How to recycle in South Korea?

Moving to a new country comes with many challenges. Among them is what to do with your trash. If you come to Korea planning to live, then you need to know how the recycling system works. It might be annoying at first because it’s a lot of work, but as you get to know the rules, it does become easier. Remember, this not only reduces the amount of money you pay to have trashed hauled away, but also helps to improve our environment and save the earth.
The first thing we need to know are the different types of waste. But, before we get into the specific details, the first thing to think about is how we can create less waste in order to help nature. We do still produce a lot of waste every day, so let’s learn how to recognize the different types of waste.

General Waste (일반 쓰레기)

General waste is everything that doesn’t fall into the categories of recyclable or food waste. It might help to think of general waste as things that have come into contact with your body, like used tissue, toilet paper, or sanitary pads. It also includes things like old clothing and shoes. The basic rule is that if it can’t be recycled or eaten by pigs, it belongs in the general waste.

Recyclable Waste (재활용 쓰레기)

Recyclable waste is usually pretty easy to identify. Most packaging these days comes with a recycling symbol that indicates what type of material it is made from. There are generally 6 categories of recyclable waste and they are: Paper Pack (i.e. juice, milk, etc) / Glass (i.e. Beer bottles) / Cans (i.e. aluminium or Iron) / Paper (i.e. printing paper, magazines, newspaper, boxes, cartons, etc.) / Plastic (NOT including Toys, stationery pens, small candy wraps) / PET Bottles / Vinyl (i.e. snack bags, dessert wraps, etc) / Polystyrene foam (i.e. Styrofoam, cup ramen, etc.) Please remember that all items put into recycling should be clean and free of food remains, oils or contamination for the item to be recycled

Food Waste (음식물 쓰레기)

Food waste is anything that is edible. Food waste in Korea is usually processed and turned into animal feed, so the general idea is if a pig will eat it, then it should go into the food waste. There are some exceptions and items like egg shells, crustacean shells, onion and garlic skin, tea bags or leaves and bones should be put into general waste. Other items like fruit and vegetable peels, meat and other items are fine to include in the food waste.

Where to put your waste

Once you’ve figured out the different kinds of waste you have, you might wonder what you need to do with it. Once you sort it, what happens depends on the building you live in. Some places are easier than others. Small buildings or villas might have one or two containers to sort waste into while larger officetels and apartments might have a separate bin for each type of recyclable. But no matter where you live, you need to separate your trash and place them in the correct bin.The location for you trash is different in every building but it usually is either on the first floor or in the basement. For specific instructions on where to take your trash speak to your building manager or landlord.

Bins that say 종이류 are for paper products. These include milk cartons and cardboard boxes. Make sure to flatten any boxes you have before you throw it out.

Bis that say 유리병류 are for glass bottles. Be sure to remove any plastic or metal cap before throwing it away.

Bins labeled 캔류 are for cans and other metal objects.

There can be three separate bins for plastic. Those labeled P.E.T. are for the clear plastic usually found in water bottles while 플라스틱 is for the other kinds. Plastic wrap, vinyl, and plastic bags go into a separate bin labeled 비닐

Finally, bins for 스티로폼 are for any polystyrene foam that is clean and uncolored.

For buildings that have fewer bins, they might be grouped into different mixes so it is best to check with your landlord If your building does not have a specific location for recyclable trash, collect your recycling in any plastic bag and leave it in the designated area.

What to do with food waste

Food waste in Busan differs from other places in Korea. Many other cities require residents to purchase a special food waste bag. Busan saves plastic by using reusable bins that have either a sticker or chip indicating that fees for food waste removal have been paid. In larger apartment buildings these bins are provided by the complex and may be free standing or part of a device that weighs the food waste and charges accordingly. Smaller buildings usually require each residence to purchase separate food waste bins and chips. It is tempting to flush food waste down the toilet to save money, but this usually results in a blockage that ends up costing the residents of the building far more than the amount that’s saved from buying the chips.

Where to buy garbage bags

Depending on where you are from, the type of bag you used in your home country may be different. Garbage bags in Korea a specific for each district (although a special bag may be purchased that can be used in any district) and are available in a variety of sizes. The bags are usually white and come with instructions on which day each type of trash is collected. The white bags are specific for each district and can get up to 100L. Blue trash bags can be purchased as well and are generally used as shopping bags. These bags can be used in any district and have the same instructions on how to use them.

These bags can be purchased at almost every convenience store, chain supermarket, or mart. Usually smaller stores have the bags behind the counter at the front of the store while larger markets might have them in the aisle. If you can’t locate them, ask the cashier who will be more than happy to help you. Do your best to not overfill the bags. Trash collectors will leave any bag that is too full on the curb and fines could be issued.

Oversized Waste (대형 쓰레기)

What is oversized waste? Like the name says, it is any object that cannot fit into a conventional garbage bag. These include furniture, refrigerators, tvs, etc. Electronics generally fall into this category as they provide a particular challenge for disposal.

For these items, what you do with them depends largely on what size building you live in. Smaller buildings you need to contact the local district office to request disposal of these items. After you pay they will provide you a stick to place on the object. This process can be done online as well depending on your district. Afterwards place the object in the designated are on the appropriate day. For larger buildings, this process is usually taken care of by the building management. Simply take the item to the recycling area and speak with the manager who will tell you a price for disposal.

Collection time and place

Garbage collection times and location vary by district. Each general trash bag has the collection days on them or you can ask your landlord, real-estate agent, or building management. The bags also tell you what time to take items down. Generally, it is after sunset (between 6 and 8pm) until 11pm. Depending on how busy the garbage collectors are you might get away with later, but as a general rule try to get it earlier.

So what happens if you don’t follow the rules? Each district has the power to impose a fine of up to 300,000 won for improper disposal depending on where you live. It is not uncommon for waste disposal personnel to sort through a trash bag looking for personally identifiable items like mail or receipts to fine those who don’t take sorting their trash seriously. It sounds complicated. But after a short time you will get used to it and you can be proud of how you helped to improve our planet by reducing the amount of items that end up in the landfill.
