A focus on the Busan Asian Film School

Opened in October 2016 and located uphill from Geumnyeonsan station exit 2 next to the Korean Academy of Film Arts, the Busan Asian Film School (AFiS) so far has welcomed 59 graduates, called "fellows", from 23 Asian countries, in three successive groups (2017~2019). AFiS’ faculty is composed of three professors (Joyce Heeyoung Cho, Han Sunhee, Darcy Paquet), two invited professors (Jenna Ku, Lee Hojae) and three part-time lecturers (Mike Figgis, Ajay Rai, Raymond Phathanavirangoon). The school also invites many special lecturers, film professionals from Korea and abroad.
Focusing more specifically on producers, AFiS provides a six-month residency program aiming to foster the global film industry, and to be an incubator of international co-production, by training promising Asian talents (no restrictions based on academic qualification nor age) who will be the backbone of the Asian film industry. These filmmakers come to AFiS to get overall education in production, distribution, financing and marketing, and to apply that knowledge to their own projects. They can meet other Asian producers in internal networks like the NAPNet (New Asian Producers Network, an association of young, aspiring Asian film producers which aims at the discovery of diverse Asian contents and at the development of rational production systems and alternative business models), as well as many other international filmmakers since Busan acts as a hub city in the Asian film industry. Last July, the school also made a partnership agreement with École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière in France, mainly on international co- production support for alumni from both schools.
금련산역 2번 출구에서 올라가는 언덕에 위치한 부산 아시아 영화학교(Busan Asian Film School, AfiS)는 2016년 10월 개교 이래 3회에 걸쳐(2017~2019) 23개 아시안 국가 출신의 소위 "동료"라고 할 수 있는 졸업생 59명을 배출했다. 아시아 영화학교 교수진은 교수 세 명(Joyce Heeyoung Cho, Han Sunhee, Darcy Paquet), 초빙교수 두 명(Jenna Ku, Lee Hojae), 시간강사 세 명(Mike Figgis, Ajay Rai, Raymond Phathanavirangoon)으로 구성되어 있다. 물론 국내외 영화과 교수들을 초빙해 여러 차례 특강을 열기도 했다. 특히 프로듀서 교육에 중점을 둔 부산 아시아 영화학교는 세계적인 영화 산업 육성 및 국제적인 공동 영화 제작의 산실로서, 장차 아시아 영화 산업의 주축이 될 유망한 아시아의 인재 들(학력 및 연령 무관)을 위한 6개월 간의 연수 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 이 인재들은 제작, 배급, 투자, 마케팅 전반에 걸친 교육을 받고 자신들의 프로젝트에 이를 적용시키고자 부산 아시아 영화학교에 온다.
부산이 아시아 영화 산업의 허브가 된 이후, NAPNet(New Asian Producers Network, 다채로운 아시아 컨텐츠 발굴 및 합리적인 제작 시스템과 대안 비즈니스 모델 개발을 목표로 하는 젊고 뜻있는 아시안 영화 제작자 연합)과 같은 내부 네트워크를 비롯해 다른 많은 국제 영화제작자들과 교류할 수 있는 장이 되고 있다. 지난 7월에는 프랑스 국립 고등 루이 뤼미에르(École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière) 학교와 졸업생들 간 국제적인 공동제작을 지원하는 데 초점을 맞춘 파트너십을 맺기도 했다.

For the AFiS fellows, the residency’s ultimate goal happens in October during the Busan International Film Festival when they finally present their feature film projects in pitching sessions and business meetings at the Asian Film Market, with the aim and hope to peak the interest of potential partners and financiers. Of course, attendance of Korea’s other festivals, networking platforms and film markets, such as in Jeonju International Film Festival or Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, is also encouraged. Over the years, AFiS has grown various partnerships with other events and institutes in Busan, enriching the fellows’ experience during their stay in the city. For instance, the Busan International Short Film Festival now dedicates one of its programs to short films produced and/or directed by the fellows, making for an interesting, multicultural panorama of Asian cinema. Some fellows and alumni are also regularly invited by the ASEAN Culture House in Jangsan as speakers or professionals to introduce their own films and cultures. We reached out to former fellows to gather their impressions of their time at the school and in Busan. (read below)
부산 아시아 영화학교 교육생들을 위한 교육 프로그램의 궁극적인 목표는 부산국제영화제가 열리는 10월이다. 미래의 영화 제작 파트너 및 투자자들을 만날 수 있길 바라며 아시아 필름 마켓 피칭 세션 및 비즈니스 미팅에서 작품을 선보이는 자리이기 때문이다. 물론 전주국제영화제, 부천국제판타스틱 영 화제 등 다양한 한국 축제, 네트워킹 플랫폼, 영화 시장에 참여하는 것도 장려하고 있다. 지난 몇 년 간 부산 아시아 영화학교는 교육생들이 부산에 머무는 동안 풍부한 경험을 할 수 있도록 부산 내 여러 행사 및 기관들과 다양한 파트너십을 맺어 왔다. 그 중 하나인 부산국제단편영화제는 부산 아시아 영화학교 교육생들이 제작 또는 감독한 흥미로운 다문화의 면면을 보여주는 단편 영화를 선보인다. 교육생 및 졸업생들 중 몇몇은 아세안문화원에 강사나 교수로 초청 받아 자신의 영화와 문화를 소개하는 자리를 주기적으로 갖기도 한다. 부산 아시아 영화학교와 부산이라는 도시에서 보낸 시간이 어땠는지 교육생들의 감상을 들어보았다.

Representing 14 countries, the fourth group of 20 fellows should be residing in Busan and following AFiS’ courses from June to December 2020 (tentative dates instead of the usual March-October period, in contingency against the Corona virus). Sébastien Simon graduated from the E.S.E.C film school and from Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. His latest works as filmmaker include One-minded (2014) and The Troubled Troubadour (2016). He is involved with several film festivals in various capacities: programmer for the Busan International Short Film Festival and the Jeju French Film Festival, preselection member for the Slamdance Film Festival and the Seoul International Extreme- Short Image & Film Festival, and the workshop director for Rencontres Cinématographiques de Cavaillon.
세바스타앙 시몽은 파리 1대학 E.S.E.C. 영화학과 출신이다. 최근 작품으로는 <동心’ One-minded>(2014)와 <음유시인 The Troubled Troubadour>(2016) 이 있다. 부산국제단편영화제 및 제주 프랑스영화제 프로그래머, 슬램댄스 영화제 및 서울국제초단편영화제 예심 심사위원을 역임했으며 Rencontres Cinématographiques de Cavaillon에서 영화 제작 워크숍을 진행하고 있다.
