(Un Autre Regard)
by Sébastien Simon

From March 10th to March 27th 2022, something that had become rare since the onset of the pandemic finally happened again (just before the Korean government announced the recent changes to travel conditions): a foreign artist willingly came from overseas to Korea with her exhibition! Titled Un Autre Regard (in English: "Another Perspective"), this photographic exhibition took place at the Art Space Alliance Française (annex to the GoEun Museum of Photography, in Marine City). The author, a French painter and photographer named Lorraine Thiria, was present in Busan for the duration of the event, often welcoming visitors in person, and gladly providing detailed explanations.

Born in Paris, Lorraine Thiria worked for twenty years as a lawyer specializing in the defense of women and children, before devoting herself entirely to painting, photography and writing. There is an obvious reciprocity to her work. While she used to merely take photos as research for her paintings, her pictorial sensibility naturally came to feed into her distinct photographic approach, which has now asserted itself and become an autonomous and free creation. "I like when there is no way to know if it is painting or photography". Indeed, Lorraine Thiria’s pictorial filter always accompanies (and even precedes) her photographic practice, which constantly deconstructs reality to unearth its abstraction.

In a process which she herself describes as "obsessive", Lorraine Thiria is constantly on the lookout for rusty and dirty walls, or abandoned habitats. To her, their lived-in quality make these materials, which retain observable traces of the past, feel vibrant and alive. "With my photographs, I like to reveal what has gone, or what might soon disappear. In these broken places, I feel like I exist, like a living witness. I’m both very connected to what I see and capture, and am also connected to the invisible people who used to inhabit these places. I could spend hours observing each detail, each part of these walls. I am in a timeless bubble, in a place that’s out of time and maybe even out of space."

As part of her process, Lorraine Thiria must venture out and explore. "When I am outdoors, my eye is stimulated by a multitude of materials which I randomly capture here and there — on the concrete ground of the Saint-Nazaire shipyards in the winter light, or in the water of Guérande’s salt flats, or wherever I travel… I zoom in or I physically come as close as possible to the materials so that I may grasp all their lines, nuances, textures and hues. When I am that close to the materials, they become less tangible and less concrete, and my eye can’t distinguish what they’re made of anymore." In fact, that sense of ambiguity and confusion, which is intrinsic to her images, is wholly enjoyable for her to provoke in others — because it also triggers their imagination: "Eventually, my audience can look at my images freely, since they can choose to see whatever they want in them."

As much about what she prints her images onto (thick, textured paper; or aluminum sheets that catch and reflect the light), Lorraine Thiria is also very careful about the order in which she displays them. "One by one, I find each photograph interesting. But I want to arrange them in a combination that makes sense. So I try to tell a colorful and structured story which evolves as one walks through the exhibition. To that end, I pair photographs in diptychs or triptychs. Sometimes, they have nothing in common, neither location, time, chronology, nor material, but their lines and hues are in such good balance that, together, these photographs seem to turn into a painting. It’s the whole that I must consider, the general harmony."
