Cheongsapo Cat Village

Tucked between two of the most popular beaches of Busan, Haeundae and Songjeong, is a lovely neighborhood called Cheongsapo, filled with charm, cafes, great seafood and cats.  This area might go overlooked by tourists and even by Busan residents even though it is sandwiched right in the middle of the action.  People may not know about this area because it isn’t as easy to get to as some other parts of town. This area isn’t as developed much as other places around Busan, but this makes it special.  Cheongsapo retains its traditional countryside beauty in addition to some beautiful places where people can enjoy a cup or coffee or wonderful seafood.

There are a few ways to get to this area. If you want to walk you can take subway line number two and walk from Jangsan station exit number 7, or you can take the local bus number 2 and walk down to the lovely port side seafood village. Additionally, if you happen to take Busan City Tour Bus there is a stop that will take you directly there.

Cheongsapo has long been known for its delicious seafood restaurants lining the port.  In particular, people head to this area specially to try the clams and eel, which are viewed as stamina foods.  In fact this area has become so well known for its seafood they actually have a designated “Cheongsapo Seafood Town”, which has a map showing all of the local restaurants that serve up the famous grilled clams and eel.

Although this town has been known for its tasty seafood, in recent years the area has become popular due to its residents.  These aren’t the typical residents you might expect because these residents are street cats.  Maybe it makes sense that when you have so many seafood restaurants concentrated in one area you will attract a crowd. This crowd of sea food lovers wasn’t necessarily the crowd the restaurants and neighborhood intended to attract, but these clever felines realized that Cheongsapo would be the perfect place to call home.

There is a saying that cats choose their owners, and in this case, these stray cats chose an entire seaside port village. It wasn’t long ago that cats in Korea were not as welcome as they are now. In the past, these furry friends were viewed as pests and were not wanted running around the neighborhood. Despite their previous bad reputation, the cats of Cheongsapo were able to win over the hearts of the residents and make themselves permanent residents.

These cats went from being pests to becoming the stars of the show. Busan realized that they were an asset to the city and designated Cheongsapo to officially have a cat village. So back in 2016 the official cat village got its start when it was selected to be part of a project choosing local entrepreneurs. This was also the year in which Cat Footprint opened, a store which sells various souvenirs such as cat related signs, water dishes, wooden keepsakes and stickers. The great thing about the sale of all these items is that proceeds go back to benefiting the street cats.

When I first heard about this cat village, I didn’t know what to expect. I had never been to Cheongsapo and am not really a big fan of seafood, so I had never ventured over to this part of Busan before in search of grilled clams or eel. But when I heard that there was an entire village honoring my favorite animal, I quickly made my way to the small fishing village to see what all the talk was about.
When I took the taxi from Jangsan station to Cheongsapo I tried to ask the taxi driver about the cat village, but he had no idea what I was talking about. He told me that the village was famous for clams and seafood, but he had never heard of an actual cat village.  So, I was left to search for the famous felines on my own.

The interesting part about arriving in the village was it felt like I was on a treasure hunt. Instead of searching for gold or diamonds though, I was on the search for my favorite furry animals. Of course, cats are not always the most cooperative animals. They live life on their own terms, and even though the cats of Cheongsapo were given the prestigious title of being residents of an official cat village, they still behave very much like normal cats. I wandered around the village feeling a bit disappointed at first because there were no cats in sight.

As I made my way around, I started to notice lovely signs for the cats.  For example, there was a yellow warning diamond shaped sign that said, “CAUTION: Cats at Play”. And upon closer inspection I realized that next to the sign was also a small shelter containing food and water for the cats. So, I was getting closer to finding the elusive cats of Cheongsapo Cat Village.

I decided that asking for help might be my best way to find them.  I wandered into one of the lovely cafes in the neighborhood and was immediately rewarded by finding one of the elusive cats inside the café, sunbathing in one of the window side seats. This cat was extremely friendly and seemed to be the perfect ambassador to represent the cats of Cheongsapo. I went over to pet her, and she was eager to get petted.  She rolled on her back completely fearless and excited to get attention. Then, as if guiding me on a café tour, she leaped up onto the barista’s counter and walked around the café as if she owned the place.

PERFECT! The barista told me that this cat has lived in Cheongsapo since before the cafe was built, and that she has always been very friendly with all the customers who come to see her. Next to the café’s outside window she even has her own cat house with her name “Han Ok” written in Korean. I asked the barista if there were other cats around this area, but she said that Han Ok was the only one that regularly came around her café.  Just as she mentioned that I learned the reason why. Han Ok leaped from the café window ledge and ran off in hot pursuit of another cat that had come onto the café’s property. Han Ok is very territorial and sees herself as the queen of this cat village.

When venturing to Cheongsapo Cat Village you must be prepared to go on a search for the cats. Cats will do as they please, and that means that you might be able to see some of the cats, but they also might be hiding from Han Ok. I was advised that when going to the village it’s a good idea to bring cat treats to win over the cats and get them to come closer to you. If you have never been to Cheongsapo, I recommend checking it out. You will find a beautiful corner of Busan that hosts some of the most charming furry residents you will ever meet.
