Busan Citizen Park Stamp Tour

Located in the center of the city is one of best places to visit in Busan, Citizen Park.  With Busan being a coastal city filled with beautiful beaches sometimes people might not realize that Busan additionally offers up such a beautiful public space for people to exercise, picnic, relax and enjoy themselves.  The history of this park is rich in that it has had a variety of uses dating back to 1910.  Long ago, the area where the park currently is the land was used as a racetrack and then in 1945 it became Camp Hialeah which was the US headquarters for the military forces in Korea.  Because of this interesting history many of the buildings and structures which have been repurposed from their prior use as military buildings.

Citizen Park became the park it is today in 2010 when Busan decided to design and renovate the space. The park has been created with five different themes that include, “Memory, Culture, Participation, Nature and Fun.”  The well thought out plan makes it so that there is something for everyone here.  Throughout all four seasons you can enjoy a variety of fun events and activities as well Getting to the park is easy since it is located right in the center of the city.  The easiest way to get there would be to take the subway and get off at Bujeon Station (Line 1) and go out exit 7.  It is about a 10-minute walk to get to the park.  Or you can find a variety of buses that will also put you close by.
Since this park is such a vast space, it can be a little overwhelming to know where to start.  In order to make it manageable and fun for it’s visitors the park has created a program that allows for visitors to download an application and take part in a virtual stamp tour that takes you to 10 different locations throughout the park.  It is really a simple and convenient way to explore Citizens Park.

This tour is called Citizens Park GOGO Stamp tour.  This program began in June of 2019 and is still ongoing.  If you are looking for a fun activity for a date or something to do with your family, this is the perfect solution.  It is free, fun and provides you with a well thought out plan to experience all areas of the park.

The stamp tour is also an environmentally friendly stamp tour in that it is done virtually through a cell phone application so that no waste is created.  To participate in the tour all you must do is simply download the STAMP POP application to your phone and you can begin.  Once the application is downloaded, you open the application and scroll down to where you will find a list of group stamp locations including one titled “CITIZEN PARK”.

By clicking on the button labeled “CITIZEN PARK” it opens to ten different locations that you must find around the park.  You need to go to the designated locations and open the application and it will open to your camera’s screen where you must find a designated token that will appear in each of the locations.  After you reach all ten locations and receive confirmation you can receive a prize from the information center between 9am and 6pm.  This makes it a fun and exciting mission to travel around the park in pursuit of winning your prize. The first place you can go on your stamp tour is Busan Citizens Park History Gallery.  As I mentioned earlier, this park has a very rich and interesting history that dates to the Japanese colonial era.  Learn about the time when this park was home to the US forces and when its prior name was Camp Hialeah.  You can take a trip back in time and see a variety of different records and artifacts that relate to the park and it’s past.

Another place you can check out is the Culture and Art Village.  This building was repurposed from its previous role as the sergeants lodging during the time when this land was occupied by the US forces.  This space supports the arts by hosting programs and providing space for concerts and exhibitions.

Next you can head to the Community Garden.  This area is also known as the “Garden of Dedication”.  It really shows the heart of the people of Busan because it hosts the citizens’ own flowerbeds. In addition, this garden hosts arrangements from the other
Another spot on the tour that is beautiful during the spring, is the King Cherry Tree Trail.  Compared to some of the other famous cherry blossom tree areas, this one is less well known. If you go here during cherry blossom season, you will be in a sea of pink petals. This lovely trail provides visitors with 600 meters to walk along and take selfies among the 160 king cherry trees that construct this pathway.

And if you have children or are a kid at heart you will love going to the Pororo Library next on your tour.  This library is themed after one of Korea’s animated characters that kids go wild for. In front of the library building there are sculptures of the different animated characters that make for a great photo zone as well.  Inside you will find a variety of books, and character related items.  This part of the park is great to be able to get inside and get some shade from the hot sun or shelter if it starts to rain.
As I went along using the Stamp Tour application, I had a great time and found that I was discovering the park with a new frame of mind.  Even though I have been to Citizen Park many times, I found that by having a goal I was motivated to check out new corners that I haven’t visited before.  It gave me a chance to develop an interest in the park and appreciate all the different parts I had ignored in the past.  The described destinations are just a portion of the locations you will need to go when you set out on your journey.  In order to complete the mission, you must use the application and visit all ten locations and then visit the Visitors Center to claim your prize.
