Escape the Cold in the RainㅡMoCA Busan’s Rain Room
[전시 리뷰] 부산현대미술관 레인 룸
It’s getting cold and people are always asking
what to do in Busan during winter. The Museum of
Contemporary Art Busan (MoCA) in Eulsukdo is a great
place to spend a few hours. The current highlight,
Random International’s Rain Room, has been amazing
people worldwide since 2012 and will be showing in
Busan until January 27, 2020.
날이 추워지고 있다. 사람들은 언제나 겨울에 부산에서 무엇을 해야 할 지 묻는다. 을숙도에 있는 부산현대미술관(MoCA)은 추운 겨울에 시간을 보내기에 좋은 곳이다. 현재 주요 전시는 랜덤 인터내셔널의 레인 룸으로, 2012년부터 전세계에 놀라움을 선사했다. 부산에서는 2020년 1월 27 일까지 전시를 관람할 수 있다.
Random International has been examining the way that humans and nature interact through 《Out of Control》 exhibition. 《Out of Control》 couples Algorithmic Swarm Study / I and Rain Room. In Rain Room human presence stops rainfall using 3D tracking cameras. The rain is falling in a spooky, darkened room, but as you walk with your arm extended, the cameras sense your movement and stop the rain from falling above you. It’s quite a surreal feeling to be walking around in the rain, but not be getting wet (be warned that if you are too fast you WILL GET WET!).
랜덤 인터내셔널은 《랜덤 인터네셔널: 아웃 오브 컨트롤 (Out of Control)》 전시를 통해 인간과 자연이 교감하는 방식을 탐구해 오고 있다. 《랜덤 인터내셔널: 아웃 오브 컨트롤》에는 Algorithmic Swarm Study / I 과 레인 룸 두 작품이 출품되었다. 레인 룸에서는 사람을 감지하면 3D 추적 카메라로 비를 멈춘다. 어둡고 으스스한 방 안에는 비가 내리고 있는데, 팔을 펼치고 걸어가면 카메라가 움직임 을 감지해 비를 멈추는 것이다. 빗속을 걸으면서도 비에 젖지 않는 것은 상당히 비현실적인 경험이다. 하지만 너무 빨리 움직이면 젖으니 주의할 것!
Entry into Rain Room happens every ten minutes and the number of people in each intake is also limited, so try to get there early or book online. There are also some rules prohibiting flash photography and selfie sticks inside the room but there are signs and staff who will explain everything upon entry.
레인 룸 입장은 10분에 한 번씩 가능하고 한 번에 입장 가능한 인원수도 제한되어 있으니 빨리 도착하거나 미리 온라인 예매를 하는 것이 좋다. 작품 내 플래시 금지, 셀카봉 금지 등 몇 가지 금지 규칙이 있는데, 입장할 때 표지판에 도 안내되어 있고 스태프들도 설명해준다.
While you wait, you can check out the rest of MoCA, including Radom International’s Algorithmic Swarm Study / I. It’s a video installation that features over a million digital objects moving together in the harmony of a flock. These ‘flocks’ are projected onto huge screens with atmospheric music and colours enhancing the dreamlike experience. The feeling of watching a digital swarm of birds or bugs is a little disconcerting, but made me miss the last time that I saw the real thing.
기다리는 동안 랜덤 인터내셔널의 Algorithmic Swarm Study / I 을 포함한 부산현대미술관의 다른 전시를 돌아볼 수 있다. Algorithmic Swarm Study / I은 백만 개가 넘는 디지털 오브젝트가 군집을 이루어 조화롭게 움직이는 비디오 설치 작품이다. 분위기 있는 음악, 배경과 함께 커다란 스크린에 비친 이 ‘군집’은 꿈 같은 경험을 선사한다. 새떼나 벌레떼처럼 보이는 디지털 군집은 조금 당혹스럽기는 해도 마지막으로 실제 새나 벌레떼를 보았던 시절을 떠올리게 해 주었다.
MocA is on Eulsukdo; an island in the Nakdong river, and is accessible by bus or a short taxi from Hadan station. MoCA is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 6pm (9pm Friday and Saturday nights – and closed on public holidays). There is parking onsite and a café on the first floor, as well as a library and other exhibitions inside the museum. 낙동강 유역의 을숙도에 위치한 부산현대미술관은 버스를 타거나 하단에서 택시를 타면 금방 도착한다. 관람 시간은 화요일부터 일요일 오전 10시부터 저녁 6시까지다. 금요일, 토요일은 밤 9시까지 관람 가능하며, 공휴일은 휴관한다. 1층에는 주차장과 카페가 있고, 박물관 안에는 도서관과 다른 전시를 둘러볼 수 있다. 웹사이트(www.busan. go.kr/moca)에서 국문, 영문으로 더 많은 정보를 얻을 수 있다.
