Before we left Busan, every member of the Busan Global Friends team was eager to suggest ideas for our volunteering programs in Yangon. Preparing the whole program was more complicated than we had expected. We met every day to make educational materials to teach the children who lived in a country we had never visited before. The moment we first arrived at the school in Myanmar, every volunteer, including myself, was feeling a little nervous and excited at the same time.

 "Annyeonghaseyo!(안녕하세요!)" No one had expected to hear this 'familiar' greeting in Myanmar. We were thankful that they had prepared a greeting to welcome us.

 During the program, we tried to be friends with the students rather than teachers who teach knowledge. While volunteering, we hung out with the children like real friends. We didn’t understand each other's language, but it was no problem at all. On Friday, the last day of our schedule, it started to rain heavily. While we were leaving the school through the wet school yard, students waved their hands at us until we couldn't see them. We will never forget the special feeling we had on that day.

 Myanmar still needs to be developed in many ways and needs a lot of help. Even though you can hardly see the sun during the rainy season, I couldn’t think of any negative things about the country while we were at No.2 Basic Education Primary School in Kamayut. They knew how to have fun and enjoy themselves regardless the circumstances. The future of these smiling children is bright indeed.

 If the love and passion we shared with the children for a week could contribute to their future even just a little, our volunteering would have been worth it regardless the price. Furthermore, we received a lot as well. Each of us was reminded of the values that we easily forget in everyday life and thought about the meaning of what we were doing in Korea. We, who seemed to share nothing in common with the children of Myanmar, ended up sharing one of the most important memories in our lives and became

special friends with each other. We are confident the goals of the Busan Global Friends is being realized through this program and that it contributed to the world becoming a better place.

 일정의 모든 준비는 한 명 한 명이 적극적으로 내기 시작한 다양한 아이디어로 시작했다. 준비는 순탄한 듯 순탄치 않았다. 우리는 일주일의 수업을 위해 매일 같이 모여, 만난 적도 본적도 없는 그저 머나먼 타국 아이들의 얼굴을 막연히 생각하며 준비를 해나갔다. 처음 버스를 타고 학교 교정 앞에 내리던 날, 나를 포함한 모두는 약간의 기대와 긴장, 걱정 속에 아이들과 처음 마주하게 되었다.

 "안녕하세요!" 평범하게 듣고 넘길 이 한국어 인사를 미얀마 친구들에게서 들을 줄은 그 누구도 생각하지 못했던 모양이다. 봉사단원들은 약간의 상기된 목소리로 예상치 못한 아이들의 한국어 인사를 놀라움과 기특함으로 서로에게 전달하기 바빴다. 먼 나라 한국에서 자신들을 위해 오는 한국인 선생님들을 맞이할 준비를 아이들은 이미 하고 있었던 것이다.

 우리는 지식을 가르쳐주는 선생님이 아닌 아이들과 함께 하는 친구가 되고자 했다. 항상 인사하고 이름을 서로 묻고 같이 어울렸다. 언어는 잘 통하지 않았지만 아이들과 즐거운 시간을 보내는 것에는 전혀 장애가 되지 않았다. 금요일 모든 일정을 마치고 헤어지는 날, 마침 큰 소나기가 쏟아졌다. 비에 흠뻑 젖어가는 운동장을 사이에 두고 반대편 건물의 처마에 모여든 아이들은 한국으로 돌아가는 우리들을 향해 끝까지 손을 흔들어 주었다. 그 날을 잊을 수 없다.

 미얀마는 곳곳에 개척하고 더욱 발전시킬 부분이 많으며 아직은 많은 도움의 손길이 필요한 나라이다. 날씨도 우기에는 해를 한번 보기 힘들다. 하지만 미얀마 아이들과 함께한 학교에서는 이 모든 어두운 부분이 생각나지 않는다. 아이들은 지금의 행복을 즐기고 긍정과 호기심을 잃지 않았다. 이러한 아이들이 만들어나갈 미래는 까마윳 초등학교와 같이 아이들의 웃음으로 밝다.

 일주일 동안 아이들에게 우리가 주었던 사랑과 열정이 그러한 미래에 조금이나마 보탬이 된다면 이번 교육봉사의 의미는 말로 표현할 수가 없을 것이다. 나아가 우리도 아이들에게 많은 것을 얻었다. 각자 바쁜 삶에 치여 잊고 있던 가치들을 다시 상기했고 우리가 하는 일에 대한 의미를 찾기도 하였다. 미얀마의 아이들과 우리. 아무런 관련이 없을 것 같은 그들과 우리는 가장 중요한 것을 서로 공유했던 소중한 인연으로 남았다. 이 인연으로 인해 더욱더 세상이 변하고, Busan Global Friends의 진정한 의미를 실현하는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
