37th Busan International Short Film Festival
Originally slated for late April, as it usually happens, the 37th edition of the Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) has been postponed in reaction to the Corona situation and will instead take place end of August (exact dates to be confirmed), at the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City and at the BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema in Jung-gu. This year’s program will present 155 short films from 45 countries, sorted in 6 main sections: Competition, Guest Country, Hub of Asia, Beyond Shorts, Encore Shorts, Shorts for Kids.
원래라면 4월 말로 예정되어 있던 제 37회 부산 국제단편영화제(BISFF)가 코로나 사태로 인해 8 월로 연기(정확한 날짜 미정)되었다. 장소는 센텀시티에 있는 영화의전당과 중구의 BNK 부산은행 아트시네마이다. 올해는 45개국 155개 단편영화를 경쟁, 주빈국, 아시아 쇼츠, 비욘드 쇼츠, 앙코르 쇼츠, 어린이 섹션 등 총 6개 부문으로 나누어 상영한다.
Since 2018, BISFF’s International Competition and Korean Competition are qualifying for the Oscars®, allowing the winners of the two Grand Prix to submit their films for consideration to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles. This year’s Guest Country is Belgium, with 3 programs (including “Belgium Cineaste”, a retrospective of shorts from acclaimed director Chantal Akerman) and a masterclass. As for the “Prequel” program, it will introduce next year’s guest: Brazil. In Hub of Asia, you will find three programs: “AFiS Special” (in collaboration with the Busan Asian Film School), “Mongolian Shorts” (a showcase from the Mongolian National University of Arts & Culture), and “Occupy Asia” (a thematic program on protests, citizen movements, social upheavals and democracy-in-the-making).
2018년부터 부산국제단편영화제는 국제경쟁 및 한국경쟁 부문의 최우수작품상을 받은 두 작품은 LA 영화예술과학아카데미에 제출이 가능해 오스카 후보 심사 대상이 된다. 올해 주빈국 은 벨기에로 세 개 프로그램(샹탈 아커만 감독 특별전 “벨기에 시네아스트” 등)과 마스터클래스에 참가한다. “프리퀄” 프로그램에서는 내년 주빈국인 브라질을 소개한다. 아시아 쇼츠 부문 에는 “AFiS 공모전” (부산 아시아 영화학교와 콜라보), “몽골 쇼츠” (몽골 국립 문화예술대학 쇼케이스), “아시아를 점령하라” (시위, 시민운동, 사회적 격동, 민주주의 발달을 주제로 한 프로그램) 이 세 가지 프로그램이 있다.

While several other staples of the festival remain, such as “Operation Kino” (a competition of short documentaries made by film and media students from Busan universities), “Curtain Call” (a best-of of last year’s most awarded international films) or “Prism” (experimental films and practices, including a live performance by Dutch filmmaker Joost Rekveld), a large part of the program is being christened this year. For instance, in the Beyond Shorts section, significant focus will be given to new technologies and storytelling through “VR Shorts” and “Interactive Shorts”, inviting the audience to be more active and participative. In the Encore Shorts section, two original programs might also peak your curiosity. Showing the festival’s dedication to local films and communities, “Busan IN” will screen 5 films collected from various events and organizations (Busan Citizen Filming Festival, Busan Cinema Center Academy, Project 10 Days, Liquid Arts 72H Film Festival). A unique chance for Busan citizens - Koreans as well as foreigners - to show their works on screen at the Busan Cinema Center! Meanwhile, the true nature of the mysterious “Surprise!” program will purposely not be announced. The films themselves will remain a well-kept secret by the festival team until the screening, allowing the audience to fully discover them and be, well, surprised! Only one information has seeped through: that program will be adults-only…

“오퍼레이션 키노”(부산 내 대학 영화 및 미디어 전공 학생들이 만든 단편 다큐멘터리 경쟁 부문), “커튼콜” (작년에 수상한 국제 영화들 중 최고작), “프리즘” (네덜란드 영화제작가 요스트 레크벨트 의 라이브 퍼프먼스 등 실험적인 영화) 등 다른 주요 섹션들도 있다. 예를 들어 비욘드 쇼츠 섹션에 서는 “VR 쇼츠”와 “인터랙티브 쇼츠”를 통한 신기술 및 스토리텔링으로 관객들은 더욱 생동감 있고 참여적인 체험을 할 수 있을 것이다. 앙코르 쇼츠 섹션의 두 가지 오리지널 프로그램도 궁금증을 자아낸다. 지역 영화 및 커뮤니티에 대한 영화제의 헌신을 보여주는 “부산 IN”은 다양 한 행사 및 기관(부산시민영화제, 영화의전당 아카데미, 프로젝트텐데이즈, 리퀴드 아트 72시간 영화 제)의 5개 영화를 상영한다. 부산에 사는 한국인 및 외국인 시민들은 부산 영화의 전당에서 자신의 작 품을 상영할 수도 있다! 한편 미스테리한 “서프라 이즈!” 프로그램에 대해서는 일부러 발표하지 않는다. 상영작은 상영 때까지 철저히 비밀로 부쳐져 관객들은 작품을 보고 놀라게 될 것이다! 지금까지 단 한 가지 정보만 밝혀졌다. 이 프로그램은 성인 만 관람 가능하다는 것…

Another novelty for the festival was the creation of a production support to help fund a Korean short film through a project contest
which was held in autumn 2019: the result of that first initiative is ID Card by director Yoon Hye-seong, a dramatic take on Korea’s dubious workplace ethics which will premiere at BISFF 2020’s Opening Ceremony.
부산국제단편영화제만의 또 다른 특징은 2019년 가을에 열린 프로젝트 컨테스트의 한국 단편영화를 지원하는 프로덕션 서포트가 있다는 것이다. 이 덕에 한국의 모호한 직장 윤리에 관한 윤혜성 감독의 사원증이 2020년 부산국제단편영화제 개막작으로 상영된다.

Sébastien Simon graduated from the E.S.E.C film school and from Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. His latest works as filmmaker include One-minded (2014) and The Troubled Troubadour (2016). He is involved with several film festivals in various capacities: programmer for the Busan International Short Film Festival and the Jeju French Film Festival, preselection member for the Slamdance Film Festival and the Seoul International Extreme- Short Image & Film Festival, and the workshop director for Rencontres Cinématographiques de Cavaillon.
