[Movie Review] Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite

The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Korean cinema: there couldn’t have been a more fitting time for a Korean film to finally win the Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or! Unanimously revered by movie critics, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite has also proven an irresistible theatrical success and is even Korea’s official entry to the 2020 Academy Awards’ International Feature Film award, all but cementing its position in cinema history as a career-defining box-office hit for its director, as well as a cultural landmark. Firmly rooted in Korea’s education-fixated zeitgeist, the film’s laserfocused satire takes aim at the culture of excessive private tutoring.

Two siblings pose as faux model students and, with their parents, orchestrate an elaborate scam on a richer-than-rich family to try and elevate theirs from its inherent poorness and out of its rotten semi-basement apartment. Most of the action takes place inside the rich family’s improbable fortress-like house, turning the film into an increasingly claustrophobic, yet playful exercise in meticulous and fetishistic mise-en-scène.

Featured in all his films, Bong Joon-ho’s obsession with class struggle reaches new depths here as both the decor and the characters alike reveal always deeper and unforeseeable layers of complexity and ruthlessness, culminating in several masterful setpieces and crescendos. Defying genre expectations, Parasite balances several sharp tonal shifts and even conjures some of the director’s previous films, with notable echoes of The Host (the citizens taking refuge in a gymnasium) and Mother (the poignant final moments between the son and the matriarch).

Following the Palme d’Or, the film’s and its director’s auras have shined towards Busan, too. Late August, Busan International Short Film Festival’s senior programmer Lee Sang-hoon flew to Brazil to accompany and present a retrospective of Bong Joonho’s short films at the 30th São Paulo International Short Film Festival. Now located in Busan, the Korean Academy of Film Arts provided Bong’s student films from his time at the school. Benefitting from an excellent translation by Busan Asian Film School professor and movie critic Darcy Paquet (a work which earned him much viral praise and abundant press coverage), Parasite was screened multiple times in movie theaters with English subtitles, allowing foreigners in Korea to be able to fully enjoy the film and partake in its success. We have gathered impressions and opinions on the film from a few Busan residents: What is your impression of Parasite?

What is your impression of Parasite?

A surprising aspect that I appreciated the most was how nostalgic it made me for everyday life in Korea. At the start of the movie, I loved the scenes shot from the vantage point of the family’s basement apartment: the streets outside the window are so quintessentially Korean and depicting familiar sights, signs, and characters resembling those that I see daily while living here. I love the humbleness of that perspective and imagining these kinds of interactions going on behind closed doors in corners of privacy within the bustling metropolis. I laughed at their pirated Wi-Fi because I’ve found myself appreciating small things like this all the time since living in Busan.

What I found amusing was that the main characters didn’t seem to actually suffer from being poor. They reminded me of some of Victor Hugo’s characters, especially the Thénardiers from Les Misérables.

Every Song Kang-ho movie is about an average man who seeks to better his life with what first seems like a movie cliche (getting the girl, killing the monster, etc.) but who fails miserably at his intended goal and instead learns something about himself and how to live with a new normal. Parasite pushes this theme to its logical extreme. While fighting societal inequality, Song’s family fails to find a target that is actually deserving of their many crimes. As such, it causes the audience to constantly wonder who they're rooting for. It’s an emotional journey by an amazing filmmaking duo. Song Kang-ho is the world's greatest actor, and Bong Joon-ho possibly its greatest director.

There is a lot of economic anxiety and anger in the world these days, and I think that was reflected in the film. It was entertaining to watch the family’s plan unfold and I think director Bong Joon-ho skillfully shifted from comedy to drama over the course of the film.

Belly-laughter comedy and true horror violence come together for a satisfying crusade against classism. The result is the best movie of 2019.

It's fun to watch how normalized disingenuity has become in the absurd charade of Parasite. We can both empathise and side with the anti-heroes yet sit smugly at a safe and self-satisfied distance from the desperation and dysfunction the character exhibit. We then become more like the 'host'; privileged in ignorance, secretive of our desperation, while sharing with the other only a kick out of toying with people and contemptuousness. And being largely entertained if not moved by this charade that both destroys and drives us into hiding, souring the sweet life from within.

It's  If you ask three different people, you'll get three different responses to who or what the title refers to. And in a way, they're all right. The one scene that sticks with me is that biblical flood, dredging up and exposing the rot and systemic inequality that set up and perpetuated this cycle of disregard and mutual parasitism to begin with. Harm becomes both cause and symptom. In the end, everyone suffers.
