If French expats in any foreign country were to celebrate three events, it would be their birthday, July 14th - the French National Day - and, of course, the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau.

 My travels have confirmed these three moments of conviviality in many countries and, for the second time, in Busan, thanks to the annual tasting of this much awaited beverage in November. This year the rendezvous took place during the launching of the exhibition 《Invitation au voyage / Invitation to a journey》by the French painter, Christine Capitant, who, herself, resides in this city.  

 Thanks to the collaboration of the Alliance Française de Busan and its partners: the French Institute / Embassy of France to South Korea, the Goeun Museum of Photography, Leica Cameras, BMW Dongsung Motors, as well as the French restaurant Les Planches with its associate SIB (Sustainable Innovation for Better Food), the francophone and Francophile community of Busan gathered on November 29th at the ART SPACE Alliance Française in Haeundae (www.artspaceafbusan.kr) for an evening which combined painting and wine, thus the visual and gastronomic pleasures.

 프랑스인이 해외에 거주하거나 여행 중일 때 빠지지 않는 축제 행사가 세 가지 있다. 본인의 생일, 7월 14일 프랑스 혁명기념일, 그리고 보졸레 누보 행사이다. 여행을 많이 하는 나는 여러 나라에서 다양한 친구들과 어울리며 이 세 가지 행사를 이미 경험하였고, 11월 출시되 는 보졸레 포도주를 음미하는 행사를 부산에서 두 번째로 즐길 수 있는 행운을 누리게 되었다. 부산에 거주하는 프랑스 작가 크리스틴 꺄삐땅(Christine Capitant)의 개인전 《여행으로의 초대(Invitation au voyage / Invitation to a journey)》 오프닝 행사에 참석했을 때였다.

 부산에서 프랑스어를 사용하거나 프랑스에 우호적인 사람들이 모여 그림과 포도주가 제공하는 시각적 즐거움과 미식의 기쁨을 함께 나누었던 이 행사는 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈, 프랑스 문화원, 주한 프랑스 대사관, 고은사진미술관, 라이카 카메라, BMW 동성 모터스, 프렌치 레스토랑 레 플랑시와 SIB(Sustainable Innovation for Better Food)와 같은 다양한 기관, 단체의 도움을 받으며, 지난 11월 29일, 마리나 맞은 편에 위치한 부산 프랑스 문화원 ART SPACE (www.artspace-afbusan.kr)에서 개최되었다.

 Christine Capitant presented a series of paintings, dating from 2008 to 2019, revealing a variety of themes culminating in a kaleidoscope of colorful perspectives: sea views, still life pieces, Brittany in France, landscapes of Africa or Latin America, but also her fascination with subjects of Asian painting : tigers, birds and flowers on Hanji paper. Last but certainly not least, the guest of honor also exhibited some ceramic pieces which she also created as part of her artistic genius. I do not think I was the only one to notice the enormous "wave" that welcomes the public at the entrance of ART SPACE, with a surrounding frame, also painted, thus adding to its strength and volume.

 The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and the admission is free of charge.

 The guests then gathered around a buffet which was prepared by the French chef Franck Lamache from Les Planches restaurant located in Songjeong Beach. With glasses in hand, toasting and enjoying the finger foods both salty and sweet, the guests were finally able to taste this Beaujolais Nouveau 2019, which fortunately did not have the taste of banana or raspberry, a rumor which has existed for many years. A French tradition since 1951, the Beaujolais Nouveau has since been joined by other young wines of all colors, according to the “tricolor flag” of Bacchus: white, rosé and red.   

 전시회에서 크리스틴 꺄삐땅 작가는 2008년부터 2019년 에 걸쳐 다양한 주제와 현란한 색채를 사용하여 완성한 작품들을 선보였다. 바다 풍경, 정물화, 브르타뉴와 아프리카, 아메리카 여행 스케치 등이 전시되었으며, 그 뿐 아니라 동 양화에 대한 호기심을 호랑이, 새, 꽃의 형상으로 한지 종 이에 표현한 작품과 도자기 작품까지 여러 점이 전시되었 다. 전시장 입구 쪽에 전시된 거친 파도 작품은 압도적인 비주얼로 시선을 끌었다.

 이 전시는 화요일에서 토요일, 오후 10시에서 저녁 6시까 지 무료로 관람할 수 있다.

 전시 오프닝 행사를 마치고, 방문객들은 자리를 옮겨 송 정에 자리잡은 프렌치 레스토랑 레플랑시의 셰프 프랑크 라마슈가 제공한 스탠딩 파티 뷔페 음식을 즐겼다. 손에 포도주 잔을 들고, 잔을 맞대며 건배를 외치고, 쁘띠 푸르, 마카롱, 핑거 푸드를 즐기며, 2019년 가을 출시된 보졸레 포도주를 음미하였다. 몇 년 전부터 소문에 의하면 바나나 맛, 라즈베리 맛이 난다고들 했는데 이번엔 다행스럽게도 그런 맛은 없었다. 1951년부터 자리 잡은 보졸레 누보의 전통에 오래 숙성시키지 않는 모든 포도주들이 이후 합세하여 오늘날 주신 바쿠스를 상징하는 기의 색깔은 단연 화이트-로제-레드 삼색기이다.

 Coming in large numbers, there were as many of my French compatriots as Korean friends, intermingling and becoming acquainted while sharing this moment of conviviality in a fantastic mix of both languages: French and Korean.

 The code of the host country was nonetheless respected with the exchange of business cards, worthy of a Prévert setting, including, but not limited to, the presence of students, professors, architects, musicians, lawyers, diplomats, translators, engineers, industrialists, designers, art gallery owners, artists, moviegoers and booksellers.

 If the French who were present that night chose Korea as a destination, it is perhaps not by chance but due to the mutual attraction that, for some years now, works like a magnet between the two countries thirsty for discovery, cultural exchange and renewal.

 한국어와 프랑스어가 즐거운 분위기 속에서 뒤섞이며 프랑스인과 한국인 친구들이 모여 서로에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 유익한 시간이었다.

 이런 상황에서 빠지지 않는 광경, 다들 명함을 주고 받는다. 받은 명함을 보니 학생, 선생님, 건축가, 음악가, 변호사, 외교관, 번역가, 엔지니어, 기업가, 레스토랑 오너, 예술가, 영화애호가, 고서적상 등 프레베르의 목록이 부럽지 않 을 정도로 각양각색이다.

 그 날 저녁 그곳에 모인 프랑스 사람들이 한국을 선택한 이유가 그냥 우연은 아닐 것이다. 한국과 프랑스 두 나라는 문화, 탐구정신, 새로운 것을 추구한다는 점에서 닮아 있기 때문에 수년 전부터 이 나라에 대한 관심이 증가하면서 서로에게 이끌린 결과인 것이다.

 Thank you Alliance Française, thank you Christine Capitant for this journey via《Invitation au voyage》! Upon my return to Paris, I will once again roam the quays, which are both beloved by the soles of my shoes and windswept by the falling winter leaves. Then I will turn my attention to Our Lady of Notre-Dame who is healing her wounds while being surrounded by scaffoldings, to catch the very same view as the Parisians who contemplated the construction of the cathedral in the Middle Ages.

 전시에 초대해 준 부산 알리앙스 프랑세즈와 크리스틴 꺄삐땅 작가님께 감사의 마음을 전한다. 이제 파리로 돌아갈 시간이다. 내 신발창이 수없이 닳은 세느강변, 겨울 바람 에 고엽이 쌓여가는 광경을 보면서 그곳을 다시 걸을 시간이다. 수리 복구를 위해 비계로 둘러 싸인 노트르담 성당의 상처가 차츰 치유되는 광경을 중세의 파리지앵들이 보았듯이 다시 바라볼 시간이다.

 Jean-Guy Penchenat is a so-called “bouquiniste” – a book seller on the quay of river Seine close to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. He is also a frequent globetrotter. He discovered Korea some six years ago due to a flight cancellation during a stop-over at Incheon Airport. Since then he travels twice per year to Busan, South-Korea. He started learning the language. His fascination for the Korean culture and language gave also birth to a new passion: collecting Korean translations of French books…

 쟝 기 빵셔나는 노트르담 대성당 인근의 세느강변 부두의 “고서적상”이다. 또한 여행자이기도 하다. 그는 6년 전 항공편 취소 때문에 인천국제공항에 스톱오 버로 처음 한국을 방문했다. 그 이후 부산을 1년에 두 번씩 방문하고 있다. 언어도 배우는 중이다. 한국 문화와 언어에 매료된 그는 한국어로 번역된 프랑스 책을 모으는 중이다.
