Meet Diversity of Cultures at ASEAN Culture House

Global city ‘Busan’ hosts a mega event “the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit” this coming November. The Republic of Korea and 10 ASEAN countries will attend the summit, and this is the second time that Busan hosts the summit after 2014.

2019 Easy Access Cambodia

Hidden from the crowds of Busan, just north of the Jangsan subway stop, the ASEAN Culture House (ACH) is a venue that plays a vital role in sharing culture between South Korea and the ten members of the ASEAN intergovernmental organization. ACH runs a special program ‘Easy Access ASEAN’ that focusing on one ASEAN country every month. I had the chance to go there to take part in one of their interesting events called “Cambodia Culture Day”, held in April. I had the pleasure to meet the director of ACH and also the person in charge of the events and had a very nice talk with them.

Performance in ACH

Opened in 2017, the ACH was a result of the 2014 ASEANROK Commemorative Summit in Busan. It serves as a way to enhance awareness and friendship. Its stated objectives are to provide Koreans with accurate information about ASEAN, deepen the mutual understanding between Koreans and ASEAN, initiate cultural and academic networks between Korea and ASEAN, serve as a cultural and community center for ASEAN missions in Korea, and promote ASEAN-related diplomatic cooperation in central and local governments.

Currently operated by the Korea Foundation (KF), the ACH is a total of 4 stories and 2 underground levels. It contains permanent exhibitions featuring important cultural artifacts from the member countries, special exhibition galleries for traveling exhibits, a Cultural Experience hall, the ASEAN Information Center, and several seminar rooms. Seminar, lecture, practice rooms and the ACH hall are provided free of charge for Korean and foreign residents for holding events related to cultural and academic exchange between Korea and ASEAN countries.

Throughout the year, The ACH hosts exhibitions and events.
