Perfect eyesight is a dream for a great number of people around the world. Whether imperfections are caused by a slight deformation of the eye or through the natural process of aging, dealing with imperfect vision can be costly and annoying. Thankfully, with the miracle of technology, having perfect eyesight can be achieved fairly easily. Busan is a hub for vision corrective surgeries and one of the premier eye hospitals in Busan is the Balgun Eye Clinic (BGN). BGN was opened in Busan and has expanded establishing branches in Seoul. It attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world each year. I spoke with Maria Valchenko, manager of the International Marketing Department for BGN Eye Clinic for a chat about the hospital and corrective eye surgeries.

완벽한 시력은 전세계 많은 사람들의 꿈이기도 하다. 병 또는 노화로 인한 시력 저하는 돈도 많이 들고 불편하다. 다행히 기술의 발전 덕에 완벽한 시력을 얻는 것은 그다지 어렵지 않다. 부산은 시력교정 수술의 허브로, 부산 밝은눈 안과는 부산 최고의 안과 중 하나다. 밝은눈안과는 부산을 시작으로 서울에도 여러 분점이 있다. 매년 수천 명의 환자 들이 이곳을 찾는다. 밝은눈안과 해외사업부 대리 발첸코 마리아(Maria Valchenko)를 만나 시력교정술에 대해 물어 보았다.

Christopher (C): Can you tell us a little bit about your clinic?

C: 간단한 병원 소개 부탁 드립니다.

Maria (M): We’re actually pretty excited because 2020 will be our 20th anniversary. BGN eye clinic opened in the year 2000 in Busan because the founding doctor is from here. In 2005 we moved close to Lotte hotel and in 2009 we opened our first branch in Seoul. We mostly specialized in laser corrective surgery but in 2017 we opened the Buam branch. This branch allowed us to offer cataract and glaucoma services and has wards and beds for the patients needing care over multiple days. In 2018 we merged the two Busan branches and became an all-in-one stop for corrective eye services. We opened our newest branch in Seoul in 2019. Here in Busan we specialize in SMILE, dream lenses, and cataract surgeries.

M: 밝은눈안과는 2020년 20주년을 맞이하게 됩니다. 2000년에 개원했죠. 개원의가 부산 출신이었거든 요. 2005년 롯데호텔부산 근처로 옮겨왔고 2009년 에는 첫 서울 분점을 열었습니다. 대부분이 레이저 시력교정 수술을 주력으로 하고 있지만, 2017년에 개원한 부산서면점에는 백내장 및 녹내장 치료, 입 원 치료가 필요한 환자들을 위한 병동과 침상이 마 련되어 있습니다. 2018년에는 두 개의 부산 분점을 통합해 올인원 시력교정 수술을 제공하고 있습니다. 가장 최근인 2019년에는 서울에 분점을 열었습니 다. 부산서면점은 SMILE, 드림렌즈, 백내장 수술을 전문으로 합니다.  

C: How many people work for the clinic?

C: 직원은 몇 명인가요? 

M: Currently we have 11 doctors at our hospital. Four of them specialize in LASIK and SMILE procedures, five focus on cataract surgeries, one in different lenses, and one in retinal diseases. This doctor also specializes in providing alternate care to children who are too young for corrective surgery as well as people who are not good candidates for surgery or would rather not have it. We also have 150 nurses and support staff in our building.

M: 현재 11명의 의사가 있습니다. 그 중 4명은 라식과 스마일, 5명은 백내장, 1명은 다양한 렌즈, 다른 1명 은 망막 질병 전공입니다. 동시에 너무 어려서 시력 교정 수술을 받을 수 없는 어린이, 수술에 적합하지 않은 환자, 수술을 원치 않는 환자들을 위한 대체 치 료도 하고 있습니다. 건물 내에는 150여 명의 간호 사와 지원 스태프가 있습니다.

C: Tell me about this building we are in.

C: 현재 우리가 있는 이 건물에 대해 소개해 주세요.  

M: The hospital owns the building. We have 9 floors. The first floor is reception, a coffee shop for guests, and a VIP waiting area. The second floor is our center for cataract and presbyopia. On the third floor we have retina, glaucoma, and dream lens center. The fourth and seventh floor are dedicated to our LASIK and SMILE center. When a person comes for the first time, they visit the fourth floor for registration and evaluation. They consult with the doctors and if they are having the surgery on the same day then they go to the seventh floor which has the surgery rooms or all of the laser procedures. The fifth floor is our second surgery center dedicated for cataract and retina surgeries. Our in-patient center is on the sixth floor which has 31 beds, several common rooms, single and double rooms. The 8th floor has several VIP wards but mostly offices. In the Basement we have an office room and a canteen for employees. 

M: 병원 소유의 건물이에요. 총 9층 높이고요. 1층에 는 원무과와 방문객을 위한 커피숍, VIP 대기실이 있 습니다. 2층에는 백내장 및 노안 센터가, 3층은 망 막, 녹내장, 드림렌즈 센터입니다. 4층과 7층은 라식 과 스마일 센터입니다. 첫 방문이라면 4층에서 등록 및 검사를 진행합니다. 의사와 상담한 후 당일 수술 이 잡혔다면 7층 수술실로 향하거나 레이저 시술을 받습니다. 5층은 두 번째 수술 센터로 백내장과 망막 수술을 담당합니다. 입원 센터는 6층에 있고요. 입원 센터에는 31개의 병상이 마련되어 있는데, 다인실과 일인실, 이인실을 갖추고 있습니다. 8층에는 VIP 병 실이 있지만 대부분 공간은 사무실입니다. 지하에는 사무실과 직원 구내식당이 있습니다.

C: What type of patient usually comes here?

C: 어떤 환자들이 주로 방문하나요? 

M: Usually, around 60% of patients come here for laser corrective surgeries. For most of the longterm foreign residents it’s still cheaper to have that done here than in their home countries. For foreigners who travel here for the surgery it may be the same price as in their home country, like Russia, but the quality is much better so people still prefer to come to our hospital. For cataract surgeries, more foreigners are coming, but they are different from Korean patients. Foreigners have the surgery a bit later, usually after age 60 while Koreans prefer to have it starting from their mid-40s.

M: 60% 정도의 환자들은 레이저 시력교정 수술을 위 해 방문합니다. 대부분의 외국인 장기 체류자들의 경우, 고국에서보다 한국에서 시술 받는 것이 저렴 합니다. 수술을 위해 한국을 방문한 외국인이라면 비용은 비슷합니다. 예를 들어 한국과 러시아에서 수술에 들어가는 비용이 비슷할 거라는 의미죠. 하 지만 수술의 질은 한국이 확연히 우수하기에 여전히 저희 병원을 찾아오십니다. 백내장 수술을 위해 내원하는 외국인 환자도 계속 늘고 있지만 한국인 환자와는 차이가 있습니다. 외국인 환자는 60대 정도 로 약간 늦은 시기에 수술을 받는 반면 한국인 환자 들은 40대 중반부터 이른 수술을 받는 것을 선호합니다.

C: What can a foreigner expect when they visit your hospital?

C: 외국인 환자들은 무엇을 기대하며 내원하나요? 

M: First of all, we ask what kind of treatment they are interested in. Then we collect the patient history and begin the examination. The examination for laser correction is free because it isn’t covered by insurance and we need to know if the patient is suitable for treatment. Unfortunately, about 10% of patients are not suitable for treatment. The examination takes about one and a half hours. Then they visit the doctors. Most of our doctors speak English but if needed translation services are provided. During the consultation we explain the options for the patient and they can book the surgery for a different day or proceed on the same day. After the surgery we provide follow up visits and have English speakers available as well. We also have a discount program with a local hotel for anyone needing an extended stay. One of the things we also provide is a free night stay in that hotel.

M: 우선 환자 본인이 어떤 치료에 관심이 있는지 확인 합니다. 그 후 환자의 정보를 수집하고 검사를 실시 합니다. 레이저 교정술 검사는 보험 처리가 되지 않 는데다 환자가 시술에 적합한지 알기 위해 실시하 는 검사이기 때문에 비용은 무료입니다. 안타깝게도 10% 정도의 환자들은 시술에 적합하지 않습니다. 검사는 약 한 시간 반 정도 소요됩니다. 그 후 의사와 상담을 진행해요. 대부분의 의사들이 영어를 구사하 지만 필요한 경우 통역 서비스를 제공합니다. 상담 중 환자에게 선택지를 제공하고, 환자들은 다른 날 예약을 잡거나 당일 수술을 진행할 수 있습니다. 수 술 후에는 영어 가능자를 환자에게 붙여 추후 결과 와 진료를 팔로업합니다. 숙박 기간을 연장해야 하 는 분들께는 근처 호텔에서 할인 프로모션도 제공하 고 있고, 무료 1박 숙박도 제공해 드립니다. 

C: Does a patient need to do anything before visiting?

C: 방문 전 환자가 해야 할 일이 있나요? 

M: If they are coming for laser corrective surgery, they shouldn’t wear any contact lenses for 4 to 7 days, if they are soft lenses, and 14 if they are hard. They should bring their glasses with them if they have them because it will assist with the examination. We also highly recommend coming by public transportation or have a friend or family member drive, even if they are not having surgery that day because in some cases, we dilate the pupil to make sure that there are no problems with the retina and that can make it difficult to drive.

M: 레이저 시력교정 수술의 경우 4일에서 7일 간 소프트 콘택트 렌즈 착용이 금지되며, 하드 렌즈는 14 일 간 착용할 수 없습니다. 검사에 도움이 되므로 안 경이 있는 경우 안경을 가져오셔야 합니다. 당일 수술을 받지 않으시더라도 대중교통을 이용하시거나 운전해 줄 수 있는 가족 또는 지인을 대동하시기를 권장합니다. 망막에 이상이 없는지 확인하기 위해 홍채를 확장시켜야 하는 경우 운전이 어렵기 때문입니다. 

C: What should a foreigner traveling from outside of Korea bring with them?

C: 다른 나라에서 온 외국인 환자의 경우 무엇을 준비해야 하나요? 

M: They need to bring their ID card or passport so we can register them in the system. If they have any previous examination results, they should bring those as well. For most of the surgeries, even the cataract surgeries, the patient can go back home the same day so if they are staying in a hotel they should bring what they need for that. In cases of patients needing to stay overnight, we provide everything from hospital gowns, slippers, to toothbrushes. They can bring their own food and store it on the floor in the fridge that is provided, but since we provide three meals a day that isn’t required. We also provide vegan and pork free meals if requested in advance.

M: 환자 등록을 위해 신분증 또는 여권을 가져오셔야 합니다. 이전 검사 결과가 있으시면 가져오셔야 합 니다. 백내장을 포함한 대부분의 수술은 수술 당일 귀가가 가능하므로 호텔에 투숙하시는 경우 숙박에 필요한 물품들을 챙기셔야 합니다. 입원이 필요한 경우 병원 가운, 슬리퍼, 칫솔 등 필요한 모든 것을 제공해 드립니다. 원하시는 음식을 가져오셔서 제공 되는 냉장고에 보관하셔도 됩니다. 하지만 세끼 식사 모두 병원 측에서 제공하니 반드시 음식을 준비하실 필요는 없어요. 미리 알려주신다면 비건 식사나 돼지 고기를 사용하지 않은 식사를 제공해 드립니다. 

C: What translation services are provided by the hospital?

C: 병원 측에서 어떤 통역 서비스를 제공하나요? 

M: I am the main point of contact for translation in the hospital. I provide services in English, Chinese, and Russian. As I said earlier, most of the doctors speak English fairly well and several nurses do as well. We have at least one English speaker on site every day. For other languages we can provide translation services if an appointment is booked in advance.

M: 제가 병원의 메인 통역사입니다. 영어, 중국어, 러시아어 통역이 가능하고요. 앞에서 말씀 드린 것처럼 대부분의 의사들과 몇몇 간호사들도 영어를 구사합니다. 매일 영어가 가능한 직원이 적어도 한 명 이상 근무하고 있어요. 다른 언어는 사전 예약을 해 주시면 통역 서비스를 제공하고 있습니다.

C: Do you provide any discounts for foreigners?

C: 외국인 할인 혜택이 있나요? 

M: Every month we have different discounts. We encourage anyone to visit our website to see the current discounts. Right now, we are offering a 100,000 KRW discount on all surgeries and eyedrops after surgeries. We also work with the Gwangan International Community Fair and will be providing discounts to people who visit us during the fair.
