Haeundae Polar Bear Festival

Get your swimsuit ready! It is almost that time of year again. When most people think of Haeundae Beach, they envision the beach during its prime time; the summer. Beach goers sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the warm months while the beach is filled with umbrellas and beach chairs. Although this time of year is hard to beat, Busan hosts Haeundae Polar Bear Festival every January in the dead of winter which brings the crowds back to the beach and gets people to take part in a fun festival and brave the cold Pacific Ocean.

What is a Polar Bear Festival you may ask? Well, you won’t be seeing any actual animals at this festival although you may see quite a few cute mascots. Instead, you will see thousands of people wearing barely any clothes that have made the brave decision to jump into the ocean in the middle of winter. These types of festivals take place all over the world during the cold months of the year, but none have as much fun filled entertainment as Busan’s Polar Bear Festival, although I may be biased.

This year the two-day festival; filled with performances, activities, prizes, and of course the swim itself, will be held the first weekend of January from 4th to 5th. The festival is limited to the first 5,000 people and sign up information can be found at the website (www.bear.busan.com) or call 070-5154- 9944 between 10am and 6pm. Make sure to sign up soon as registration is open only until December 20th.

After you register you will be mailed a packet that will include some things to help you prepare for the event such as a swimming cap, towel, T-shirt, bracelet and vouchers that can be used at the event. Make sure you receive your packet before the festival so that you have your bracelet which will allow you to check your bags and participate in all the activities. If you do not receive your registration packet call the information number and they will get your sorted.

The first day of the festival kicks off the event on Saturday with fun performances to get everyone pumped up and ready to make the jump into the chilly Busan waters. The 2020 Saturday festivities will be going on from 12pm until 3pm, so make sure you get there early so you don’t miss out.

On Sunday, the festival starts up early with things getting started at 8am and continuing until the afternoon. The morning begins with more activities and performances. Haeundae Beach is packed with stations set up for people to take part in pre and post swim activities. The actual big Polar event with the countdown swim begins at 12pm, but it is important to get there early so you can store your belongings and prepare.

After you have prepared the time will pass quickly as you dance and stretch along with the performances, pose for photos, and keep moving to stay warm before you jump into the ocean. Then when 12 o’clock approaches the countdown will begin, “10, 9, 8, 7, ….3, 2, 1, GO!”, and with that the masses rush to the water to become official polar bear swimmers!

I remember the first year I went to the festival in 2014. I was going to do interviews for BeFM English radio, and my friend was going to take part in the Polar Bear Festival herself. I personally hate being cold, so the idea of jumping into the ocean in the middle of January seemed insane to me. But the atmosphere at the festival just sucks you in and makes you want to take part in the fun. As they blew the whistle for the event and people were rushing into the sea, I watched enviously on the sidelines and promised myself that next year, I would also take the plunge (literally).

So the following year, I decided that I was going to join in on my first Polar Bear swim. I had never done one before, and actually never thought I was capable of doing one. But after watching the year before, I figured that so many people of all shapes, sizes, and ages participate I decided to join in the fun as well. There is a 1km swimming event, but the majority of people who join the festival just jump into the ocean and swim around for a short amount of time and get out, so there really isn’t a need to train or prepare much for the event. So all I had to do was pick out what I wanted to wear, prepare a waterproof case for my phone, and go to the event with all of the things that are included in the registration packet.

I felt a little nervous and anxious about participating, but that feeling soon subsided once I arrived at the venue and started taking part in the pre-swim activities. They had various booths set up for people to win prizes, get face/body painting, and also activities such as a slide and other things. Luckily for me, the line to get face/body painting wasn’t too long, so I got a polar bear painted on my body to really look the part.

In more recent years the amount of foreigners attending has steadily increased, but my first year there weren’t nearly as many. So the photographers were really enjoying taking photos of my friends and I as we were jumping around with our polar bear body paint trying to stay warm before the gun went off.

I started to feel a bit nervous as the countdown to the swim started, but I wasn’t going to turn back now. I already had myself in a red bikini with a polar bear painted on my body at Haeundae Beach so I wasn’t really dressed for much else! So after the countdown I rushed into the ocean with the other masses of people and I too became a Polar Bear swimmer!

Honestly, to my surprise the water was much warmer than I expected and it was such an unforgettable memory. I have done the swim every year since, and hope to see everyone again at the 2020 Haeundae Polar Bear Festival
