refused to sing a propaganda song in support of the government.

The government has responded to protests by attempting to prevent protestors from coordinating. Internet blackouts and disruption of popular messaging apps like Telegram and Whatsapp have caused protestors to find alternatives. Protestors who bring cellphones to protests are often tracked through GPS. Media coverage has been difficult due to restrictions  on speech, new blackouts, and arrest of journalists.
