Glittering lights. An ever changing display of art. Fluid motion in dynamic colors. This is how people describe their experience at Museum Dah, in the heart of Busan’s Centum City area. Located just behind the Busan Cinema Center, Museum Dah has been in operation in Busan since last year. The museum features an immersive experience that will leave patrons at a loss for words.

Museum Dah gets its name from an abbreviation of what the museum is. D A and H are the first letters of Digital Art House. This is due to the nature of the exhibits that the museum shows, with a floor to ceiling experience that is mostly digital. It was started as a collaboration between two artists, Jang Seunghyo and Kim Yong-min. They work together as an art group called ‘Collage Plus.’ Their idea was to create an exhibition that represents their slogan, that ‘All objects and all life can be art.’ This is clear when entering the exhibition where normal every day objects are decorated with elaborate colors and paintings. The exhibition hall itself resembles the rooms of a house leading to the last part of the museum’s name.

Busan is the first location for Museum Dah. Other future locations include Jeju, Seoul, and internationally in China, Japan and Thailand. The museum decided to start in Busan because it is the hometown of one of the lead artists, Jang Seunghyo. Because many people believe that Busan is an area with weak culture, the founders of the museum created the space specifically in Busan to help change that perception. With new exhibitions every year, and artwork that changes based on the month being planned, there is always something new to see. Museum Dah also plans to incorporate the works of contemporary artists that are representative of Korea in the exhibition hall.

The current exhibition is titled “Super Nature.” Designed by twenty-one world class contemporary artists, “Super Nature” focuses on the theme of biodiversity. Working as a collaboration with the Busan Environmental Corporation, the World Wildlife Fund, and Mother Nature, the focus of the exhibition is to highlight the importance of biodiversity and the need to conserve in order to create a future where all creatures can coexist. The exhibition began on September 12, 2020 with plans to continue to August 31 next year. Artists were chosen from all over the world, including from Italy and Egypt, to help bring this message to the public.

Museum Dah is the largest museum space dedicated to LED art in Asia. Similar exhibitions can be found in Japan and Hong Kong. Perhaps the most famous of these are Team Lab in Japan. While both focus on visual and technical aspects that change from moment to moment, what sets Museum Dah apart is the LED diodes that are installed from floor to ceiling in the 826 square meter exhibition hall. Other museums of this type rely on beam projectors for the video, which limits what can be done with internal lighting and the inadvertent shadows that are cast by visitors. Because Museum Dah uses high-definition LEDs, there is no problem like this. The entire exhibition is immersive and there are no problems with taking photos, shadowing or backlight.

Museum Dah also differentiates itself from other digital art spaces by combining different works in various genres of art based on different digital media. On the current team of ‘Collage Plus,’ are media artists, video directors, hip-hop artists and many people who have been recognized for their excellence in the fields of painting, performance, fashion, design, architecture and furniture making.

To help control the spread of Covid-19, the museum is following all of the government’s policies. Entrance is only possible with a mask and body temperature is measured. The number of people allowed inside the museum is also limited, so on busy days guests may have to wait a while.

Kim Hyo-jung, curator of Museum Dah said that “we have created a whole new space with the belief that art is for the public to experience and enjoy, and that anything can be art. We hope that visitors will experience the fact that there is nothing in our lives that is not art. We will continue to take the lead in pioneering future life with confidence that art can make human life richer and more valuable.”

Museum Dah is open weekdays from 10am to 7pm, and on weekends and holidays from 10am to 8pm. Tickets are 18,000 for adults, 15,000 for high school and elementary school students, and 13,000 for children under 48months. Visit their website for discount and group pricing information.
