There are lots of accommodation options in Busan as the holiday destination for Korea and increasingly for Chinese and Russians and young people following the K-pop culture and buying cosmetics (esp. Chinese and S.E. Asians). There are so many options such as Airbnb, The Busan Youth Hostel Arpina, Couchsurfing and the guest houses, many of which are huddled east of the main shopping street in Haeundae.

  한국의 유명 관광지인 부산에는 다양한 형태의 숙박 업소가 많이 있다. 최근에는 중국인, 러시아인, 케이팝 팬들과 화장품을 사러 오는 관광객들(예를 들면 중국인과 동남아시아인)의 수도 점점 늘고 있다. 에어비앤비, 부산 유스호스텔 아르피나, 카우치 서핑, 게스트하우스 등 다양한 선택지가 열려 있고, 이들 중 대부분은 해운대 쪽인 동부산에 밀집해 있다.

Couch Surfing 카우치 서핑

  There is actually quite a sizable couch surfing community in Busan. In fact, Bollywood’s Busan in Gwangalli hosts a couch surfing party every Friday evening from 8P.M. to 10P.M., where some shots are only 1,000 KRW, and the food is really good! The couch surfers of Busan even have a Facebook group, called the “couch surfing Busan Community”, where you can find a lot of fun and exciting things to do and see and places to stay in Busan. Now, what is couch surfing?

  Well, basically, you can join a group or a site, such as www.couchsurfing.com, where you can offer a room or a sofa in your home to a traveller stopping in for a day or two, or longer, for free. If you do, you’ll open yourself up to many great stories, and chances to meet cool people. You can also let people know that you are travelling and looking for a place to stay. You are not obligated to do both, so there’s no pressure.

  I also had the opportunity to interview one of the many hosts.

  부산에는 상당한 규모의 카우치 서핑 커뮤니티가 있다. 사실 광안리 ‘발리우드 부산 Bollywood’s Busan’에서는 매주 금요일 저녁 8시부터 10시까지 카우치 서핑 파티가 열린다. 단돈 1,000원에 마실 수 있는 음료도 있고 음식도 아주 맛있다! 부산의 카우치 서퍼들은 “카우치 서핑 부산 커뮤니티”라는 페이스북 그룹도 운영하고 있다. 이 커뮤니티를 통해 부산의 즐길거리는 물론 숙소도 알아볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 도대체 카우치 서핑이란 무엇일까?

  기본적으로 카우치 서핑을 위해서는 www.couchsurfing.com과 같은 그룹이나 웹사이트에 가입할 수 있다. 이 사이트를 통해 여행자들에게 방이나 소파를 빌려주는 것이다. 기간은 하루, 이틀, 그 이상 또는 제한이 없을 수도 있다. 카우치 서핑을 통해 다양한 사람들을 만나는 멋진 경험을 할 수 있다. 여행 중에 머물 곳을 찾는 경우에도 이 웹사이트를 이용할 수 있다. 물론 두 가지를 다 해야 하는 것은 아니다. 그러니 부담 갖지 않아도 괜찮다.

  익명을 요청한 호스트 한 명을 인터뷰할 수 있는 기회가 생겼다.

1)   How long have you been running couch surfing in Busan?

  I made my first CS account in 2008. My English teacher introduced me to couch surfing. My first surfing experience was in 2010. I stayed with a French girl in Paris. My first hosting experience was in 2012. I hosted Oddur, and he was from Iceland. Both of my first experiences were amazing.

1)   부산에서 카우치 서핑을 운영하신 지 얼마나 됐나요?

  2008년 첫 계정을 생성했어요. 영어 선생님께서 제게 카우치 서핑(Couch Surfing: CS)를 소개해 주셨어요. 2010년, 프랑스 파리 Magda’s place에서 프랑스인과 함께 묵었던 것이 제 첫 서핑 경험이었어요. 첫 호스트 경험은 2012년이었고 아이슬란드 출신 Oddur가 저희 집에 묵은 손님이었답니다. 두 번 모두 굉장한 경험이었어요!

2)   Have you tried couch surfing in other cities in Korea and overseas?

  I never CS in other cities in Korea. I have CS abroad a lot. I did CS three times during my first travel experience to Europe. I did it approx 20 times during my first travels to the American continent. Unfortunately, I couldn't surf in Taiwan and Japan.

2)   한국 다른 지역 또는 해외에서 카우치 서핑을 해보신 적 있나요?

  국내에서는 카우치 서핑을 해본 적 없습니다. 해외에서는 많이 해 봤죠. 첫 유럽 여행에서 세 번의 카우치 서핑을 했어요. 처음 미주대륙을 여행했을 때는 20번 정도 카우치 서핑을 했죠. 안타깝게도 대만과 일본에서는 카우치 서핑을 할 수 없었어요.

3)   Is couch surfing very popular in Busan?

  I don't think it is popular in Busan. I heard from travellers that they find it hard to CS in Busan. I think Koreans are shy. Because Koreans think their English is not perfect.

3)   카우치 서핑은 부산에서 인기가 있는 편인가요?

  인기가 있다고는 생각하지 않아요. 여행객들 말을 들어보면 부산에서 CS를 찾는 게 힘들대요. 제 생각에 한국인들은 부끄러움이 많고 자신의 영어가 완벽하지 않다고 생각하기 때문인 것 같아요.

4)   Tell us one good experience and one bad experience about couch surfing in Busan.

  There are many good experiences. I have learned about new ways of life and our world which changed my view. Sometimes, they cook their traditional foods for me. They also gave me gifts from their countries. Besides, I help them. I helped them to book a ticket or make a reservation. I wrote something in Korean for them, like for hitchhiking or vegetarian foods. They all are nice people. So I threw out my prejudice. Above all, I really value the stories they brought, like stories about their lives and dreams. It is always so touching.

  On the other hand, I have had some bad experiences. Some travellers are very rude. Some of them dirtied my toilet and didn't clean it. They think CS is a free hostel. Too bad, I made them annoyed, because I am a big snorer. When I used to live in a studio apartment, I noticed some of them couldn't fall asleep well.

4)   부산에서 카우치 서핑을 운영하신 지 얼마나 됐나요?

  좋은 기억은 정말 많아요. 새로운 삶과 세상을 배웠고, 덕분에 제 가치관도 달라졌어요. 가끔씩 저를 위해 자기 나라의 음식을 요리해주는 여행객들도 있었어요. 선물을 주시기도 했죠. 물론 저도 도움을 드렸죠. 티켓 예매나 예약을 도와준 적도 있고, 히치하이킹이나 채식 식당을 찾을 때 필요한 한국어 표현을 적어 주기도 했어요. 모두 좋은 분들이었어요. 덕분에 저도 편견을 없앨 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다도 묵고 가시는 분들이 자신의 삶이나 꿈에 대해 이야기해 주시는 걸 참 좋아해요. 이야기들은 늘 감동적이예요.

  반면 나쁜 경험도 있었어요. 몇몇 여행객들은 굉장히 무례했습니다. 화장실을 더럽혀 놓고 청소하지 않는 경우도 있었고요. CS를 무료 호텔 정도로 생각하더라고요. 안타깝게도 저 때문에 그 분들도 짜증이 났을 거예요. 제가 코를 많이 골거든요. 원룸에 살 때는 몇몇 여행객들은 깊게 잠들지 못한다는 걸 눈치챌 수 있었어요.

5)   Have you organized activities for your guests?

  I usually organize hiking for my guests over the weekend, because I couldn't spend time to hang out with them on week days. After hiking, I take them to a fish market, and then we have dinner together. I am so glad that I can show them around, introducing various Busan styles, foods and culture. I am so gratified that they seem so happy with our food.

5)   투숙객들을 위해 액티비티를 계획해 본 적 있나요?

  평일에는 시간을 낼 수 없어서 주로 주말을 이용해 등산을 해요. 등산이 끝나면 수산 시장으로 가서 함께 저녁을 먹습니다. 다양한 부산의 음식, 문화를 소개할 수 있어서 기뻐요. 식사에 만족하는 모습을 볼 때마다 기뻐요. 혼자 둘러보는 걸 선호하시는 여행객도 계세요. 부산에 다른 일정이 있거나 친구를 만나는 경우도 있는데 그 때는 제가 특별히 신경 쓸 건 없어요.

6)   How do travellers find couch surfing in Busan?

  They use CS Websites. They can find a host. In addition, some of them go to CS weekly meetups. They can share info or find nice hosts.

  I heard from my CS host friend that there's a weekly meet-up. I searched for it and found it after a great Indian curry at Bollywood Busan in Gwangalli, right next to Café Primo.

6)   여행객들은 부산에서 카우치 서핑을 어떻게 찾나요?

  CS 웹사이트를 이용해요. 거기서 호스트를 찾을 수 있죠. 여행객들 중에는 매주 CS 만남에 참여하는 분들도 계세요. 거기서 정보를 얻거나 좋은 호스트를 찾기도 합니다.

  CS 호스트 친구들 얘기를 들어보면, 매주 모임이 있다고 하더라고요. 모임을 알아보다가 광안리 카페 프리모 바로 옆 인도 카레 식당 발리우드 부산에서 모임이 열린다는 것을 알게 되었고, 사장님과 유익한 대화를 나누었어요.

7)   Please tell our readers a little bit about the weekly Couch Surfing event that Bollywood hosts every Friday evening?

  We do weekly meet-ups at Bollywood Busan every Friday from 9pm; it’s been close to two years since we have started it. However I should say that the community here is still in its early days. That being said, we do have around 8-10 regular members (locals & foreigners) in addition to travellers who are visiting Busan from time to time. Summers are usually busier as there are more tourists in Busan during that time.

  The event we do every Friday is a platform for locals of Busan (Koreans or expats) to hang out with travellers who are visiting Busan or for locals to meet people from a specific country in order to get some basic information about that region. It is also a chance to just come out and have a chat over few drinks; we do have special cheap drinks keeping in mind that most of the couch surfers are backpackers and are on a budget.

  The concept of couch surfing is to open your door to strangers and become friends with them. I myself have been doing couch surfing for more than 10 years and have been hosting many travellers for the last two years in my apartment at Gwangalli Beach. In addition I have been to couch surfings meet-ups in more than 20 cities all over the world and always enjoy my time meeting with diverse people.

7)   독자님들께 발리우드 부산에서 매주 금요일에 열리는 카우치 서핑 이벤트에 대해 조금 더 설명 부탁드립니다.

  매주 금요일 밤 9시부터 발리우드 부산에서 모임을 갖습니다. 시작한 지 거의 2년 정도 된 것 같네요. 서울에는 훨씬 더 큰 카우치 서핑 커뮤니티가 있습니다만 부산은 시작 단계라고 생각해요. 8-10명 정도의 정규 멤버와 주기적으로 부산을 방문하는 여행객들이 있습니다. 부산에 더 많은 관광객이 찾아오는 여름이 가장 바쁩니다.

  금요일마다 열리는 모임은 부산 시민들과 부산 거주 외국인들이 부산을 찾는 관광객들과 시간을 보내거나, 특정 국가나 지역을 방문할 계획을 갖고 있는 한국인들이 그곳 출신 사람들과 정보를 교류할 수 있는 장입니다. 간단한 음료와 함께 즐거운 대화를 나눌 수도 있고요. 대부분의 카우치 서퍼들이 배낭여행 또는 저예산 여행을 한다는 점을 고려해 저렴한 값에 마실 수 있는 음료도 있습니다.

  카우치 서핑이란 모르는 사람을 집으로 초대해 친구가 된다는 점에서 때로는 무료 숙박의 기회를 얻을 수도 있습니다. 저는 10년 정도 카우치 서핑을 해왔고, 최근 2년 동안 광안리 해변가에 있는 제 아파트에서 호스트로 여러 여행객들을 만나 왔어요. 전 세계 20여개 이상의 도시에서 카우치 서핑 모임에 참여해 다양한 사람들과 만나기도 했습니다.

  This hostel has a very good location which is nearby food stalls and the Gukje Market. We liked the ambiance of this hostel, as the washroom here is like a hotel's very luxurious individual bathroom. The resting and hangout room/movie room has nice leather chairs to watch movies. They have movie watching schedules. This hostel is around 300 meters from Nampo metro station and Jagalchi.

  The staffs can speak English. The advantage of this small guesthouse is that it’s close by Choryang subway station, and it's near Busan Station and Chinatown, which has a great international variety. They offer three, four and six beds in their rooms, so it's ideal for a group of friends or a family, but they don't have a dorm or single rooms. Check-in is from 3 P.M. to 6P.M. and check-out is at 12 P.M.

  This guesthouse is in Haeundae, so there's really no need for them to organize trips, events, or parties, since Haeundae is THE TOP SPOT in Busan, if not all of Korea. Check-in is at 4 P.M., but if you arrive early; you can leave your bags at the front desk. Check-out is at 11 A.M. There is a communal kitchen that you can use until 11 P.M., so it's a great place to stay to save some cash. Even better, the friendly Korean who works at the front desk said that the price is cheaper if you come in and book face to face. The website is quite user-friendly and looks like a lot of fun to navigate.

  판다 게스트하우스는 해운대에 위치하고 있다. 해운대가 전국은 몰라도 적어도 부산 최고의 핫스팟인 만큼, 이곳에서는 여행, 이벤트, 파티 등 다양한 경험을 쉽게 할 수 있다. 체크인은 오후 4시부터지만 일찍 도착하는 경우 프론트 데스크에 짐을 맡길 수 있다. 체크아웃은 오전 11시이다. 공용 주방은 밤 11시까지 사용할 수 있어 식사 비용을 아낄 수 있다. 게다가 친절한 프론트 데스크 직원이 알려준 더 좋은 사실은 직접 면대면으로 예약할 경우 더 싼 가격에 방을 얻을 수 있다는 것이다. 웹사이트도 둘러보기 편하게 되어 있어 살펴보는 재미가 있다.

  The staff speaks English very well. The guesthouse offers a pub crawl to Seomyeon every Saturday night, and will organize language exchanges in the future. Other tourist destinations are easily reached by the nearby subways (Beomnaegol, Beomil and Seomyeon Stations). The guesthouse doesn't have a restaurant, but hey, we are in Korea, so there are restaurants everywhere, especially in Seomyeon. Guests can check-in from 3 P.M. to 11 P.M., and check-out is at 11 A.M. You can book directly through the website, or on Agoda or booking.com. You can also work here as a volunteer at the reception!

  This guesthouse is located in Gwangalli Beach, and is actually quite easy to find, same building with a Starbucks, up on the sixth floor. It has two adjoining rooms, with a mega spectacular panoramic view of the beach, sea and bridge. There is also a large balcony out back when guests can have some drinks, eat breakfast or view the mountains. There is a kitchen, and some beds on the floor, Ondol-style (traditional Korean floor heating system) on the floor. There is only one place for a shower, but they do have two toilets.

  이화 맨션은 광안리 해안가에 위치하고 있어 찾기도 쉽다. 스타벅스와 같은 건물 6층이다. 광안리 바다와 광안대교가 훤히 내다보이는 방 두 개가 나란히 붙어 있다. 투숙객들이 산의 경치를 바라보며 음료나 아침식사를 즐길 수 있는 큰 발코니도 뒤쪽에 마련되어 있다. 주방이 있고, 침대형 방과 온돌형 방(전통 한국 난방 시스템)이 있다. 샤워실은 한 군데이지만 화장실은 두 개다.
