Last winter we had a remarkable two-day tour to three wonderful places in South Korea. The trip was arranged by a tour-operating company we found on Facebook. As Bangladeshis, we are little acquainted with snowfall and icy surroundings. We currently live in the fantastic city of Busan and consider ourselves lucky to have experienced snowfall here in early January which is a rare phenomenon in the city that experiences very infrequent snowfall, compared to other cities of the country. Eager to enjoy the shivering cold, and some frozen landscapes, we embarked on our journey on Saturday, January 13, very early in the morning. After a comfortable and sleepy journey of about two and a half hours, we reached Namiseom Island, a small island resembling a floating leaf on the North Han River.

  As we got off the ferry, we had to pass through immigration! This is because the island claims to be an independent state having its own currency and all! Immediately after entering through the main gate we were greeted by cute snowmen of different sizes and having brightly colored scarves tied around their necks. After that, there was a snow slide to enjoy along with some other sports like skiing. After finishing all these activities, we started to explore the snow-covered island.

  지난 겨울, 나는 가족과 함께 이틀 간 한국의 아름다운 여행지들을 다녀왔다. 페이스북에서 찾은 여행사를 통해 일정을 짰다. 방글라데시에서 온 우리들은 눈이나 얼음으로 뒤덮인 풍경이 낯설었다. 현재 우리는 한국 다른 도시에 비해 비교적 눈이 적게 내리는 부산에 살고 있는데, 부산에서는 드문 일인 1월 초에 눈을 맞이하는 행운을 누렸다. 살을 에는 듯한 추위와 얼어붙은 풍경을 감상할 준비를 단단히 하고, 우리는 1월 13일 토요일 이른 아침 여행을 시작했다. 조금 피곤하지만 두 시간 반 가량의 편안한 이동 끝에 북한강 위에 떠 있는 나뭇잎을 닮은 작은 섬 남이섬에 도착했다.

  페리에서 내린 뒤 출입국 관리소로 향했다! 남이섬은 독자적인 화폐를 사용하는 등 다양한 면에서 독립적인 지역이기 때문이었다. 입구에 들어서자 다양한 크기의 귀여운 눈사람이 우리를 반겨 주었다. 목에는 각양각색의 목도리를 매고 있었다. 그 후에는 스키 등 다양한 스포츠와 더불어 눈썰매를 탈 수 있었다. 여러 가지 액티비티를 즐기고 난 뒤 눈 덮인 남이섬 관광을 시작했다.

  The main pathway in the middle of the island is bordered with chestnut and poplar trees. Since we went there in January, the trees were bare; however, their black branches covered with white snow made them unearthly and surreal. There was a big open

space surrounded by Alpine trees. The golden rays of the sun reflected on this snow-filled area creating a bright halo all around. We made snowballs and chased each other throwing them around. My son proved to be a competent runner on the snow.

  At night we stayed in a comfortable room having an ondol system in Kensington Resort Cheongpyeong. At around 7 in the evening, we went to the Garden of Morning Calm, a 30,000m2 garden, which was illuminated by thousands of brightly colored lights. Lights were arranged in the shapes of flowers, bears, huts, trees, Santa’s sled and what not. We walked and walked around the garden until we felt really tired; it covers such a big area.

  섬 중앙으로 통하는 중앙 통로 양 옆은 밤나무와 포플러나무가 늘어서 있다. 1월이었기 때문에 나무는 앙상했지만, 까만 나뭇가지 위로 소복이 눈이 덮인 광경은 어딘지 비현실적이었다. 고산식물로 둘러싸인 큰 공간도 있었다. 황금빛 햇살이 흰 눈으로 뒤덮인 대지에 반사되어 온통 밝은 빛으로 가득했다. 우리는 그곳에서 눈덩이를 만들어 던지며 눈싸움을 했다. 내 아들도 눈 속에서 잘 달렸다.

  청평 켄싱턴 리조트의 온돌방에서 편안한 밤을 보냈다. 저녁 7시 무렵에는 아침고요수목원을 찾았다. 30,000㎡에 달하는 정원은 수 천 개의 알록달록한 전등으로 빛나고 있었다. 전등은 꽃, 곰, 오두막, 나무, 산타 썰매 등 여러 가지 모양으로 꾸며져 있었다. 우리는 지칠 때까지 넓디 넓은 공원을 걸어다녔다.

  Next morning, after a sumptuous buffet breakfast, we hurriedly started to catch up with the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival. The journey was along a meandering road through ice-covered mountains. We were going up and up, through a winding road which was both thrilling and magnificent!

  We entered the venue of the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival by walking on an overhead bridge. The sight below was simply amazing. It was like a vast white stadium divided into smaller parts. Lots and lots of people were engaged in various activities on different patches of ice. My husband and son enthusiastically took part in activities like ice tube and ice soccer. During ice soccer, a Korean family joined us and we had a great time. There was an event called "bare hand fishing" which we watched from above. This was tremendous fun! A group of people tried to catch fish with their bare hands in a pool and many of them managed to actually catch some big ones. We also took part in ice sledding and ice fishing. Some deep holes were dug through the ice so that the river water underneath could be seen. Then we were given fishing rods and expert guides showed us how to fish. In spite of the guide's sincere effort our luck betrayed us. We remained empty-handed while some of our fellow fisher people beamed with their marvelous catch.

  다음 날 뷔페식 조식을 먹은 후 서둘러 화천 산천어 축제로 향했다. 축제 장소까지는 얼음이 덮인 구불구불한 산길로 이어져 있었다. 굉장한 경치였다. 구름다리를 건너 축제에 들어섰다. 발 아래 광경은 그야말로 장관이었다! 마치 거대한 흰 스타디움이 잘게 나뉘어져 있는 것 같았다. 수많은 사람들이 얼음 위에서 다양한 활동을 즐기고 있었다. 신이 난 남편과 아들은 얼음 축구에 참여했다. 얼음 축구를 하는 동안 한국인 가족이 합류해 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. “맨손 낚시”라는 이벤트도 있었다. 우리는 위에서 이벤트를 구경할 수 있었는데, 정말 즐거운 경험이었다! 여러 명의 사람들이 맨손으로 낚시를 했고, 그 중 몇 몇은 실제로 꽤 큰 물고기를 잡기도 했다. 얼음 썰매와 낚시에 참여하기도 했다. 아래로 강물이 흘러가는 것이 보일 정도로 깊은 구멍도 있었다.

  낚싯대를 받아 들고 숙련된 가이드가 낚시 시범을 보여 주었다. 하지만 가이드의 열띤 노력에도 불구하고 우리는 운이 없었다. 다른 사람들이 물고기를 잡고 신나게 웃는 동안 우리는 빈 손이었다.

  After this fun-packed weekend, we started on the chartered bus back towards our destinations. Oh! What a time we had! This escapade was refreshing as well as enriching. The mental peace and calm we found in the serene Nami Island, covered with white ice, is certainly something to cherish forever. The joy we found in various activities in the Hwacheon Ice Fishing Festival fuelled us up for the busy life we left behind as we embarked on this wonderful journey.

  즐거운 주말을 보내고 우리는 다시 버스에 몸을 싣고 부산으로 돌아왔다. 어찌나 즐거웠던지! 흰 눈으로 뒤덮인 고요한 남이섬에서 우리가 찾은 힐링의 시간은 영원히 잊지 못할 기억으로 남을 것이다. 화천 산천어 축제에서 경험한 모든 것들도 바쁜 일상 속에서 잠시 쉬어갈 환상적인 여행의 기억이 되어줄 것이다.
