Meditation in Busan

I have been living in Busan for about ten years. I love hiking and sailing, and Busan is perfect! My only regret about living life as an expat is that I didn’t do it when I was younger.

I became interested in meditation about fifteen years ago. I practiced alone for many years while listening to dharma talks online, primarily those given by Gil Fronsdal (www. audiodharma.org) and Joseph Goldstein (www.dharmaseed. org). Practicing meditation has many practical benefits stemming from the fact that it creates a sense clarity about our moment to moment experience and creates a space to make smart decisions and avoid the traps our habitual thought patterns sometimes lay for us. Sometimes I forget to stay present, of course. That’s why we practice repeatedly, to train the mind. But I can honestly say that practicing mindfulness meditation has changed my life.

For example: I was an alcoholic for decades. The Busan expat community is a “small town” and some longtime residents may have seen or heard of my antics when I was drinking. It progressed to the point where I was really sick and a danger to myself and everyone around me. The turning point came during a long meditation retreat in Myanmar. During a meditation sitting the simple thought occurred to me that freedom from my suffering was possible. This is the Third Noble Truth, one of the core teachings of the Buddha, and I had heard it many times... but at that moment it spoke to me with direct relevance to the suffering caused by my addiction: freedom, from this horrible problem, was possible. Just that. As a result of this simple realization I felt like heavy chains had fallen away. Not long after that retreat I stopped drinking for good.

Recently I was approached by an outreach coordinator at a local temple, Hongbeopsa, about teaching a class. I had done templestays at Hongpeopsa and I know the head monk there, The Venerable Shimsan. His vision for the temple is to open it up to the wider community as a space for many kinds of practice. He hosts tea ceremony classes, soccer tournaments, arts and crafts workshops, and many other types of activities with the goal of introducing people, especially young people, to the dharma. I accepted the appointment and we are just finishing up our first series of classes, a six week “Introduction to Meditation” class focusing on the teachings in the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha’s practical instructions on bringing non-reactive awareness into our daily life.

The Buddha’s message is very simple: Life isn’t easy sometimes and things don’t always go according to plan. By accepting the fact that we can’t always get what we want, we can be free from a lot of the discomfort that we cause ourselves from unproductive thought patterns like worry, doubt, anger, and selfishness. It is possible to train our mind in more productive ways of thinking like kindness, generosity, and equanimity. This is the path to freedom. Meditation is part of that process.
