International College)

Following the visit of Lorraine Thiria’s exhibition Un Autre Regard in March 2022, the multinational students of the 2022 class of Understanding & Expression of Photography in Dongseo University, International College, were tasked with presenting their own perspectives or impressions of Busan through photographs and short captions. The  result comes to you in the form of this collective article — as diverse as its authors themselves, who hail from Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Morocco, Lithuania, Belorussia, Finland, and Korea.

Title: Busan outside of Busan
by Shin Min Chang

Living outside of Busan, the scenery I saw is a bridge connecting other cities passingover the Nakdong River. I want to play the role of connecting and meeting people,
like this bridge.

Title: Purity, Happiness, Joy
by Abbos Ilyosjonov

Children are angels on the Earth. They never hesitate to do what they want to do. They don't hurt you. They don't make fake smile. They are not racists. They are always busy with themselves. They share love and happiness. I like looking at what children do, because I can see things that I didn't experience in my childhood. I can remember the precious moments that I had. Observing them is stress relief for me.

Title: The Dark Side of the Moon
by Siddikov Nurbek

Like the moon, big cities also have two sides. As we all have gotten used to seeing only the good, rich sides of the Busan city, we rarely pay
attention to the poor sides of it. Whenever I go to Gimhae, I see a man who lives
outside, under the bridge. I see him there even in freezing winter and hot summer. We can
see how people can live poor lives, even in developed countries like South Korea.
Obviously, this is only one small part of that "dark side".

Title: Atmosphere in Busan
by Abdulaziz Odiljanov

Since I started living in Busan, I have always felt that the weather here is different from Central Asia’s, where I came from. Personally, I don’t like the hot weather much (in Uzbekistan, summer is hot, above 90°F). On the other hand, Busan is really warm and rainy during the summer and I like that.

Jagalchi Market, the biggest fish market in South Korea.

Title: Out of Comfort Zone
by Dang Thai Thanh Hieu

For me, Busan is a place where I step out of my comfort zone, do things I've never
done, or thought I wouldn't be able to do. I don't know how to describe it in pictures. Here, I feel comfortable trying things I never dared to do. It was the first time I sat at Gwangan Beach all night, waiting for dawn, and chilling and chatting with a little
sister. We talked about our own stories and about life in Busan. At that time, I
realized how Busan gave me so many opportunities, I made new friends and the city changed me. Now, Busan gives me a familiar feeling, like my second home.

Title: Cats are all around
by Vu Khanh Linh
Busan is a very special city where there are many wild cats everywhere — from schools, parks, restaurants, or even hospitals. But the amazing thing about this is that they will never starve, and there will always be nice people around to feed
them. This is my favorite thing in Busan.

Title: Busan sunset
by Nguyen Quoc Hiep

At the beginning of spring, the sunset in Busan appears a lot and has its own beauty. When I'm in my country, I rarely see sunsets or I'm too busy to notice, but since I've been here, I've often noticed a change in the sky, perhaps due to feeling a bit
homesick. So the sunset in Busan is very special to me.

Title: Night life and what’s left behind
by Nguyen Hoai Nam

Busan never seems to sleep. I love the city by night: the streets are still packed with people, the pubs are full of customers, and the music is getting more and more
exciting. Sadly, what's left behind is trash. I wish everyone would have more effective cleaning measures to make the city even more beautiful.

Title: Night and day in Busan

The energy of the city: high buildings, busy night life and bright colors. The calmness of the ocean: waves, colorful seashells and the beach. Two of my favorite things and the opposites of each other.

Title: My Other Perspective
by Bui Thao Nguyen

I wanted to pick a place that can convey an “obsession” to a certain topic and this exhibition in Asean Culture House did a great job of that. From photos of the tea
Farms, to using tea leaves to make artworks, and even teaching about tea/coffee
culture across Asian countries, I became more knowledgeable and “gained” a new
perspective after seeing someone’s other perspective.

Title: Mindless Existence
by Lizaveta Horbuzava

After two weeks of quarantine, my classmate and I decided to walk a bit around the
place where we live. However, without doing proper research, we ended up in
Sasang district. Most people – especially tourists – tend to not visit industrial districts. They are not appealing as they are dusty, do not
smell good, do not look pretty, and do not have any entertainment for the regular public. They are the ugliest parts of the city that are not often shown, so we are mindlessly existing alongside industrial parts of the city that play a very important role.

Title: The sacrifice of today’s kind
by Paulius Kazlauskas

I grew up in a small village and was always surrounded by stars, sounds of animals
and loads of greenery. I have sadness within me when these things are not around me. But this image of a street lamp with an accidental green glowing effect did
connect to me. As if Nature was bleeding through this human creation.

Title: In the corner of the city
by Michael Paskalino Suprapto

When I visited a really quiet cafe in the Shin-Do district that has a 70’s theme,
I was surprised and took this picture as a metaphor of “great things are just around
the corner”. That place left me speechless because everywhere you look, it was just photographic material, they are begging to be photographed.

Title: Spots
by Choi Jun Seo

I think Busan is a special city in Korea. Busan is always powerful, but relaxing. The reason I love Busan is that I can find many places to visit, such as cafes. Finding a
new cafe and meeting new people makes me happy. Busan's power gives me energy.

Title: Night Life
by Amina Ajijin

Something about Busan's night life has always piqued my interest. I've always found wandering through deserted or bustling streets in the early hours of the morning to be enthralling. I used to love staying up late as a kid, and I used to get in trouble for it
because of various medical and spiritual views, but I loved it and still do.

Title: Another Cigarette
by Greta Kaziunaite

Some of the biggest issues in Busan (and South Korea in general) include long
working hours, depression, and high smoking prevalence. All those things are
connected. Some people start smoking because they think it will help them deal with stress or depression, caused by working too much. At first, I tried to take photos of hard working people in Busan, but I could not
help but notice people smoking in almost every corner, especially in Seomyeon. Most of them were just taking smoke breaks from work. However, I am proud of the result, because I think those photos speak louder than any written description.

Title: A Bizarre Connection
by Marta Matiliauskaite

Getting the chance to every so often, stop and observe the simple lives led by the
locals here in Busan, has completely shattered my perception of the term “metropolis” and somehow made me feel a lot more at home than I expected it to. Something as simple as wandering the aisles of a food market with a camera in hand not only gives character to every stranger momentarily frozen in frame, but also eases my mind a
bit, and gets me thinking that perhaps this seemingly foreign land is not so foreign
after all.

Title: A Closer Look
by Nojus Petrūnas

I sat by a small river close to Dongnae station and took photos for over an hour. With the ability granted to me by the camera, I could freeze time and look at the river from a different perspective.
Something that is usually clearly understandable takes a different form. It no longer looks like water — more like wood or stone? Much like how I see the city itself, so vibrant and active,
something so ordinary can change like that only when you take a closer look.

Title: Kalon (beauty that is more than skin deep)
by Gladys Hertatri Tjandra Mulia

I feel melancholic when I take a walk near my church in Seomyeon at night. The
usually busy and crowded place suddenly feels vacant and void of life. It reminds me that, beneath the happiness of living freely in Busan, I can also feel isolated here.
Because even when people smile at me, I’m still a stranger in a foreign country. And sometimes I just miss the familiarity and my home, like I will miss this city when the
time comes for me to leave it. No matter what, I will have spent a part of my youth here.

Title: Thalassophile
by Nethania Chenliasari Lovpinna

Usually, around early April, people will go and find cherry blossoms to photograph.
But for me, how to feel the spring isn't just to find these flowers and compet with
others to take a good picture and to upload it first, but also to heal the mind by taking a deep breath from the reality.

Title: To strive for?
by Calvin Andrew Goenadi

Society is built by countless men and women in order for younger generations to get a better life. But we are so fixated on this goal of the future that we often neglect the people who help create this reality to begin with, such as low- level workers,
people that are often invisible to our very eyes but who take a great role in shaping
society as we know it. It is certainly not isolated to Busan or Korea for that matter, but seeing many documentaries about life in Korea makes me realize that not all is as
beautiful as it seems.

(To strive for?)
by Calvin Andrew Goenadi

Title: Ent’s Mystery

Title: Fleeting Hidden Beauty
by Lea Vanessa

This picture was taken in early April at the Dajeon EcoPark in the middle of spring. If you were to gaze at the entirety of the canola flower field, you could easily overlook
the fact that the entirety of the scene is composed of these little flowers, that are
roped together into a harmonious composition. Even a singular flower here has its
own beauty and intricate details, even though they’re hidden underneath the sea of
yellow flowers.

Title: City of The Sea
by Kim Namsu

Sometimes strong and sometimes soft, the sea in Busan is especially beautiful when it meets the sunset, creating a unique texture by disturbing the colors of the buildings, the sunset and the sky reflected in the sea. The city’s slogan is "Dynamic Busan":
like this slogan, the texture of the sea expresses its dynamism.

Title: Calm down with Busan
by Ellen-Maarit Juuso

The title reflects the peaceful beauty of Busan and the people who live there. We all have jobs and accomplishments to focus on, so we can forget to enjoy some simple quality time with our family, like this couple at the beach with their child. This moment felt so magical and fragile so I took a picture without even realizing how cute it became.

Title: Katukissa (a street cat)
by Milla Eveliina Karppinen

As a cat rescue activist, I was intrigued to see and learn about the street cat situation in Korea. Street animals are also often ignored by people passing by, because
they’ve gotten used to that kind of scene. There is not nearly enough resources to
solve this problem in a heartbeat, but one of the things we can do is spread
awareness. It is our responsibility to speak for those who can’t. Sharing their stories
in a form of pictures and texts is the beauty of it all. Cats deserve better than this.
