From Russia for Love: Olga’s Story
사랑을 찾아서: 러시아인 올가의 이야기
There is a quiet community here in Busan that we don’t hear much about, even though they are our neighbors, the Russians! Olga Tzym is a striking example that one would imagine more likely on the cover of Vogue magazine rather than at a desk, designing helicopters but that is what she was doing in Vladivostok. Then she decided it was time for a life change. After travelling to China several times, she came to Busan three years ago with the hope of learning Korean cuisine with the intention of setting up a Korean restaurant back home. During this time, she met a Korean gentleman who would eventually change her plans and her life.
After returning to Russia, she came back to Busan with her 8-year-old daughter Dasha and finally settled with her new partner in Haeundae. Dasha enrolled in an international kindergarten but she could only speak Russian in the bilingual Korean-English environment. She pick up her new languages very quickly and now plays with her Korean friends in Korean. Olga is studying Korean and goes to the Haeundae Cultural Center in centum city every Wednesday for lessons. But at home the family speaks English and Olga speaks Russian with her daughter.
부산에는 우리 가까이 있는데도 잘 알려지지 않은 조용한 외국인 커뮤니티가 있다. 바로 러시아 공동체다! 올가(Olga Tzym)는 블라디보스토크에서 헬리콥터를 설계하는 사무직 일을 했었지만, 보그 매거진 표지에 더 어울릴 거 같은 사람이다. 올가는 삶에 변화를 줘야겠다고 결심했다. 몇 차례 중국 여행을 다녀온 올가는 러시아에 한국 식당을 차리기 위해 한국 요리를 배우고자 3년 전 부산을 찾았다. 올가는 이 시기에 자신의 계획과 삶을 바꿔놓은 한국 남자 한 명을 만나게 된다.
러시아로 돌아갔던 올가는 8살 난 딸 다샤와 함께 다시 부산으로 돌아와 새로운 배우자와 함께 해운대에 정착했다. 다샤는 한국어와 영어를 사용하는 국제 유치원에 등록했을 당시만해도 러시아어밖에 할 줄 몰랐다. 한국어를 매우 빨리 배운 다샤는 이제 한국어로 한국인 친구들과 놀 수 있다. 올가는 매주 수요일 센텀시티 해운대문화원에서 한국어 수업을 듣는다. 하지만 집에서는 영어를 쓰고, 올가와 다샤는 러시아어로 대화한다.
Olga misses her family but the flight home is less than two hours. She loves her life in Busan, the beach, the sea and the people. She finds the cultural differences not so big between her home and Korean culture especially with the emphasis on family, parents and children. The fact that there are so many Christians here who share her values makes her feel more at home. Olga is unaware of any Russian Orthodox Church in Busan so most of the Russian community go to Catholic Church for religious celebrations. The Antioch International Ministry (aimbusan.org) in Suyeong also caters to the Russian community as well as 24 other nationalities. She says the culture in the East of Russia is very different from the West of Russia. East Asian cultures have greatly influenced life in Vladivostok so the transition to Korea was very smooth for her.
Olga is fond of Korean food and like spicy dishes. She takes Korean cooking lessons from friends and continues to expand her Korean culinary skills. Her partner enjoys Russian cuisine and especially the soups and potatoes dishes.
Olga has a few Russian friends here but she doesn't know if there is a Russian social group or social media connection. She hears Russian in the street but is unaware of any Russian or Korean government initiatives to bring her community together. But, in June the community will be growing by at least one as Dasha will be having a little sister. In spite of feeling very at home in Busan, Olga still feels very Russian and hasn’t really considered taking Korean nationality. She is putting her emphasis on learning the language and will see later what options are open to her. For the time being Olga and Dasha are very happy just to be in Busan.
러시아에 있는 가족이 그립지만, 부산에서 고향까지는 비행기로 채 두 시간도 걸리지 않는다. 올가는 바다와 여러 좋은 사람들과 함께 하는 부산 생활을 사랑한다. 고향과 한국 모두 가족, 부모와 자녀 관계에 집중하는 문화를 갖고 있어 문화적 차이도 크지 않다. 같은 신념을 공유하는 기독교인이 많다는 사실도 올가가 이곳에서 편안함을 느끼는 이유 중 하나다. 부산에는 러시아 정교회가 없는 것으로 알고 있다. 그래서 대부분의 러시아인들은 종교 활동을 위해 가톨릭 교회로 간다. 수영구에 있는 안티오크 국제회(The Antioch International Ministry, aimbusan.org)에는 러시아 공동체 외에도 24개국 커뮤니티들이 있다. 올가는 러시아 동부와 서부의 문화는 무척 다르다고 한다. 동아시아 문화는 블라디보스토크에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤고, 덕분에 올가는 한국 생활에 쉽게 적응할 수 있었다.
한식을 좋아하는 올가는 그 중에서도 매운 음식을 좋아한다. 친구들에게서 한국 요리 수업을 들으며 현재도 한식요리 실력을 늘려나가고 있다. 배우자 역시 러시아 음식을 좋아한다. 특히 수프와 감자 요리를 좋아한다.
올가는 부산에 러시아 친구들은 꽤 있지만, 러시아인들이 함께 어울릴 수 있는 단체나 소셜미디어는 잘 모른다. 길거리에서 러시아인들을 가끔 만나지만, 이 러시아인들을 통합할 수 있는 러시아나 한국 정부 차원의 커뮤니티에 대해서는 잘 모른다. 그래도 6월이면 부산 내 러시아 공동체에는 적어도 한 명이 추가로 들어올 예정이다. 다샤의 여동생이 태어날 것이기 때문이다! 부산 생활이 편안하긴 하지만 올가는 아직 한국 국적을 얻을 계획은 없다. 먼저 한국어 공부를 열심히 하고 난 후에 생각해볼 예정이다. 현재 올가와 다샤는 부산에서 아주 행복한 생활을 하고 있다.
