Delivered food, online classes, queuing to purchase masks on a day assigned by your birth year, the dark looks you receive for coughing in public, the dreaded possibility that you could be the reason for a grandparent’s illness. These have all become normal in 2020. Social distancing is a policy that has been imposed upon all of us, but here are some ways to spend some time alone and reflect on how lucky we are. 

배달음식, 온라인 강의, 태어난 해에 맞춰 마스크를 사려고 줄 서기, 공공장소에서 기침을 하면 받는 험악한 시선들, 나 때문에 할아버지가 아프실지도 모른다는 끔찍한 가능성. 이 모든 것이 2020년의 일상이 되었다.사회적 거리두기는 우리 모두에게 주어진 의무가 되었지만, 혼자 시간을 보내며 우리가 얼마나 행운아인지 느낄 수 있는 몇 가지 방법을 소개한다.

 The Flu is medical disaster movie from 2013 based around a H5N1 outbreak in Bundang. The disease is brought to Korea via illegal immigrants in a container and has mutated to become extremely contagious and incredibly deadly. Jang Hyuk and Su Ae play the romantic leads in a story that begins with some of the tackyness that can be associated with Korean films (especially those with any hint of romance), but builds tension as it progresses. As we have all experienced a pandemic, some of the emphasis placed on showing how the virus can be spread may feel forced, however the film develops a grip on the viewer as the outbreak spreads. 

감기는 2013년 분당에 H5N1바이러스가 퍼진 의학 재난 사건을 다룬 영화다. 이 바이러스는 컨테이너 속 불법체류자를 통해 한국에 전파되어 돌연변이를 일으켜 어마어마한 전염력과 치사율을 보인다. 장혁과 수애가 전형적인 한국 영화다운 (특히 로맨스) 신파를 이어가긴 하지만 영화가 진행될수록 긴 장감이 고조된다. 우리 모두 팬데믹 상황을 겪은 만큼, 바이러스가 어떻게 전파되는지 강조하는 장면들은 조금 억지스럽게 느껴지긴 하지만 관객들을 사로잡는 전개를 보여준다.

Director Kim Sungsu pulls at the heart strings at times, despite also having a few cringe-worthy moments, but generally drags the viewer along with The Flu. The film attempts to build complexity by incorporating the political response, and highlights how political pressure may in fact come from the international community. In all The Flu is a fun way to kill a few hours, but have some tissues ready and be thankful that it is only a movie. 

조금 오글거리는 장면들이 있긴 해도 김성수 감독의 심금을 울리는 장면들이 이어지는데, 전반적으로는 관객들로 하 여금 감기에 집중하도록 한다. 영화는 정 치적인 요소를 통해 보다 복잡한 이야기 를 다루며 정치적 압박은 국제 사회로부 터 오는지도 모른다는 메시지를 던진다. 감기는 킬링타임용으로 괜찮은 영화 지만 휴지를 준비해 두는 것을 추천한 다. 이것이 픽션이라는 사실에 감사하면 서 말이다.

Deranged (2012) is another outbreak style thriller that revolves around mutant horsehair worms. This is not a spoiler - the Korean title is yeonkasi (연가시) which means hairworm. Park Jungwoo directs the film, and it may leave viewers feeling a little more squeamish as the gruesome nature of the worms is revealed. Kim Myungmin stars as Jaehyuk, a downtrodden employee at a pharmaceutical company, alongside Kim Dongwan, who plays his brother, Jaepil; a cop who previously helped them to both squander large sums on investment speculation. The two become reliant on one another as the epidemic spreads and Jaehyuk strives to save his family. The plot thickens as Jaepil’s fiance, Yeonjoo (Lee Hanui) is involved in the medical response that begins to research possible cures. The film attempts to analyze the role that capitalism plays in modern society and especially in the medical industry. Deranged will definitely have you eager to continue watching, but leans a little more toward the horror end of the spectrum, without the emotion of The Flu. 

연가시(2012)는 연가시 돌연변이를 중심으로 일어나는 또 다른 재난 스릴러다. 이건 스포일러가 아니다. 한국 연가 시는 선충류의 일종이다. 박정우 감독의 작품이며, 연가시의 끔찍한 본성을 보여주는 탓에 관객들이 역겨움을 느낄 수도 있다. 김명민은 착취 당하는 제약회사 직원 재혁 역을 맡았고, 김동완은 재혁의 동생이자 주식 투기로 형과 본인의 돈을 날린 형사 재필 역을 맡았다. 형제는 전염병이 퍼지 며 서로를 의지하게 되고, 재혁은 그의 가족을 구하기 위해 고군분투한다. 영화는 재필의 연인인 연주(이하늬)가 치료약 연구에 참 여하게 되며 흥미진진해진다. 현대 사회, 특히 의료계에서 자본주의가 어떤 역할을 하는지 보여주고자 하는 영화다. 연가시는 분명 흥미롭게 볼 수 있는 작품이지만 감기와 같은 감성보다는 조금 더 호러에 가깝다고 할 수 있다.
