Sébastien Simon (S): What are the origins of your podcast? When did you start it, and why?

Mike Payne-Wheeler (MPW): I’m the host of Inside Out Busan and its weekend edition, Cine Concerto, on BeFM. Tim started off as my weekly guest every Sunday. One day, I realized that our conversation sounded a lot like the podcasts that my wife listens to! I thought Tim and I have a good dynamic, so I approached him about doing a podcast together. It could be like what we do on the radio, but on our own terms. We would be a little freer to say things that we might not be allowed to say on public radio, or just to talk more in-depth about similar topics. As for the name, Tim chose it.

Now It’s Dark라는 프로그램명은 팀의 아이 디어였습니다.

Tim Paugh (TP): I was very interested in Mike’s proposition, in the idea of having an outlet for my thoughts on cinema, and in sharing them with him. When we started talking about possible topics, I thought that it would be good to start with, and to give our own take on, Twin Peaks - The Return. Because I noticed a lot of people on YouTube making content about this and getting a lot of views. One day I mentioned this line from Blue Velvet: “Now it’s dark.” Dennis Hopper’s character says it every time he goes into this dark place. And in one sense, it conveys the moment when the lights go down in a movie theater as you’re about to watch and experience cinema… Yet it also reflects another idea of darkness which we like to address with these discussions on film, such as social decline, rise of violence, or sociological and political upheavals. Being inspired by YouTube also gave us the idea that, with each podcast, Mike would edit the audio and I would take excerpts and turn them into a visual essay so we might reach a YouTube audience. Because visual content have a lot more editing involved, the dissertations are a lot tighter, and the conversational quality goes away in favor of getting straight to the essence of our ideas.

“이제 어둠이야(Now it’s dark.)”

S: How regularly do you release new episodes? Do you have an editorial line?

MPW: We started two years ago: so far we have 13 episodes out, and 7 YouTube videos. There’s no real rhythm or pattern, it’s whenever we can and want to, whenever we feel really inspired, or whenever there’s something really topical and resonant. We approach our episodes from different angles, too. We would do straight analysis of Twin Peaks or Vertigo, and then our Joker podcast would be made more in defense of it. We also compared Parasite and Us together.

TP: A lot of it is about analyzing movies from tour present moment. Exploring the themes of alienation and loneliness in Taxi Driver was interesting because it’s such a big problem today. Or are the influences of technology, urbanization and multiculturalism that you see in Blade Runner still relevant today? Or relationship and trauma in Midsommar: these seem to be very pressing concerns now. There seems to be a larger theme this year, the idea of an underclass rebelling against the elites - which Us, Parasite and Joker are pretty good examples of.

MPW: Does the reception of Joker reflect on how Taxi Driver would have been received if it was released today? What does it say about film criticism today?

TP: The Joker episode is where we really got angry because of how elitist some critics got. My sense of the relationship between corporate media and online media, like YouTube and podcasts, is that the former really despises, and until recently even feared, the latter. Because we’re not bound by advertisers, time constraints, editors, subscriptions, music breaks or clickbait - we just try to put out ideas. But the only way to really build an audience in today’s environment is by being intellectually consistent and by treating the audience with respect. People have a real sense of when you’re being honest. Our Twin Peaks video blew up when we released it because it was right when everybody was talking about it: the first video on our channel, with little to no followers then, and it got 100,000 views and a lot of great feedback. Sometimes people would correct us, but there is this real respect. The same happened with our Midsommar video recently, it’s now passed 70,000 views! It was so inspiring and amazing and it gives me so much hope, despite the bad rap that people online get.

S: You’ve also done episodes on the Busan International Film Festival. Do these Busan specific episodes get the same kind of feedback?

TP: Busan informs our work in a lot of ways; it really is a movie city. When I watched Vertigo for the first time on a big screen, at the Busan Cinema Center, I remember thinking that we have to talk about this on our podcast. How you see a movie, especially when you see it in its proper format, makes you feel like you’ve really experienced it, and therefore that you’re probably better suited to talk about it then. For the past three years, we’ve also done episodes on the Busan International Film Festival, with rundowns of our favorite films and moments, or just a general review of the festival.

MPW: The BIFF episodes are fun, we like to do them. Maybe those around the world that are really interested in film festivals might listen to these episodes, or maybe they’re more tailored to our local listeners. BIFF is such a major film festival, yet I’m not really sure how much coverage it actually gets around the world as opposed to Cannes, Venice or Toronto. So it’s kind of cool to give it some.

TP: Sometimes I have to remind myself: “Wow, we live right next to Asia’s largest film festival!” And it is amazing to me to think that, if I was living back in Canada or if Mike was living back in the States, that festival is not something that we would be that aware of. We would know about it, but we wouldn’t be as attuned to it.

S: What are your upcoming plans?

TP: Generally growing our channels: we’re both aching to produce more podcast and YouTube content! Certain ideas will come to us and will evolve through time to the point where it feels necessary to talk about them. For instance, we talked about doing an episode on Blue Velvet, because of our name and because we’ll be happy to go back to David Lynch. There’s a great and inquisitive audience for that. The Shining is another one.

MPW: The Shining would be an interesting challenge because so much has been said about it. What can we really add to the conversation that isn’t just a retread? How can we talk about this film in a new way?

TP: We’d also like to get to the point where we start bringing on guests who could contribute to either a whole episode or to a particular part of it. Several people have already signaled their interest. It would be great to add some other voices.
