 Caroll Clery is a woman of color. It bursts from her smile, pours from her eyes, thunders from her laughter and dances on her paintings! Caroll was born in French Guiana where she first developed her fascination for color. The artist was raised in France and met her Norwegian husband and settled in Stavanger, Norway to start their family of three children. Caroll's rainbow touched down here in Busan in 2015 when her husband was transferred. She has been fascinated by color since her youth and they bound out of her work like the sun off a beach umbrella on a hot summer's day. M: When did you start painting?
C: I started painting 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my second child, though my interest started long before. At home I had a beautiful collection of Oracles and Tarot Cards, well drawn by amazing artists. These cards were very colorful and even though some might be negative, you could still see how beautiful they were. 

 One day I took one of the rectangular shaped cards, painted on it and then put on a paper. Later, a friend who was also a painter came to see me and she liked the card and the colors I painted. I didn’t think I was good at drawing but this friend encouraged me. I was reminded that I had the gift of colors and that drawing is a technique I can learn. Later on I bought a painting kit and started painting. 

M: What inspires your painting?
C: I was born in French Guiana, an overseas department of France on the northeast coast of SouthAmerica. Growing up in France, I kept the tastes of exotic fruits, kindness of people, and the different colors of my native home. My paintings reflect all that. I like all that is kind, tender, jovial, and affectionate. I may not be able to live in the North Pole but for sure even if I live in an Igloo, I will color it. I love smiles and not only just smiles, but beautiful smiles. I don’t have a specific painting style. However, I know that I am spontaneous and I always see positivity, colorful things and people. I love flowers and nature and I also paint for kids. My paintings are often times very colorful and fresh. 

M: Do you do exhibitions?
C: Yes, but f i rst and foremost , I paint because I like it. I don’t do it professionally. If people are interested in my painting, then all they have to do is let me know. 

M: Do you have any plans ofadvancing your paintings to aprofessional level?
C: You know I don’t want to be materialistic. I would like to be free and let life take the lead. It is true that opportunities come my way and that I have so much potential that I am not exploiting. Actually, I am afraid of critics, especially since my style is innate and that I didn’t go to school to learn painting. As you may know there will always be professionals looking at my work and my style which is a bit different. It is spontaneous. Honestly, I don’t have the confidence to pursue it as a professional. But from people’s response to my work, I am encouraged to get over my fear and to do much more.

M: What are your impressions of Busan after living here for 3 years?
C: My 3 years living in Busan have been absolutely positive. I managed to adapt to this environment. People here welcomed me and are always ready to help. They have been very kind, open and generous. I got so many incredible opportunities, met wonderful friends and I can now say that living in Korea is pure bliss. I love the hospitality, the food and the Korean culture has been a beautiful enrichment. Before I came to Korea I was told Korea was very conservative and not open to foreigners, but I can confidently say my experience has been different and way above my expectations. Moreover, the people of Busan liked my exhibition. A lecturer of Art helped me organize it in Songjeong and the turn-out was overwhelmingly beautiful. 

M: What does the future look like for you?

C: I want to be an illustrator for children’s books. I think it would be interesting. I would like to narrate fables for them and I am also interested in writing stories that children will like. This is all inspired through my paintings as the expression of my soul; the joy to be able to savor life to its full extent.

 캐롤 클러리(Caroll Clery)는 컬러풀한 작가라고 정의할 수 있다. 형형색색의 색상들은 작가의 미소, 눈, 웃음 그리고 작품까지 곳곳에서 구현된다. 프랑스 기아나(Guiana)에서 태어나 어린 시절을 보낸 작가는 노르웨이 출신의 남편을 만나 노르웨이 스타방게르(Stavanger)에 세 아이들과 함께 정착했다. 캐롤은 2015년, 남편과 함께 부산에 살기 시작했다. 작가는 유년기부터 색감에 영감을 받아왔으며, 한여름날 뜨거운 태양을 막아내는 비치 파라솔과 같이 작품에 색상에 대한 영감을 나타냈다. 아래 인터뷰를 위해 직접 작가를 만났다. 작가 이메일은caroleellingsen@gmail.com 이다. 

M: 언제부터 그림을 그리기 시작했나요?
C: 13년 전, 둘째 아이를 임신했을 때 그림을 그리기 시작했어요. 관심은 훨씬 더 전부터 있었지만요. 고향에서 저는 유명 작가들이 그린타로 카드들을 모으는 것을 좋아했어요. 이러한 카드들 중 몇 개는 부정적인 뜻을 담고 있음에도 컬러풀하고 예쁘죠. 하루는 직사각형의 카드 위에 그림을 덧입혀 종이 위에 놓았어요. 나중에 작가인 한 친구가 저를 보러 왔었는데, 제가 색을 덧입힌 카드가 마음에 든다고 하더군요. 난 내가 그림을 잘 그린다고 생각하지 않았는데 그 친구가 저에게 용기를 줬어요. 그 때 제가 색감에 재능이 있다는 것을 알게 되었어요. 나중에 저는 그림도구들을 사서 그림을 그리기 시작했죠. 

M: 어디에서 영감을 받나요?
C: 저는 남미 북동부 해안에 위치한 프랑스 기아나에서 태어났어요. 프랑스에서 어린 시절을 보내며 이국적인 과일들, 친절한 사람들, 그리고 형형색색의 색상들에 많은 영향을 받으며 자랐어요. 제 그림은 그런 것에 모두 영향을 받죠. 저는 친절하고, 부드럽고, 쾌활하고, 다정한 모든 것들을 사랑해요. 저는 북극과 같은 곳에 살 수 없을 거예요. 하지만 제가 북극에 살았다면 이글루에도 색을 입혔겠죠. 저는 아름다운 미소를 좋아해요. 특별한 그림 스타일은 없지만, 항상 긍정적인 시선으로 사물과 사람들을 바라봅니다. 꽃과 자연을 좋아하고 아이들을 그리는 것을 좋아해요. 제 작품들은 대부분은 컬러풀하고 상쾌한 느낌을 주죠. 

M: 전시도 하시나요?
C: 그럼요, 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 제가 좋아하기 때문에 그림을 그린다는 점이에요. 저는 전문적이라고는 생각하지 않아요. 

M: 전문 작가 수준으로 나아갈 계획이 있으신가요?
C: 물질주의적으로 되고 싶진 않아요. 자유롭게 흘러가는 대로 인생을 놔두고 싶어요. 앞으로 많은 기회가 있을 것이고, 저에게도 제가 모르는 많은 잠재력이 있다고 생각합니다. 사실 저는 비판이 두렵고, 특히 저는 미술 정규 교육을 받지 않았어요. 전문적인 시각은 좀 다르잖아요. 저는 자발적으로 그림을 그리기 때문에 솔직히 말하자면 전문 작가가 되는 것에 자신은 없어요. 그러나 제 작품에 대한 사람들의 반응이 그러한 두려움을 이기게 해주고 저를 독려해준답니다.

M: 3년간 부산에 살면서, 부산에 대한 인상이 어떠신가요?
C: 엄청 좋아요! 적응하기 위해 많이 노력했어요. 부산 사람들은 따뜻하고 항상 도와주려고 해요. 친절하고, 열려있고 너그럽죠. 여기서 많은 기회를 얻었고, 좋은 친구들을 사귀었고, 부산 생활은 행복 그 자체라고 말할 수 있겠네요! 한국 사람들의 환대와, 한국 음식, 한국 문화 모두 좋아요. 한국에 오기 전, 한국이 외국인에게 보수적이라고 들었기 때문에, 제 기대와는 완전히 어긋났다고 말할 수 있어요. 더욱이, 부산 사람들이 제전시를 좋아해줬어요. 미술 강사가 송정에서 전시를 하게 해줬고 결과도 좋았어요. 

M: 미래에는 어떨 거 같아요?
C: 어린이 책에 일러스트를 그려 넣는 작가가 되고 싶어요. 재미있을 것 같아요. 동화 읽어주는 것을 좋아하고 어린이들이 좋아하는 스토리를 쓰는 것도 좋아해요. 이러한 꿈 역시 제 영혼을 나타내는 것과 마찬가지인 저의 작품들을 통해 영감을 받았어요.
