It’s back to school time. For some expat families it is the first year in Busan, for others it’s back to the familiar. Start-up time is a good time to rethink how we engage in what we do and to commit to getting the most out of the experience. This is particularly true with school. Back to school time is a good time for students and parents to take a fresh look at the opportunities your school has to offer. Students and parents need to be proactive in finding the opportunities and getting involved in their school life.

  Remind your child that every school year is another chance to experiment, try new things, make new friends, learn a new musical instrument, try new art techniques and to push their limits. Your school has a collection of specialist who usually enjoys imparting their skills and knowledge to young people. School is not like the real world. If the student is not successful there is no risk they will be fired. Schools are delighted when students band together and propose clubs, community service initiatives and art projects such as drama or mural painting. Students are often unaware of their power to enrich their lives through school initiatives and as students are usually required to participate in co-curricular activities, they may as well create something they have a passion for and may help on a college application and into the future.

  The school already has money set aside for activities. The student initiator just needs to promote the idea, recruit students and find a responsible adult who shares their interest and is willing to sponsor the club. Encourage your student to think big. It is surprising the assets a school has that could be made available to students. Clubs don’t have to be limited to classroom space and computers. A school is a small industrial complex with welding machines, spray painting facilities, wood working shops, 3-D printers, commercial kitchens, computer mainframes, kilns, gardening tools, audio-visual facilities, musical instruments, sports equipment and more. All of this equipment comes with supporting talent that can teach skills and help with planning, supplies and overcome administrative obstacles. And don’t forget the network of talented parents who have a wealth of experience to support students and often have the time to commit once a week. Working parents also have resources at their companies that may be available for student use. After-school activities are often the most fun and social of the entire school day. These, along with student council and the school newspaper, are great training opportunities as they offer student leadership opportunities and foster goal setting, organizational and problem solving skills in areas that student actually choose to be involved in and can be an initiation into a career area that may flower later in life.

  Today ’s international schools have outreach programs to get parents of all the different national communities involved in creating an enriching international environment for the students and the families. Parent service to the school community range from reading stories to kindergarteners, supporting students with learning challenges such as dyslexia, helping in sports, drama, field trips, library assistance, homeroom parent, volunteering for a role in the PTA or sitting on the board of directors. Due to the high turnover in expats families, many of these posts go vacant every year. There are almost endless opportunities to help and to get to know students, teachers and administrators and savor that warm feeling of being part of something bigger than just your family.

  Again, as the old saying goes, “You get out of it what you put in”, and more! So push your student to put down their gadgets, and get involved in the opportunities your school has to offer. It will help them to meet new people, learn new skills, gain social status and respect and keep him busy in meaningful enterprise. Your best way to get him involved is by being the example and getting involved yourself. In school? Involved!

  다시 학교로 돌아갈 시간이다. 어떤 외국인 가족들에겐 부산에서 보내는 첫 해일 수도, 또 어떤 가족들은 학교로 돌아가는 것이 이미 익숙할 지도 모른다. 무언가를 시작하는 시점은 자신의 생활을 돌이켜보고 경험을 통해 최대한 좋은 결과를 이끌어낼 수 있는 시기이다. 특히 학교 생활이 그렇다. 학교로 돌아가는 이 시점은 학생들에게나 학부모에게나 학교에서 무엇을 얻을 수 있는지 다시금 되새겨보기 좋은 시기이다. 학생과 학부모는 학교 생활에서 어떤 기회들을 얻을 수 있는지 열심히 찾아볼 필요가 있다.

  아이들에게 학교라는 공간은 언제나 새로운 기회가 열려있다는 것을 상기시켜야 한다. 학교는 새로운 도전을 할 수 있고, 친구를 사귈 수 있고, 음악과 미술을 배울 수 있고, 한계를 뛰어넘을 수도 있다. 또한 어린 학생들에게 기술과 지식을 전수해 줄 다양한 전문가들이 포진해있는 곳이다. 학교는 학교 밖의 세상과는 다르다. 어떤 학생이 성공을 거두지 못한다고 해도 해고 당할 염려는 없다. 학교는 학생들이 자발적으로 모여 연극이나 그림과 같은 모임을 만들고 자주성을 길러가는 활동들을 환영한다. 보통 많은 학생들이 학교 활동을 통해 풍성한 삶을 누릴 수 있다는 사실을 자각하지 못한다. 게다가 대부분 교육과정과 연계된 활동을 해야 하기 때문에 대학 입시에 도움이 될 만한 활동들에 열정을 쏟게 된다.

  학교에는 여러 활동들을 위한 예산이 확보되어 있다. 학생들은 그저 아이디어를 내고, 관심사를 함께 나눌 친구들과, 모임을 지원해 줄 믿을 만한 어른을 찾기만 하면 된다. 학생들이 생각을 펼칠 수 있도록 장려하라. 학교의 자산은 학생들이 얼마든지 사용할 수 있는 것이다. 모임을 결성할 때 교실이나 컴퓨터가 꼭 필요한 것은 아니다. 학교에는 용접실, 도장실, 목공실, 3D 프린터실, 가사실, 컴퓨터실, 도자실, 원예실, 시청각실, 음악실, 체육관 등 다양한 시설들이 학생들을 위해 준비되어 있다. 이를 통해 학생들은 기술을 배우고, 계획을 세우는 재능을 가지게 된다. 일주일에 한 번씩 짬을 내어 만나는 풍부한 재능과 경험을 가진 학부모 네트워크도 중요하다. 직장인 부모들의 회사에도 학생들에게 도움이 될 만한 자원이 있을 수 있다. 방과후 활동

은 전 학교 생활 중에서 가장 재미있고 사회적인 활동이다. 학생회나 교내언론사와 같은 활동들은 학생이 스스로 선택한 분야의 리더십과 실천력, 문제해결능력을 기를 수 있어 학생들의 미래에도 도움이 된다.

  최근 국제학교에서는 다양한 나라 출신 학생과 가족들을 위해 국제 환경을 조성하는 프로그램들을 갖추고 있다. 학부모들은 유치원생들에게 책을 읽어주는 활동부터 난독증을 앓는 아이들의 학습 보조, 스포츠, 연극, 소풍, 도서관, 학급 담당 보조, 학부모회 봉사활동이나 이사회 임원 등 다양한 활동을 펼칠 수 있다. 이동이 잦은 외국인 가족들의 특성 상 이런 활동들은 매년 사람을 구한다. 이러한 학부모 활동들을 통해 다른 학생들, 선생님들, 관리자들 등과 친해질 수 있으며 가족이라는 울타리를 너머 더 큰 공동체의 일부가 된 느낌을 받을 수 있다.

  다시 한번 말하지만 “뿌린 대로 거두는 법”이며 때로는 뿌린 것보다 더 많은 것을 얻을 수도 있다! 그러니 자녀가 학교에서 누릴 수 있는 모든 것들을 만끽하도록 이끌어 주어야 한다. 학교는 새로운 사람을 만나고, 기술을 배우고, 사회성을 기르고, 의미 있는 일을 해낼 수 있는 공간이다. 부모가 먼저 모범이 되어 자녀를 이끌 수 있다. 학교에 다닌다면 마음껏 어울려라!
