J: Today, we are going to talk about the popular T.V. Drama, Mr. Sunshine. I was astonished that you saw it. I also heard two
American girls talking about Mr. Sunshine at the Busan Global Center lounge.
P: Yes, it is a captivating story.
J: 오늘은 인기 있는 TV 드라마 미스터 션샤인에 대해 이야기 해 볼 텐데요. 이 드라마를 보셨다고 해서 굉장히 놀랐어요. 부산글로벌센터 라운지에서 미국인 여성 두 분이 미스터 션샤인에 대해 이야기하는 걸 듣기도 했고요.
P: 네. 굉장히 매력적인 드라마예요.
J: Tell me the story and how you feel about it.
P: The Korean TV drama "Mr. Sunshine" spans a period of Korean history starting with the Shinmiyangyo incident of 1871 (신미양요),
the first military confrontation between American and Joseon forces and runs up to the destitution of the Joseon Dynasty under Japanese pressure in 1910. This period of geopolitical shift with Japan emulating western power through colonization is more than intriguing enough to hold viewers' interest but the writer, Kim Eun-Sook, has layered this with a thick icing of emotional sweetness in the Romeo and Juliette relationship between a lowborn Korean-American Eugene Choi, played by Lee Byung-Hun and Kim Tae-Ri in the role of high-born Korean Lady Go Ae-Shin.
The plot has young Choi running for his life after seeing his father murdered by a nobleman, followed by Choi's mother drowning in a well. Through the help of an American missionary, Joseph Stenson, a father figure for Choi, the boy makes it to the streets of New York as an orphan immigrant. In a moment of despair, he sees a group of army soldiers and notices a black soldier laughing with the whites and decides this is his access to becoming an American.
Fast forward and U.S. Marine Captain Choi is dispatched to the American Legation in Hanyang (the former name of Seoul) under the orders of senior office and friend Kyle Moore (David Lee McInnis). Our dashing young officer meets proud and beautiful daughter of respected noble family. She also happens to be a highly trained sniper at the service of the underground Righteous Army dedicated to
resisting foreign influences from taking over the country. The man never forsakes his Americanness but assumes the cause of his love.
J: 드라마 줄거리와 감상을 들려주시겠어요?
P: 드라마 “미스터 션샤인”은 미국과 조선의 첫 군사적 대립이었던 1871년 신미양요부터 1910년 일제강점기의 조선까지를 다룹니다. 일본이 서구 열강들을 모방하여 식민지를 넓혀가며 지정학적 변화를 맞이하던 이 시기는 그 자체만으로도 흥미롭습니다. 김은숙 작가는 이러한 시대적 배경에 미천한 출신의 한국계 미국인 유진 초이(이병헌)와 양반가의 영애 고애신(김태리) 사이의 ‘로미오와 줄리엣’ 같은 사랑 이야기를 덧씌웠습니다.
어린 유진 초이는 아버지가 양반의 손에 살해 당하고 어머니 역시 우물에 빠져 사망한 뒤 도망칩니다. 미국인 선교사 조셉은 유진 초이의 아버지와 같은 인물을 상징하며, 고아가 된 유진은 뉴욕으로 오게 됩니다. 절망 속에서 우연히 흑인들이 백인들과 어우러져 웃고 있는 군인 무리를 목격한 후, 그 역시 미군이 되어 미국 사회에 편입하고자 합니다.
시간이 지나 미 해병대 장교가 된 유진 초이는 선배이자 친구인 카일 무어(데이비드 맥기니스 분)의 명령에 따라 한양(서울의 옛 이름) 주재 미공사관으로 파견을 오게 됩니다. 한양에 온 유진은 명망 있는 양반가의 아름답고 자신만만한 영애 고애신을 만나게 되죠. 고애신 역시 조국을 지키기 위해 비밀 의병단에서 저격수로 훈련 받은 여성입니다. 남자는 미국인 신분을 버리지는 않지만 그녀를 사랑하게 되는 내용이죠.
J: What was the best scene?
P: The most visually appealing scene for me is the setting where the lovers are standing on the stone bridge near the potters’ house. As
a viewer, I often hopped cupids hands would just push the two together. But the distance between the lovers seems unbridgeable.
J: 최고의 명장면은 뭐라고 생각하나요?
P: 제가 뽑은 최고의 명장면은 두 연인이 도공의 집 근처 돌다리에 서 있는 장면입니다. 시청자 입장에서는 사랑의 큐피드가 두 사람의 사랑을 진전시켜 주길 바라게 돼요. 하지만 이 장면에서 두 사람 사이의 거리는 메울 수 없는 것처럼 보입니다.
J: Do you feel the patriotic feeling raised in the film?
P: I can understand that a Korean viewer would feel the country had been "done dirty" by the American sell out of their treaty promise to
help Joseon in case of neighboring interference and of course, repulsion by the Japanese aggression. In this drama, the Joseon Dynasty reformed too little, too late. The Righteous Army was not revolutionaries and seemed to be upholding the decay of the status quo. They were, from the beginning, doomed to failure. The young cadets in the military were idealistic but too few, too inexperienced, lacked leadership and guns. Hopeless.
For me, red lights go off when I feel someone trying to pull on patriotic heart strings because they pull down a curtain obscuring objectivity. The challenge for an artist is to portray and condemn evil behavior, place blame fairly on all responsible parties and avoid blaming all citizens for the sins of their moral and political leaders. Mr. Sunshine sometimes fell into the cliché of demonizing the Japanese as monsters.
J: 드라마에 드러난 애국 정신을 느낄 수 있으신가요?
P: 한국인 시청자들은 일본의 침략은 물론이고 외세의 간섭이 있을 때 조선을 돕겠다는 조약을 저버린 미국이 조국을 “더럽혔다”는 생각을 할 거라고 충분히 생각해요. 이 드라마 속에서 조선은 너무 조금씩, 너무 천천히 변화했어요. 의병들은 처음부터 실패할 수밖에 없는 운명이었던 거죠. 이 젊은 생도들은 이상주의자들이었지만 그 수가 너무 적었고, 너무 미숙했던 데다 리더십과 무기도 부족했어요. 절망적이죠.
저는 가끔 누군가 애국심을 너무 강조한 나머지 객관성을 잃어버릴 때 불안해지곤 해요. 악행을 묘사하려는 예술가들은 책임을 져야 하는 이들에게 동등한 책임을 지우고, 도덕적 또는 정치적 리더가 행한 일을 모든 사람의 죄인 것처럼 다뤄서는 안 돼요. 미스터 션샤인은 종종 일본을 괴물로 표현하는 클리셰를 범합니다.
J: Do you think the drama shows Korean features such as working well together and a fighting spirt in a moment of historical importance?
P: The common folk pretty much continued to do as they are told. The interesting cooperation is between samurai Goo Dong-Mae (Yoo Yeon-Seok), the widowed owner of the Glory Hotel, Kudo Hina (Kim Min-Jung, my favorite character) and Kim Hee-Sung (Byun Yo-Han), the newspaper editor (another endearing individual). These are all strong characters who are their own masters and do what they can for the cause. All of these characters have been influenced by life abroad.
I really enjoyed this movie. I began watching to learn about Korean history and got caught up in the romance. I wish our Romeo and Juliette would have taken the risk to explore their relationship but that would have made it a whole different movie.
J: 미스터 션샤인이 역사적으로 중요한 순간들에 한국인들이 똘똘 뭉쳐 거대 권력에 투쟁하는 국민성을 잘 드러냈다고 생각하시나요?
P: 평범한 시민들은 대부분 자신들의 임무를 잘 수행합니다. 흥미로운 것은 사무라이 구동매(유연석), 글로리 호텔의 사장 쿠도 히나(김민정 / 제가 제일 좋아하는 인물이죠!), 신문 기자 김희성(변요한 / 제가 좋아하는 또 다른 인물) 간의 관계입니다. 이들은 아주 주체적인 인물로 자신만의 이유가 있어 움직이는 사람들입니다. 이 셋 모두 장기 외국 체류 경험을 통해 외국의 영향을 받은 인물들이에요.
작품은 무척 좋았습니다. 한국 역사를 배우기 위해 보기 시작했다가 러브라인에 푹 빠지게 되었어요. 미스터 션샤인의 로미오와 줄리엣이 위험을 감수하고 관계를 진전시켰더라면 더 좋았겠지만, 그랬다면 전혀 다른 작품이 되었겠지요.
