Living in Busan as an Egyptian student with Taekwondo
부산에서 이집트 학생으로 산다는 것
I want to share with you the experiences of an Egyptian student living in Busan. I moved to Busan fulltime in 2014, having first visited Korea as a tourist with my family in 2011.My mother has been a Korean culture enthusiast ever since her own student days here many years ago. I remember that instead of the fairy tales that Egyptian children usually hear before sleeping at night, my mom used to tell us stories about Korea. I learned about Korean culture, Korean places, Korean folklore, and Korean fairy tales, through those stories.
When I was 4 years old, I began training in Korean taekwondo, which is still my main sport today. From my childhood I knew about kimchi, kimbap, bulgogi and other Korean food as my mom sometimes cooked Korean food for us or took us to a Korean restaurant whenever she missed it. I remember that I memorized Korean songs even before I knew any Korean. As for Korean dramas, I can remember that I enjoyed watching many of them with my mom when I was a child. So, I felt familiar with Korea from a young age.
이집트인 유학생의 시선으로 본 부산에서의 경험에 대해 이야기해보고자 한다. 2014년에 부산에 왔지만 2011년에 가족과 함께 여행차 한국에 방문한 적이 있었다. 사실 나 와 한국의 인연은 어린 시절 한국이 내 삶의 일부가 되면서부터 이미 시작되었다. 잠들기 전 아이들에게 들려주는 동 화책 대신, 나의 어머니는 한국에 관한 이야기를 해 주셨다. 그렇다. 나는 그 때부터 이 이야기들 속에서 한국의 문화, 한국의 장소, 민속, 동화들을 배웠다. 어머니는 학생 때 처음 한국에 다녀오신 후로 한국 마니아가 되셨다고 해도 과언이 아니다.
나는 네 살이 되던 해 스포츠를 시작했다. 당연하게도 한국의 무술 태권도였다. 내가 어릴 때부터 한국 음식이 그리워질 때마다 한국 요리를 하시거나 한국 식당에 데려가시던 어머니 덕에 김치, 김밥, 불고기를 비롯한 한국 음식을 알게 되었다. 한국에 와서 한국어를 배우기 전에 이미 한국 노래를 외우기도 했다. 아주 어릴 때부터 어머니와 함께 한국 드라마도 즐겨 보았다. 나는 처음 부터 한국을 아주 친숙하게 느꼈던 셈이다.
When I was in my third year of middle school my mom achieved her position as a Korean university professor, and we moved to Busan. My life here in Busan started with studying the Korean language, which I felt was a must for me because communication is so important. I was lucky to find that Busan has a multicultural school helping foreigners to understand Korean language. For me, one year was enough to move to a regular Korean school, in which I experienced the real Korean school life and got adjusted into Korean society. Taekwondo still is my main sport today. I won many gold medals in the National Championships in Egypt and had already received a black belt before coming to Korea. Practicing Taekwondo in its country of origin is a golden opportunity for me, one which I feel lucky to have.
Since my first days in Busan one of my priorities was to join a taekwondo club and to continue my practice. Finding such a club was easy in the country that developed taekwondo. Hopefully, I will be able to continue to participate in many competitions in Busan even though my studies are my primary focus.
중학교 3학년이 되던 해, 나는 한국 대학에서 교수로 일하게 된 어머니를 따라 마침내 부산으로 오게 되었다. 주변 사람들과 말이 통하지 않아 의사소통이 되지 않는 상황은 내게 무척이나 답답한 것이어서, 나의 부산 생활은 한국어를 배우는 것에서부터 시작했다. 운 좋게도 부산에는 외국 인이 한국어를 배울 수 있는 다문화학교가 있었고, 나는 1년만에 진정한 한국 학교생활과 한국 사회를 배울 수 있는 정규 한국 학교로 진학할 수 있었다.
태권도도 여전히 즐기고 있다. 사실 나는 어린 시절 이집트에서 태권도를 시작한 이래 이집트 전국대회에서 여러 번 금메달을 땄고, 한국에 오기 전에 이미 검은띠였다. 하지만 태권도의 본고장인 한국에서 태권도를 한다는 것은 행운 중의 행운이었다. 부산 생활 초기에 내가 가장 먼저 한 일 중 하나가 태권도 학원에 등록해 운동을 계속하는 것 이었다. 태권도의 나라 한국에서는 훌륭한 트레이닝을 받을 수 있는 태권도 학원을 집 근처에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있었다. 학업에 열중하느라 한동안 태권도를 쉬긴 했지만 계속해서 부산 내 태권도 대회에서 우승해 금메달을 딸 수 있었으면 한다.
Studying in Korea is one of the challenges facing foreigners. Korea is one of the leading countries in education and has top rated universities. Unfortunately, for foreigners, the Korean school system is hard to follow. Even though you learn Korean language, it is not always enough to be able to understand the rest of the school subjects properly. In my case the best solution was to do home schooling in English. I had to self-study all the subjects in English and I took exams yearly in the Egyptian embassy. So, when I applied for university, I had a good chance through my good records shown in the Egyptian school certificate.
It was very difficult to study and prepare as I wanted to choose the major of electronic engineering, which requires extensive preparation in math and physics. At the same time, I also had to study Korean language to achieve TOPIK level 4 competence at a minimum. After much preparation I was able to enter the major of engineering at one of the best universities in Korea, which is Busan National University.
한국에서 학업을 이어가는 것은 외국인으로서 힘든 일 중 하나다. 그러므로 여기서 한국 교육에 관한 몇 가지 팁으로 내 경험담을 나누고자 한다. 한국은 교육수준이 높은 국가 중 하나 로, 일류 대학과 높은 교육 시스템을 갖추고 있다. 하지만 외국인에게 한국 학교 시스템은 한국어를 배운다고 하더라도 어렵다. 특히 나와 비슷한 나이에 한국에 왔다면 한국어를 배운 정 도로는 모든 교과과정을 한국어로 이해할 수 없다. 그래서 내 경우 최선의 방법은 이집트 학교에서 쓰는 언어인 영어로 홈스쿨링을 하며 한국 학교에 다니는 것이었다. 홈스쿨링을 통해 한국어보다 이해하기 쉬운 영어로 전과목을 독학하며 매년 이집트 대사관에서 시험을 치렀다. 덕분에 대학에 응시할 때는 한국 학교 생활로 기른 한국어능력과 사회성을 바탕으로 이집트 학교 수료증에 따른 좋은 점수를 이용할 수 있었 다. 쉬웠다는 말은 아니다.
실제로 모든 것을 독학하는 것은 무척 어려웠고, 특히 수학과 물리학을 제대로 준비해둬야 하는 전자공학으로 진로를 잡은 후부터는 이집트 선생님들과 영상통화를 하며 개인 과외를 받아야 할 때도 있었다. 그와 동시에 TOPIK4를 따기 위해 한국어 공부도 열심히 해야 했다. 나와 비슷하게 한국 대학에 진학하는 상황이라면 전공과 관련된 책을 많이 읽는 게 도움이 될 거라고 생각한다. 나는 이런 과정을 거쳐 한국 최고의 공학 대학 중 하나인 부산대학교에 입학한 것이다.
Another great experience for me in Busan was my participation in a competition held by the city for ideas to attract Muslim tourists to Busan. This was aimed at developing tourism in Busan, one of the most beautiful cities in Korea. I enjoyed cooperating with two Korean friends in planning a program to attract more Muslims to visit Busan. Our project received second place, but we consider our win to be first place since there was no first- place winner. As a foreigner living in Busan you can have many opportunities to participate in events like this. Busan is organizing events for foreigners to get them more integrated in Korean society, for which I feel very grateful. I am sure life in Korea as a foreigner will provide you with memorable experiences and will make you an enthusiast of the Korean culture, just as it did for my family.
부산에서 겪은 다른 좋은 일 중 하나는 부산에 무슬림 관광객을 유치하는 부산시 공모전에 참가했던 것이다. 무슬림 국가를 포함해 더 많은 관광객들을 전세계에서 유치할 수 있는 한국의 아름다운 도시 부산에서 관광산업을 발전시키는 데 기여할 수 있었던 좋은 기회였다. 나는 한국인 친구 두 명과 함께 더 많은 무슬림 관광객을 부산에 유치할 수 있는 프로그램을 기획했다. 운 좋게 우리 프로젝트가 2위상을 받았지만 실제로는 1위와 마찬가지였다고 생각한다. 1위가 없는 2위였기 때문이다.
어쨌든 고맙게도 부산에는 외국인과 어울려 살 수 있도록 여러 가지 행사를 기획하고 있으니 부산에 사는 외국인으로서 참 여해 볼 기회도 많이 있다. 간단히 말하자면, 한국에서 외국인으로 살아간다는 것은 분명 잊을 수 없는 경험이며 당신도 나의 어머니처럼 한국 마니아가 될지도 모른다 .

Shady Loai S. Nasrat은 이집트 출신의 청소년이자 한 국에서 가장 유명한 아랍계 교수로 부산외국어대학교에서 강의하고 있는 Dr. Mona Farouk M. Ahmed의 아들이다. Shady는 부산에서 학업을 계속하고 있으며, 부산비트는 지난 호에서 월드 클래스 피겨 스케이팅 선수인 Shad의 동생 Sherry Nasrat을 만나기도 했다.
