S: Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers.
M: Hi, my name is Martin Beyer, I have been the director of Alliance Française Busan (AFB) since February 2019. I’m actually German, but I have been living and working in Paris in the field of non-profit associations for 30 years. I’m particularly interested in the many ways that culture and education can coalesce and contribute to the flourishing of the youth. I believe that a cultural approach is a better and highly-motivating factor when learning a foreign language - similarly to how it was for me when I learned French - especially in terms of cultural differences and diversity.

M: 안녕하세요, 마르땅 바이야입니다. 2019년 2월에 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈 원장으로 부임하게 되었습니다. 전 사실 독일인이지만, 30년간 파리의 비영리 단체에서 일했어요. 청년들을 지원하는 문화와 교육사업에 대해 관심이 많죠. 제가 처음 프랑스어를 배웠을 때처럼, 외국어를 배울 때 문화적 접근이 더 동기부여가 크다고 봐요. 특히 문화적 차이와 다양성의 측면에서 그렇죠.
S: What are the main activities and goals of the Alliance Française Busan?
M: The AF of Busan was founded in 1980. Just like the 830 Alliance Française centers worldwide, we carry on three main missions: promotion of French language, promotion of French/Francophone culture, promotion of the values of Francophonie (peace, democracy, tolerance and respect of others, defense of environment and sustainability). We are part of the linguistic and cultural network of the French Embassy in Korea, with which we have an agreement of cooperation. We organize French classes and collaborate with the Institut Français / French Embassy for the official language exams. We have a French library, and help coordinating, facilitating or promoting various cultural exchanges in Busan - lectures, concerts, exhibitions, etc. Our center is located just a two-minute walk out of Nakmin station exit 3, in Dongnae.
S: 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈의 주요 활동과 목표는 무엇인가요?
M: 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈는 1980년에 개원했어요. 전 세계 830여 개의 알리앙스 프랑세즈처럼 프랑스어 홍보, 프랑스/프랑스문화권 문화의 진흥, 프랑스 문화권의 가치 증진(평화, 민주주의, 타인에 대한 관용과 존중, 환경 보호와 지속가능성)이라는 세 가지 주요 미션 아래 주한 프랑스 대사관의 언어적, 문화적 네트워크의 일환으로서 협력하고 있죠. 프랑스 문화원과 대사관과 협력하여 공식 프랑스어 시험을 위해 프랑스어 강좌도 제공하고 있어요. 도서관도 있고, 부산의 강의, 콘서트, 전시회 등 다양한 문화 교류를 조율, 촉진, 장려하고 있어요. 부산 지하철 4호선 낙민역 3번 출구에서 도보 2분 거리에 위치하고 있으니 많은 방문 부탁 드립니다.
S: What are your projects for the coming months?
M: Outside of tending to the daily classes, we are currently at work on two upcoming projects. The first one is called ‘Les Rendez-vous de Busan’, for which we are liaising a dozen artistic activities between October and early December. For example, we coordinated with the UKO Orchestra and the Mongolian Consulate in Busan for a one-date, world music concert on October 23rd at the Haeundae Cultural Center, as part of French Week. The ensemble was called ‘Mathias Duplessy and the Violins of the World’: it’s a quartet of musicians living in Paris but coming from all around the world: China, France, Tunisia and Mongolia. We also collaborate regularly with the Museum Goeun of Photography, as well as with the Busan Cultural Center, when it comes to French or Francophone artistic events: the performance of the famous French ‘Ballet Preljocaj’ on November 6 at BCC was an exceptional artistic highlight. On November 29th, from 6pm till 8pm, the 2019 'Rendez-vous de Busan’ will come to a close with the opening of Christine Capitant's painting exhibition at the Goeun Photography Museum, combined with a degustation of Beaujolais Nouveau wine - an event offered by the Honorary Consulate of France in Busan in association with the Alliance Française Busan.
Another big project will be the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Alliance Française Busan in 2020. We’re still at work on the details, but I wish to highlight the daily, patient and persevering work of the language teachers (ours, and from Busan universities’ various French Literature departments), whom I think remain too often in the shadow.
S: 앞으로 몇 달 동안 어떤 프로젝트를 진행하시나요?
M: 저희는 매일 수업하는 것 외에 두 가지의 프로젝트를 진행하고 있어요. 하나는 ‘Les Rendez-vous de Busan 랑데부 드 부산’이라는 프로젝트인데요, 10월에서 12월 동안 12개의 예술 활동과 공동으로 행사를 개최하는 거예요. 예를 들어, UKO(United Korean Orchestra)와 주부산몽골영사관과 함께 프랑스 주간의 일환으로 10월 23일 해운대 문화 센터에서 세계음악콘서트를 개최해요. 참여하는 앙상블은 ‘Mathias Duplessy and the Violins of the World 마티아스 뒤플레시와 세계의 바이올린’으로, 중국, 프랑스, 튀니지, 몽골 음악가로 구성된 파리에서 활동하는 앙상블이죠. 11월 29일 6시부터 8시까지는 고은사진미술관에서 Christine Capitant의 개인전 '랑데부 드 부산(Rendez-Vous de Busan)'의 오프닝이 알리앙스 프랑세즈 부산과 협업하여 부산명예영사로부터 제공받은 보졸레 누보의 테이스팅과 같이 개최될 예정이다. 또 다른 큰 행사는 2020년 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈 설립 40주년 기념 행사가 있어요. 세부 사항들은 조율 중이지만, 알리앙스 프랑세즈와 부산 지역 대학들의 불문학과 강사들의 끈기 있는 일들에 대해 강조하고 싶어요.
S: As a newcomer to Busan, how have you enjoyed our city so far?
M: Oh là là! Busan is a great place to be! For my first experience living in Asia, I’m very glad that it’s here! This city is very lively and stimulating, and especially fascinating with its contrast between sea, mountain and urban areas.
S: 2019년 2월 부산에 처음 오셨다고 했는데, 마르땅 원장님이 바라보는 부산은 어떤가요?
M: 이야! 부산은 정말 좋은 곳이에요! 아시아에 사는 것 자체가 처음인데, 그 곳이 부산이라서 매우 기뻐요. 이 도시는 매우 생기 넘치고, 활발하고, 특히 바다와 산과 도시 지역이 극명해서 매우 흥미로워요.
