Off the beaten path lies one of the most beautiful areas in Busan. This area isn’t a new tourist attraction, but these days it is getting attention again. Previously this has been a train route and then was converted into a scenic sea side walking path. Many people have flocked to this area to take a walk along the old rail tracks and to capture the perfect photo for their SNS. Unfortunately, this path was difficult for some who struggle to walk long distances or have small children. That has all changed now, thanks to the new Blue Line Rail. The rail is running from Mipo in Haeundae all the way to Songjeong beach. This is a new passenger train that allows people to be able to experience the beautiful coastal views, while riding safely in classically styled trains that run along the shore. In addition to the regular passenger trains that are operating there are also special trains called, “Haeundae Sky Capsules”. These are individual cars that people are also able to ride in for a separate price.

As the train travels along the coast, passengers can get on and off at a variety of interesting destinations. The train has a total of 6 stops including Mipo, Dalmaji Tunnel, Cheongsapo, Daritdol Skywalk, Gudeokpo, and Songjeong. The various stops have different activities and things for people to see and check out. Dalmaji Tunnel provides great photo opportunities and is planning to in the future even have food and beverage trucks. Cheongsapo is a charming fishing village with many things to offer. The Daritdol Skywalk gives visitors great ocean views and an exciting opportunity to walk on a glass platform above the sea. And when reaching the final destination of Songjeong beach, visitors can check out the hottest surfing area in Busan. Another benefit the train provides is it is speedy and efficient. Walking along this route is very pleasant and beautiful, but if visitors are short on time the train is a great option. The entire round-trip journey will take less than an hour, even though the train is traveling at a safe speed of approximately 15kmph. Additionally, passengers will be able to ride year long with extended hours during the busier months of the year. It runs year-round from 9am, but depending on the month it will be open from between 6pm until up to 10pm.

The great thing about having the creation of this passenger train it will improve accessibility. Some people criticize the creation of this train saying that it is pointless and is destroying nature. Those are valid points, since before the train existed there was still access to this area via a walking route along the sea. Myself, being able bodied and capable of walking the path without assistance, I can also agree with these points. However, those who previously could not complete the distance on foot will now also have the opportunity to enjoy these breathtaking views from the comfort of the train. This train was also created to seamlessly merge into nature with an eco-friendly design. The design was made by the architectural company Studio Migliore+Servetto. Their intention was to incorporate the current landscape and history of the area and to embrace the relationship of humans in nature. This new developed project works to provide a cultural experience and different areas for visitors to participate in activities without compromising the environment.

Since I have already taken this route by hiking, I didn’t have too many expectations before I rode the train. I have always loved the area between Mipo and Songjeong because of the beautiful pine trees lining the rocky coast. This area seems to have a natural charm that you can’t find in other parts of the city. Although too be honest, I personally love to hike and walk so I didn’t necessarily see the need for the train. Though upon arrival to the Blue Line Train, I was impressed by the landscaping and design at the entrance path. There are many informational boards, benches for relaxing and beautiful pieces of artwork decorating the station. Fortunately for me I was recording a video for BEFM radio station, so I was able to receive complimentary admission on the train for a round trip journey to Cheongsapo. The trains themselves are charming and designed to appear almost as though they are antiques. Once inside, there are two different rows that you can sit in. Both rows are facing the sea view, so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful blue seas and calming forest views along the way. In addition, the train provides informative audio announcements that let people know about interesting facts and history about the area. For example, I learned that there used to be a beach open to the public in this area but was closed due to an incident with North Korea.

Along the route you are also free to hop on and off at different stops along the way. This is great if you want to combine some walking along with the train ride. Additionally, if you see some photo zones along the way, feel free to get off at any stop you want and you can always get back when you please. This makes the train journey perfect for those who would like to do some sightseeing along the way. Once the train stopped at Cheongsapo, I got off the train to explore the charming seaside village. It is famous for its seaweed, clams and eel. Generally speaking, this town feels like you are stepping back in time because of the traditional style homes and quaint little garden plots. Under closer examination, you will see that this area is also a trendy place. It is home to many rooftop cafes and new style restaurants. So, as you stroll through Cheongsapo, you will feel a combination of modernity upon a traditional Korean village backdrop. Unfortunately, on the day I rode the train, it was not operating to Songjeong. Since it is a new train they are still working out the details of it and had some things to sort out. My roundtrip journey went from Mipo to Cheongsapo and back again. Luckily, I went on a weekday so it wasn’t too crowded and I didn’t have to wait in long lines or wait for the train to long.

Overall, I think this train will provide visitors with added convenience in visiting this area. I personally enjoy walking or hiking along the path, but for those that are in a hurry or not able to do so, I recommend take the train. It is an affordable and comfortable way to be able to experience the Eastern coast line of Busan. For those who are interested in riding the train, you can check out the website for more information. The website can be found at www.bluelinepark.com. The website is available in Korean, Chinese, Japanese and English. It also allows for people to make reservations, which can be helpful during the busier months. If you haven’t done so yet, take a ride on this lovely train. You will be able to get a new perspective on the East coasts of Busan, while also learning about the history of this area. Enjoy your ride on the Blue Line!
