Baseball During a Pandemic?

We had a chance to talk with Sungmin Kim who worked with Lotte Giants until September this season. We wanted to know what it’s like watching baseball without fans.

Q.As a spectator inside Sajik stadium, how does baseball compare without the fans?

It definitely feels weird to be in the stadium without fans. Prior to this year, every baseball game that I had attended had had a crowd. There were big, sell-out crowds, and there were smaller crowds, but they were crowds nonetheless; crowds who paid to see professional athletes play at a very high level.Having no crowds and seeing the players out on the field definitely felt quite different. Players will tell you that there definitely is a difference in their psyche between having fans and not having them. I think the feeling is quite mutual on how much they miss each other. This is especially the case at Sajik. Sajik stadium is known for its passionate fan-base, and the raucous yet entertaining nature of the fan culture has been really missed. It's kind of eerie in a way. But at the same time, personally as a baseball fan, it's easy for me to get engrossed in the game in front of me, so I guess I got used to it?

Q. What measures did the league introduce when fans were not allowed into the grounds to try to achieve some engagement?

That’s not really my department, but as far as I know, the Giants used YouTube live. The cheermaster and cheerleaders would broadcast what they do during the games (I believe a bunch of other teams did the same as well). They also cancelled the All Star Game this year, but they did the voting nonetheless. Those who won the votes had the honor of wearing the All Star patch for the rest of the season.

Q. Obviously the lack of fans impacts on the league financially, but were there any new roles that emerged from the lack of fans?

Great question... but I honestly do not know how to answer this since I was not really involved with the marketing side of things this year. I think the fans themselves adjusted more to the digital side of things using social networking tools that were already in place (e.g. Instagram, YouTube, etc.). I think the league went into it all knowing that they are going to be bleeding out a lot of money from the lack of fans entering the venue. The ramifications of this are not yet known, so we'll have to see how it impacts the team long-term. It is too early to tell yet, but I would imagine teams are quite hurt by it.

Q. How was the process of fans re-entering the grounds (briefly) managed? And in your opinion, how would you go bout this process as social distancing measures are relaxed?

I do feel it was managed well. As far as I could tell, everyone followed the protocols and Sajik Stadium management had employees walking around the seats to make sure that everyone was following the rules. People were there to cheer, but they seemed to be quite aware of what was at stake in order for everyone else to be safe. I think, moving forward, I trust the league on how they would go about things, not only for the safety of the crowd in the stadium, but also for the public’s safety in general.

How would you say fan experience at Korean baseball stadia compares to the experience in MLB?

MLB games are chiller. I think it's much more of a relaxed, sit-down atmosphere, where you react however you want to react. KBO games are quite different. There is non-stop cheering and the energy is quite high. Kerry Maher, the famous superfan of the Lotte Giants, summed it up perfectly. He said,"Major League Baseball is like an opera, but the KBO is like rock n' roll”
