Busan’s Tabletop Gaming Culture

In 2009, two Busan expats, Josh Lehr and Alex Stroda, bemoaned their lack of options for entertainment besides going out for a drink...again. It’s not that they didn’t enjoy going out, it was that drinking was the default mode of socializing in the expat community. Wanting to find like-minded people to play board games, they put the word out on BusanWeb (the precursor of Koreabridge) and found me and a few others. We formed a group which met once or twice a week to game. Thanks to the efforts of this group and other gamers I’ve come to know over the years, Busan has quite the active tabletop gaming scene. There are several reasons why tabletop gaming has become so popular in Busan these days, and if you’re looking to get in on the fun, there are several options open to tabletop gamers, both face-to-face and online.

Why Tabletop Gaming in Busan?

It goes without saying that the point of playing games is to have fun. Games that we found fun as children, from the earliest kids games like Candy Land to family favorites such as Monopoly or Uno, may not necessarily hold your interest anymore. What you may not know is that in the past twenty years or so, there has been a quiet revolution in tabletop gaming, often eclipsed by all the attention garnered by computer games. Board games and card games are not exactly big business, but there are many companies out there producing a wide variety of games and turning profits. In addition to the classic family games many of us grew up on, there are many styles of game to choose from today. With a wide variety of styles, it isn’t hard to find games that you will enjoy. You’re also going to find like-minded players right here in Busan. Whatever types of games you enjoy, someone in the Busan gaming scene is bound to share your interests.

Games are social affairs, which is another reason tabletop gaming is so popular these days. Playing with other people helps you to make new friends – great if your situation is like mine was ten years ago: you’re new in town and don’t have many acquaintances yet. I’m still friends with most of the people I met in my first gaming group, and I’m always meeting new faces. If you’re here with family, tabletop gaming is a great way to spend time with your family and others’ families. In addition, the game sessions aren’t limited to only expats. If you’re looking to make new Korean friends, tabletop games can help. The social aspect of the gaming group makes the games more fun. And for introverts, a game night usually features a small, familiar group of people who are willing to give you that space you need when you need it.

The third reason why you might want to choose tabletop gaming is that it mostly happens offline. Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time staring at screens every day. Tabletop gaming may help you break your cycle of screen-addiction.

Finally, going out for drinks is fun, but can get tedious. As mentioned above, that pushed Josh and Alex to form the first game group that I took part in. As a 30-something husband and father, I wasn’t interested in the pub-crawl scene in my new city, but gaming was a way to get out of the house and unwind. Tabletop gaming is usually cheaper than drinking, unless you’re a game collector or get addicted toboard game crowdfunding efforts. An added benefit for those of us with families is that gaming doesn’t leave you with a hangover on Sunday mornings, making it easier to spend time with the family on your day off. Tabletop gaming doesn’t mean you can’t drink, of course. You could go out for the evening, play games for an hour or two, then head out to the bars afterwards. Or you could game at a bar. Some board game cafes allow BYOB, or at least won’t say anything as long as you keep it under control.

A Gamer’s Guide to Busan
If you’re a gamer who’s been out of the loop since you came to Busan or the above reasons have swayed you to try some tabletop gaming, this section is for you. There are several options for the local tabletop gamer to get your game on: board game cafes, game meetups, and online game sessions, and all are detailed below.

If you haven’t discovered them already, board game cafes are a thing in Korea. They were quite popular when I arrived in Busan, seemed to die out a few years later, but now they’re back! The dedicated board game cafe has a wide selection of games, and you’re welcome to bring your own as well. Tables are large, the lighting is good, and the background music isn’t loud if there is any BGM at all. Board game cafes near universities like Kyungsung University (KSU) or Pusan National University (PNU) do get crowded with college students on the weekends, which can make them pretty noisy, especially when the piko-piko hammer punishment games are played. In general, the atmosphere is very conducive to gaming, as you would expect.

The dedicated board game cafes charge an hourly fee, although it isn’t expensive and usually comes with a free drink, typically tea. Some drinks, including soft drinks, juice, or sometimes alcohol, require paying extra. In addition to the hourly fee, another drawback is that not every board game cafe has the English language versions of every game. Many games don’t require much language and the rules can be found online, so this isn’t a huge problem for the expat gamer who doesn’t speak Korean well. The biggest advantage of the board game cafes is the convenience. They have everything you need and an excellent environment for gaming. In addition to the dedicated board game cafes, there are some coffee shops and bars that keep board games on hand.

Your second option is to join a dedicated gaming group. There are several in Busan, and some focus on board and card games while others are focused on tabletop role-playing. Both types have Facebook groups to organize. One big advantage of these meetups is that they are regularly scheduled events and you know in advance if others are coming. The down side is that the time or the location may be inconvenient.

The “Busan Board Gamers” Facebook group has, at the time of writing, about 410 members. This group was formed by Pat Sanders and Bill Sharp, participants of my first gaming group, after our old group disbanded. Pat told me, “I remember wanting to form a regular-meeting gaming day/night like I did back home. Bill had the idea to make it a club with a Facebook page and a regular location at Fully Booked. After a few years, HQ was willing to be our host. Since then, we’ve outgrown being a single once-a-week meeting group. The Busan Board Gamers page caters to gamers around the city, and there are regular meetups in Gwangan, Seomyeon, PNU, Hadan, and Hwamyeong.” Meetups take place both on weekend and weeknights. You can use the group to organize impromptu one-off meetups or to gauge interest in new meetups at times or locations that are convenient for you. Members also often offer games for sale in this group.

✔ Current Meetups include: Sunday afternoons at HQ bar on Gwangalli Beach, Saturday afternoon Language Exchange at Cozy English in Hwamyeong, Wednesday nights at Bricks Coffee in Seomyeon, and PNU Friday Night Meetup at IndieMove Cafe near Jangjeon station.

If tabletop RPGs are more your style, there is also the “D&D in Busan” Facebook group, which at the time of writing has 135 members. It lists four currently active face-to-face campaigns. The current campaigns listed are located in Seomyeon (Classic D&D run by myself), KSU (5E D&D run by Shard Aries Obsidia), Haeundae (5E D&D run by Dean Flemming), and Shinpyeong (5E D&D run by Matt Furman), all played on weekends. Three more groups play online (5E D&D run by Dean Flemming, The Rad Hack run by Jeremy Hart, and a homebrew game run by Jeff Lane). The Facebook group makes a good sounding board for organizing new groups or gauging interest in any particular RPGs you want to play. Some previous groups haven’t used the FB group to organize, or used it to organize but then formed a dedicated Facebook group for that campaign, so there may be more options available. While all the active campaigns listed are playing Dungeons & Dragons, people have run other RPGs, and there are often inquiries about other systems.

It may sound strange to some, but these days, playing tabletop games over the internet is easy and convenient. As mentioned above, some RPG campaigns are run online, and there are other short-term or impromptu games from time to time. These use a combination of video conferencing and online virtual tabletops to connect players. Despite occasional technical issues, the games usually run smoothly. The voice/video conference allows players to talk as if in the same room, and not everyone needs to be in Busan. The online campaigns have regular players who live as far away as Kentucky, Scotland, and Vietnam.

Over the past ten years, the gaming community in Busan has developed and grown constantly. No matter what type of games you like to play, there are other people in town who will be happy to play these games with you. They make great opportunities to socialize, and are a fun alternative if you’re stuck in a rut for entertainment options. Social media allows local gamers to connect with ease. Even if you’re not on social media, once you find a game group it’s easy to keep in the loop. If none of the established game meetups work for your schedule or location, it’s easy to find an online game or to form a new meetup at the time and location of your choosing. Busan is truly a great place to live if you’re a gamer.
