40th Anniversary of the Alliance Française Busan

Qui aurait imaginé ? (in English: Who would have thought? in Korean: 그 누가 상상할 수 있었을까?) is the title of a text co-written by Kang Youngjoo and Alliance Française director Martin Beyer, and translated in Korean by You Jongsuk, for the exhibition Portraits de Professeurs de Français (Portraits of French Teachers). Presented from September 26th until October 13th 2020 in the Art Space, an annex building of the GoEun Museum of Photography near the Busan Yachting Center in Haeundae, the exhibition was made in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Alliance Française Busan, which was officially founded August 26th 1980 before holding its very first class on September 15th of that year.

As its title implies, the exhibition puts a spotlight on teachers. There are seven, introduced through blackand- white portraits: Kim Jean-Guy, Kang Youngjoo, You Heeyeun, Chang Nina, Kim Mijin, Park Janghee and You Jongsuk. In an interview-based video played on loop in a separate room, each of them recounts how they first came to be interested in the French language and culture, how they themselves learned it, and how they eventually chose to teach it for a living. As a whole, their testimonies provide an interesting and timely window to the past: memories of the darker days of Korea in the 1980s, difficulties to find work as language teachers even then, and several apt reminders that, in those days, travelling abroad in order to pursue academic learning had to be allowed by authorities, and the right earned by succeeding at strict contests and exams. Even the specter of the last years of the Cold War pops up in an amusing anecdote about the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and how the Soviets athletes compared to the Western ones. Only accelerated by Covid-19, the advent of online teaching and the appeal of cheaper digital tools or apps are mentioned as the most likely threats to language institutes, despite their historical usefulness and community-building qualities.

Qui aurait imaginé ? (영어: Who would have thought?

But by far the most surprising aspect of the exhibition is that aforementioned text: Who would have thought? Displayed on the wall of the exhibition between photographs and a map of the world showing the locations of all the many Alliances Françaises, this text appears as if it were written in 2030, and presents as a retroactive summary of the events that are happening right now, in 2020. Dubbed a ’’post-coronavirus utopian fiction’', Who would have thought? begins with the original outbreak of the virus and how it has profoundly impacted the usual work of the staff of the Alliance, who have heartbreakingly seen the numbers of their students melt, struggled with ensuing budget issues, experimented with online classes — much like countless other language institutes.

But that part only covers the first half of the text: the second half progresses beyond 2020 — it actually goes way into the next decade — and imagines how the coming years may possibly happen. Full of an almost shocking optimism for the future development of the Alliance Française Busan and of languagelearning in general, that text proves to be the true centerpiece of the exhibition itself. Probably written by its authors in a fit of muchneeded wishful thinking, it nonetheless delivers a refreshing and poignant, albeit anticipatory, message of hope and endurance in the face of the ongoing pandemic. Here is an excerpt:

"Therefore, no miracle happened for our 40th Anniversary in September 2020, as the country was hit by its third wave of Covid-19… The summer was ending and fear was on everybody’s faces as classes were about to restart. For the people, for general audiences, their priorities and their needs lied elsewhere — and learning French wasn’t one of them. As such, the Alliance Française wasn’t profitable anymore, although it was still functioning just enough to not go bankrupt yet. So here we were, on the 5th floor rooftop of our building, a small delegation with our glasses of wine in hand, facing an uncertain horizon. We were cheering and marking the occasion despite it all. Who would have thought? But anniversaries must be celebrated, mustn’t they?"
