West Meets East in Busan’s Art World
루마니아 출신의 시모나, 부산의 예술을 만나다

“I see both sides and I really wantthem to exchange—it would be a great experience to get them together and let them influence each other," says Simona Soare. Being able to face and understand opposite sides seems to be a theme of Simona Soare’s life. The artist was raised in Ceausescu´s communist Romania, educated at universities in Romania as well as in both East and West Berlin and has lived her adult life in Europe and Asia. As a well-known international artist within the etching and printmaking circles, Soare is now based in Busan with her family, but her work is travelling worldwide.
Born in 1979 in the town of Galați, close to the delta of the Danube River on the Black Sea, Simona lived under communism during her childhood. “I remember very well the hard times when we had to get some special tickets to be allowed to buy bread, and we were only allowed to buy a certain amount of bread for each family.” Simona reflects and explains how the national economic plan also included restrictions on using gas, water and electricity. “But actually, when I look back now, while these were very tough times, they have just made me stronger as a person. It has made me able to endure difficult situations and to appreciate what I have”. Simona´s parents belonged to the social class of intellectuals, a group that was looked upon as potential troublemakers when compared to the workers. Shaking her head, Simona explains how difficult it was to travel even if it was only within the communist countries. To visit countries on the “other side” was impossible.
Soare remembers the revolution very well having seen through her teenage eyes. It happened around Christmas in 1989—the year of the popular uprisings against communist rule in Eastern Europe. The Romanian revolution was the last and the bloodiest in the whole region. "I was playing in the street and suddenly some of the people came back home early and they were very happy. They didn’t explain anything, they just told us to turn on the TV!” With a big sigh, Simona explains how the same day was also very sad, as many people were killed, especially in Bucharest. “My uncle called us from the capital and during the telephone conversation we could hear shooting," Simona remembers.
Simona went on to get her bachelor’s degree from the National University of Fine Arts in Bucharest and at the age of 24 she completed her master´s in Berlin. During her childhood, Berlin was divided between East and West with no chance of visiting “the other side” for ordinary people. Later, when the wall came down in 1989, the united city became one of the most vibrant contemporary art scenes in the world. “Berlin was a good example of the clash between the East and West and I was lucky to study in both kinds of universities and to experience the mentalities from both sides”.

서로 다른 것들을 마주하여 이해하는 것은 시모나 소아레(Simona Soare)의 인생 모토와 같다. 시모나는 루마니아 차우세스쿠 대통령의 공산 체제 아래에서 유년기를 보냈으며, 동독과 서독, 루마니아에서 대학을 다녔고, 성인이 된 후에는 유럽과 아시아에서 살아왔다. 판화가이자 프린트 메이커로 유명한 아티스트인 시모나는 현재 가족과 함께 부산에 거주하고 있지만, 그녀의 작품들은 전세계를 순회 중이다.
1979년 흑해 다뉴브 강 인근의 갈라츠에서 태어난 시모나는 어린 시절을 공산주의체제 아래에서 보냈다. “빵을 하나 사려해도 한 가족 당 정해진 양의 빵밖에 살 수 없었던 힘들었던 그 때가 아직도 생생히 기억나요." 시모나는 과거를 떠올리며 가스, 수도, 전기 사용 규제를 포함한 국가 경제 정책에 대해 설명했다. “하지만 이제 와서 돌이켜 보면, 그 힘들었던 시기가 저를 강하게 만들어 줬다고 생각해요. 어려운 상황들을 견디고 제가 가진 것에 감사하는 사람이 되었거든요.” 시모나의 부모님은 잠재적인 트러블 메이커로 여겨지는 지식인층에 속해 있었다. 시모나는 같은 공산국가를 여행하는 것조차 얼마나 힘들었는지에 대해 설명했다. “다른 쪽” 나라를 방문하는 것은 아예 불가능했다.
시모나는 10대 때 경험했던 혁명을 아직도 생생히 기억한다. 1989년 크리스마스 즈음은 동유럽 공산주의 통치를 상대로 혁명이 일어났던 시기였고, 당시 루마니아는 전 지역에서 민중들이 들고 일어났다. "전 길에서 놀고 있었고 갑자기 몇몇 사람들이 집에 일찍 돌아와 아무 것도 설명하지 않은 채 그저 TV를 틀라고만 말했어요. 모두 무척 행복해 보였죠.” 시모나는 크게 한숨을 쉬며 그 날은 많은 사람들이 죽은 슬픈 날로 특히 부쿠레슈티에서 많은 사람들이 죽었다고 말했다. “수도인 부쿠레슈티에 살고 있던 삼촌이 저희에게 전화를 했어요. 전화 너머로는 총성이 들렸죠.”
시모나는 부쿠레슈티 국립 예술 대학에서 학사를 취득했으며, 24세에 베를린에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 어린 시절에는 동독과 서독으로 나누어져 일반인들은 “반대 쪽”으로 갈 수 없었으나 1989년 이후 베를린 장벽이 무너지자, 베를린은 세계에서 가장 생기 넘치는 예술 도시 중 하나가 되었다. “베를린은 동서양의 교류를 가장 잘 보여주는 도시죠. 동서양 모두에서 대학을 다니며 양쪽의 사고방식을 배울 수 있었던 저는 참 행운아입니다.”

Her Work
시모나의 작품 세계
The artist’s history is reflected in her work. Her entrance on the art scene in South Korea was with a huge piece symbolizing peace. This creation arrived in South Korea before Simona and her family. The artwork entitled “The Peace Bird”, depicting a 20-meter flag with lots of hidden and apparent symbols of harmony, was created for the Korea DMZ Art Festival in 2013. By coincidence, that same year, Simona´s husband got a job offer in Ulsan and the couple and their two children moved from Germany to Busan.
Simona has experimented with several fine art techniques, but she fell totally in love with etching quite early on. “With etching I can create those details, and the depth of the colors are so intense! This technique is so close to me, it is almost like a journal where you can tell your intimate stories, reveal some of your inner thoughts.” Simona’s art reflects her life story, and the places she has lived. You just needs to know a little about Busan before you can recognize bits and parts of the city hidden in Simona’s art. “But even if you might think, oh I have been there, or I know this place, I try to show an absurd story behind it and to give a clue as to how to reflect about life.”
시모나의 작품 세계는 작가의 작품에서 고스란히 드러난다. 시모나가 한국 미술계에 내놓은 작품들은 평화의 상징이라고 할 수 있다. 작가의 작품은 작가가 한국에 정착하기 전에 한국에 소개되었다. “The Peace Bird”라는 작품은 20미터 높이의 깃발 작품으로, 화합을 의미하는 심볼들이 나타나있다. 이 작품은 2013 DMZ 아트페스티벌(한국)에 출품되었으며, 우연히도 같은 해 시모나의 남편이 울산에 취업하게 되면서 가족들이 모두 부산으로 오게 되었다.
시모나는 여러 순수 미술을 기법을 실험해오고 있지만, 판화(etching)에 빠진 것은 꽤 초기부터였다. “판화는 세세한 묘사를 할 수 있는데다 색의 깊이감도 아주 강해요! 이 기법은 제 이야기나 마음 속 생각들을 이야기할 수 있는 일기장 같아요.” 시모나의 예술은 자신의 인생과 자신이 살았던 장소들을 반영한다. 시모나의 작품에는 부산의 다양한 모습들도 숨겨져 있다. “제 작품을 보고 ‘나 저기 가 본 적 있어, 저기 어딘지 알아’ 라고 생각하는 경우도 있는데, 저는 작품 곳곳에 스토리를 넣고, 제 삶에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 표현하고자 합니다.”
TWO SIDES, ONE DREAM
두 개의 세계, 하나의 꿈
Taking a glance at Simona’s calendar though does not leave her much time to reflect upon her life in Busan. The next 6 months are packed with workshops in Japan, giving a guest lecture at Busan’s Pukyong University, exhibitions in Northern Ireland, China, Simona & Printing Machine Portugal and Japan and, from August, Simona will be teaching art to the elementary school children at Busan International Foreign School...but in spite of all the upcoming activities, Simona still has room for her dream. “My dream is to create an exchange between major artists from Asia and Europe. I know so many excellent artists from both sides and I would love to get them together and let them influence each other in some kind of joint workshop/exhibition”. For some time now, Simona Soare has been searching for ways to make the dream come true, but it is complicated to organize and to raise money as an expat, as you often need to be a native Korean to be able to apply for public funding. “But,” the artist says, “you should always have some dreams to fight for.”
시모나는 스케줄이 가득 차 있다. 향후 6개월은 일본에서 워크숍 일정으로 꽉 차있고, 부경대학교 초청 강의, 북아일랜드, 중국, 포르투갈, 일본에서 전시회도 예정되어 있다. 8월부터는 부산국제외국인학교에서 초등학생들을 가르칠 예정이다. 바쁜 스케줄 중에도 시모나는 최종 목표를 위한 시간을 비워두었다. “제 최종 목표는 아시아와 유럽에서 활동하는 아티스트들간의 교류를 이끌어내는 거예요. 전 동서양의 훌륭한 예술가들을 많이 알고 있고, 그들과 함께 모여 공동 워크숍이나 전시회를 개최하여 서로 영향을 주고 받고 싶어요.” 시모나는 꽤 오랜 기간 자신의 꿈을 실현할 방법을 찾아왔지만, 실질적으로 예술인들을 위한 지원금 신청이 자국민 위주이기 때문에 외국인으로서 자금을 마련하는 것은 복잡한 일이다. 하지만 시모나는 이렇게 말한다. “그래도 누구나 꿈을 가지고 있어야 하고, 치열하게 노력해야 합니다.”
