“Being an expat spouse is a great opportunity to do whatever you want.”

Hege Beate Stokmo Melilla, is a 45-year-old Norwegian expat living in Busan and has graduated with a Master’s in Fine Arts from Kyungsung University.

Moving to Busan as a non-working expat spouse, Hege found she had all the time in the world and saw it as an opportunity to do whatever she wanted.

For the first three years Hege was busy getting the family – two teenagers, then 11 and 15, and a husband into a good everyday routine in their new South Korean environment more than 8000 kilometers away from their home country, Norway. Among other things, Hege also had time to be an expat/toursist and to tick off her list all the things she wanted to see, try and taste in South Korea. The initial plan for the family was to stay only two years in South Korea, but then Hege’s husband got the opportunity to continue his job in Busan

“Then we decided to stay longer because the kids thrived here and we really enjoyed living in Korea." Hege remembers.

The decision to extend their stay was the turning point for Hege, and she asked herself: "How do I get the most out of this opportunity?" A question she still keeps echoing.

“If I was going to stay in Korea for two or three years, I probably wouldn’t have spent time taking a master's but by then I had already explored Korea as an expat tourist. I came to a new phase where I needed to develop myself. I got to know an expat friend who had taken a master's degree and she gave me the inspiration.”

So Hege then took the decision to hit the books and enroll as a fulltime student. Busan has a plethora of universities and other possibilities for study. If you already have a bachelor's degree you can’t get another bachelor's here in South Korea, you have to move on to a master's. A good piece of advice is to start the admission procedure early nas you might have to take a TOEFL test to prove your English ability is sufficient and, for some studies, you have to present a portfolio and have an interview.

“I began my admission process roughly 9 months ahead of the deadline. I must admit I didn’t do much research about the other univiersities; I knew my friend had succeeded in getting a Master’s in Fine Arts at Kyungsung University, so I decided to follow her path. I had nothing to lose come rain or shine.”

Back in Norway, Hege had worked full time as a mental health nurse. In her spare time, she had always enjoyed drawing and being very creative. Back in 2007 she took her first painting course and several followed as the years went by. However, painting remained a hobby. Her Norwegian bachelor's and master's degrees were focused on health care, not on the fine arts. But starting with a few steps can lead to a journey that can continue as long as your determination lasts. Hege points out.

“I knew I would be very occupied, but I like being occupied. For me it is very meaningful to have something specific to do and to have a goal.”

Unsurprisingly, language was the major everyday challenge. The university recommended which books to read and

helped Hege get the materials she needed to study. Studying at an undergraduate level you have to speak Korean, but at the master's level, English is sufficient. However, you need to be on your toes to make sure you get all the important information translated.

Examined by Surprise!
Hege was the only non-Korean speaker in her class and at the end of the first semester, Hege was really taken by surprise due to the language problems. On that specific day, her 11-year-old son suddenly had to go to the hospital and Hege had to give her role as a mother top priority over her studies. Prior, one of Hege’s fellow classmates had asked her to hang some of her paintings up for an exhibition at the university’s gallery, a request Hege had accepted without a second thought. Having spent a good part of the day at the hospital, Hege was not even sure if she would make it to the university that day. Luckily, after the visit at the hospital, she decided to rush to the university for a quick visit.

“Arriving I realized all the teachers from the art department were present and that it was an examination that was taking place. This was the highlight of the semester! I had to present my artist statement right there on the spot. I was really taken by surprise but then I thought, well, I just have to make the best out of it.”

Hege laughs as she describes how she, in a split second, had to adjust to the situation. The day had a happy ending with all A's earned and a lesson learned; ask more than twice and be very specific about all questions to avoid information getting lost in translation or getting into a tangled mess of misunderstandings.

The Hugging Teacher
She emphasizes the Koreans did everything they could to try to help her, and she felt they created a very welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

“Each semester my fellow students took turns translating information from the university’s intranet for me and one of our professors actually started out all of her classes by hugging each one of her students.”

Hege recalls while she laughs gratefully, many times when she had been sitting listening to something she didn’t understand, she would get a written or oral translation. Other times, after class she had to find an English book covering the topic. To be present at the lectures is mandatory even if you don’t understand what is being said.

“My advantage was I studied Western art - not Korean - and consequently the sources were often originally written
in English.”

That’s an important point Hege wants to pass on if you are inspired to follow her example. If you are not fluent in Korean, make sure the sources for your study can be found in a language you understand. Another tip is to make good connections with the Graduate School office as they can provide valuable guidance, Hege also got great support from the art director throughout her studies.

Well - Truly not a Beach Bum
Looking back, Hege found the first and the last semesters the most challenging. During the two years, Hege had approximately one lecture of three hours, three or four times a week, the rest of the day she spent either painting at “her own private” campus studio she got free access to while studying at the university or she went home to hit the books.

“Once every two weeks, I gave myself time to go out with friends. The days I decided to be social I had to go home and write in the evening. Throughout the last semester I also had to write during the weekends.”

An intrusive question at this stage is if Hege feels she missed out on anything due to her studies. For instance, there must have been some weekends where everybody else seemed to be enjoying life at Busan’s countless beaches.

"But you know I´m from Tromsø, in the northern part of Norway, so actually I don’t like going to the beach and lie in the sun; for me it was perfect to have an excuse to stay away from the beach.”

Hege laughs apologetically as she points out she has children, and a husband and, of course, other obligations.

“I might have missed some expat lunches but, overall, I feel I gained a lot. When you have to interact with native Koreans on an everyday basis, you learn so much, compared to if you just meet random Koreans when you are shopping, and the day I got my master's degree at the graduation ceremony was just…. Incredible!"

Hege never thought she would quit, but she reveals she always had a fear the university might “kick” her out, as the systems and the demands are so different from her home country.

Now as a member of a very exclusive club holding a Norwegian passport and a Korean Master's degree in Fine Arts, new opportunities opened up for Hege. Her first solo exhibition is set to be from the April 22 to May 5 at Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul.

Are you inspired? Then come and meet Hege Beate Stokmo Melilla at her exhibition's opening on Friday, April 22 at 6 pm in Seoul and check out her homepage: www.hegeb.net

Hegeb.net

Hege’s Good Advice

• Start to prepare early

• Choose a subject you enjoy – make it feel like a pleasure.

• Choose a course of study where a part of it is practical – then you avoid some language challenges. Fine Art is 50% practical and 50% theoretical.

• Choose a field with sources in a language you understand.

• Contact the Graduate School office at the university where you want to apply, and go there in person to get help applying.

• Ask about every single detail, rather too many questions – than too many misunderstandings.

• Be very proactive, independent and eager to motivate yourself.

• Be extremely open and expect that anything can happen.

• Have the attitude: I have nothing to lose.

Profile l Hege Beate Stokmo Melilla (헤게 비아테 스토크모 메릴라)

Her art is based on an interest in different perspectives and parallel realities. These ideas are depicted by female figures and rabbits connected to her childhood dreams. She is inspired by early experiences, phenomenology, the subjective comprehension and the cultural experience of living in South Korea for almost six years. Hopefully her artworks can be a catalyst to alternative interpretations and multiple meanings.
