An Interview with Jeff Lebow, a founder of Koreabridge

Jeff Lebow is one of the most famous and well known expats in Busan. He started Pusanweb (www.pusanweb.com), which later became the Koreabridge website (www.koreabridge.net) that we've come to love and depend on. Moreover, he also began Busan's first expat magazine, The Expatriate. I had the chance to interview him.

M : Michael(마이클) / J : Jeff(제프)

M: When and why did you move to Busan?

J: I had lived in Thailand for a year in the early 1990s. I enjoyed living in Asia and teaching English, so after returning to the States to get my Master’s Degree, I decided to head back to Asia. I thought Korea would be an interesting next chapter, so after seeing a tempting job offer in Busan, I arrived here in the summer of 1995 with plans to stay for one year.

M: You've been in Busan quite a long time. What was Busan like back in the mid-1990s?

J: The coffee was a lot weaker and eating ‘foreign food’ meant going to Pizza Hut. Busan has become a much more international city as far as food, culture, and infrastructure. Back then, you could see the changes coming, but day-today life felt less modern. Foreign residents were still a bit of a novelty so we used to hear a lot of gasps followed by calls of ‘waygookin’. I really like living in ‘modern Busan’, but still remember those days fondly.

M: Can you describe to us any projects or magazines you worked on in Busan in the 1990s and 2000s?

J: I was involved with the local and national KOTESOL (Korea TESOL) chapters when I first arrived and was friendly with the folks that ran the Expatriate, which morphed into the Exit, which is similar to the Busan Beat. When I started Pusanweb in 1997, I started collaborating with KOTESOL and the local magazines.

M: Tell us about Pusanweb and Koreabridge.

J: That is a long winding road. It started as a way to promote a friend’s new ‘Internet Room’ in 1997 (this was pre-PC rooms). I had just learned how to make web pages and thought an English language information page about Busan would be a good way to promote his business. There was almost no English information about Busan available online at that time. The business closed pretty quickly, but I enjoyed managing the site and in the pre-Facebook, pre-Instagram, pre-YouTube era, it played a significant role in the expat community. It eventually grew beyond Busan and evolved into Koreabridge.

M: Asides from Koreabridge, are there any other website you are currently working on?

J: Koreabridge was always part of a bigger vision called ‘Worldbridges’. Along the way, I’ve worked on websites like Travelbridges, Earthbridges, Englishbridges, ELT Live, EdTechTalk, Webcast Academy, and PuentesAlMundo. These days, most of those are dormant, but the one I plan to focus on next is Englishbridges.net.

M: Tell us about your current role at Busan University of Foreign Studies.

J: I taught there for five years (1999~2004) until my wife and I moved the U.S. for six years. I started working there again when we returned in 2010. Aside from teaching undergraduate courses and in the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation, I coordinate the Teacher Training Program which is an intensive six-month program for experienced public school teachers.

M: You moved to Thailand at one point, and home, for a short while. Tell us a bit about that.

J: After my first three years here, I decided to focus on my ‘Worldbridges’ vision for a while. (www.worldbridges.net) I spent a couple of months in Thailand building Travelbridges and doing some pretty low tech webcasting from the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. I then spent a few months in Dharamsala, India building Worldbridges Tibet and providing web support to the Tibetan Government in Exile. I came back in 1999 and met my wife shortly thereafter. After my father died in 2003, we decided to move back to New Hampshire and wound up staying for almost six years. I did my best to keep Pusanweb alive from afar, but focused more on other websites at that time. Both my wife and I missed life in Busan and returned in 2010.

M: What kind of work have you done with KOTESOL?

J: Aside from attending local and national events for years, I’ve done a fair amount of video interviews and live webcasting from their major conferences. KOTESOL has always provided a good opportunity to have interesting conversations, online and offline.

M: What kind of projects have you experienced with Google Hangouts?

J: In the early days of webcasting, it was technically quite challenging to use a program like Skype and stream it live so others could listen and/or watch at the same time and participate in a backchannel text chat. Google Hangouts made all of that super simple - free streamable video conferences. Ironically, shortly after Google Hangouts came on the scene, I took a step back from webcasting as the day job started taking more time. I still do a bit of ‘Hanging out’ with my BUFS students as a part of online class talk shows.

M: Thank you for talking the time to speak with me about Pusan and your story.

J: No problem, anytime.
