Trip to Geoje Island

Trip to Geoje Island with Ayesha

Geojedo or Geoje Island, situated in the southern part of Korea, is the second largest island in the country after Jeju Island. On the island is a city called Geoje. It is known as the “Blue City”, probably because it is in the middle of an island surrounded by the blue sea. There was a time when travelers from Busan had to travel far by road or use a ferry to get to the island, but, luckily, the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link was opened in December 2010; it provides a shorter, more direct route from Busan.

During “Seollal” (Lunar New Year) last year, my friends and I went on a two-day trip to Geoje Island. We took a bus from Dongnae Intercity Bus Terminal. There is no need to book in advance, because these buses are available almost every hour. We actually visited the house of friends there. Sadly they have left Korea and moved back to Singapore. I am glad that we had the trip together before they left.

Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp

Our friend had a car, so getting around was not a big deal for us. The prisoner-of war(POW) camp was the first place we went to. Geoje Island had the biggest POW camp during the Korean War. The camp has now been restored as a historical relic site. In the camp they tried to create a vision of what had happened there with little sculptures lighting, and paintings. Everything was so beautifully made and arranged, that we felt almost as if we had traveled back in time to those days when the camp was in operation. They even had some war relics such as tanks, planes, etc.

Ocean view from Windy hill

Next, we went to Hakdong Mongdol Beach and then to Windy Hill. “Mongdol” is Korean for "pebble" and, as we might have expected, the beach was covered in pebbles. Similarly, Windy Hill was really windy and almost made us feel like we were going to fly away with the wind! The hill was covered in grass and overlooked the sea. A growing number visitors started coming to this place after it was used as a filming site for popular Korean dramas such as "Eve's Garden" (2003, SBS) and "Merry-Go-Round" (2004, MBC). Both of these places were so peaceful, full of natural beauty, and had such cool breezes—great places to enjoy with your loved ones!

Oedo Island 외도

The best was saved for last: Oedo Island. We went there on the final day of our trip. It is 4 kilometers away from Geoje Island and can be reached by taking a ferry ride that lasts almost an hour. It is a good idea to go there in the morning at around 11 AM to enable you to get back by around 3 PM. Trust me, it is beautiful in the daylight.

The whole island is a botanical garden, called Oedo-Botania, and is located in the Hallyeo Maritime National Park and has beautiful views of the crystal blue South Sea. Lee Chang-ho first came to this island in 1969 to escape from the wind and waves when he was fishing. He and his wife, Choi Ho-sook, created a breathtaking garden using all their care over a period of 30 years. Oedo-Botania is the most beautiful garden I have ever seen, and I want it to stay that way forever. This garden has plenty of flower species that have been planted in an endless sea of green. The most amazing experience was crossing the sea in a boat. Taking in the immeasurable beauty of the sea while the sun shines down on you, one can once again come to the realization that life is truly beautiful! The boat driver was very generous; he allowed us to go onto the deck to watch the sea from up close. Just a suggestion here, visit with your partner and hold each other’s hands while standing on the deck; it is not only safe and romantic, but it is also adds to the beauty of the experience when you have someone to share it with. The place is a little crowded, and the boat comes at certain intervals only, so make sure to keep track of the time and avoid spending too much time taking pictures.

If you need more information, you can always check the Korea Tourism Organization's official website (english. visitkorea.or.kr). Also, when you go to a new city in Korea, you will often see small tourist information centers near bus stations or train stations. Just pick a map from there and off you go. Also, if you ask any person in that office for directions, they would surely help you out.
