“It is just a really nice environment to be a part of ” said Laurence Stangl, 47 years old expat from California.

It is a cold, wet Tuesday morning at an old flower shop in Haeundae. Once a week for about seven hours, busy bees take the flowers out and transform this place into a soup kitchen serving the forgotten elderly passed over as Haeundae became hip. On this “Chicken Day”, hundreds of chickens are boiled up to be served to the approximately 450 tired and bent old folks quietly sitting on blue plastic stool or standing along the sidewalk waiting for the call to pass through the line that food is being served. This feeding of the forgotten poor is all done by donations, volunteers and a warm-hearted shopkeeper, Mr. Ha and his wife, Ms. Kim.

Lor Stangl, a 47-year-old expat from California, is one of more than 50 volunteers helping at this weekly charity feeding, “I come here every Tuesday and when I arrive at 8:45, the ladies are already in the middle of cooking soup”. Hour by hour people are pouring water, stoking fires, preparing food, trays, setting up tables and stools, until it all works its way out on the sidewalk in front of the shop and down the street to in front of the old train station.

Lor discovered the kitchen back in August, 2017. Asked if he could recall the first morning he entered the flower shop to offer his

assistance, he answers with a big smiling “YES, definitely! For me, being completely foreign to this place and to step into it, I felt like being in someone’s kitchen and all of a sudden just having this unique experience of being a part of something very Korean. There was this instant camaraderie as we were working together” Lor reflects with appreciation.

For Lor, the best time of the day is the morning, before it gets too crowded and busy. “There are all these Korean women that come here. They are a couple of decades older than me and they are very dedicated and focused on what they are doing. They have been doing it for years. At the same time, they are so kind and put up with expats like me." Lor laughs with an apologetic expression on his face. Then he tells how the elder ladies will grab him by his arm and make him sit down and relax, all in Korean of course. Lor is taking Korean class at the Busan Global Center and asked if the environment at the soup kitchen gives him a chance to practice, he says he can recognize some sentences or words “but it is also a whole other set of vocabulary you use here, special kitchen tools for instance” he laughs sheepishly “at times I feel guilty because I can´t speak Korean” The place has an amazing spirit of “together we can do it”.

The soup kitchen in Haeundae is just one out of many soup kitchens in Busan. For the couple running the flower shop, Mr. Ha and Ms. Kim, it all began back in November, 1989. At that time, the Haeundae Station down the street was still open and the couple had often noticed how people in need were searching through the trash for food or anything things they could use. This inspired the couple to serve some free soup on a weekly basis. In the beginning, they got some helpful advice from a local church but most of it has been learning by doing. The very first pot of soup was for 30 people but only 10 showed up, now, almost 30 years later, each seating serves over 100 people, and there will normally be three seatings on a regular Tuesday.

If you want to help out at one of Busan's soup kitchens you don’t need to be part of any organization. The best advice from Lor is to come on a regular basis, “consistency will be a benefit for you and for the soup kitchen.” You will quickly find your place to be useful, make friends and fill your own soul with sustenance.
