Liquid Arts 72H Film Festival
리퀴드 아트의 72시간 영화제
From December 5th until 8th the 72H Film Festival was held. Organized and hosted for the fourth consecutive time by HQ Bar in Gwangan - but for the first time under the Liquid Arts Network banner -, this three-day filmmaking marathon saw more than 30 participants answer the call. Experienced photographers and videographers, members of the Busan English Theater Association, visual arts students, storytellers, artists or simple film-lovers wanting to take a crack at the craft, figured among this year’s enthusiastic recruits, assembling a total of 6 different teams according to everyone’s preferred position, chosen field of interest and availability. Each team had to produce a short film within the imposed timeframe by adhering to the same playful guideline: to include one specific prop (an umbrella), one line of dialogue (“Kikki says hi”) and name of one character (Morris Myrex). The manner, importance and plot relevance of these three mandatory elements’ inclusion were then left up to each team’s appreciation, inspiration or even knack for rule bending. The resulting films were played on Sunday, December 8th in the evening at HQ Bar to a cheerful crowd - participants and acquaintances curious to see the fruits of their friends’ or relatives’ efforts. The audience was treated to the following: The Little Drummer Boy, Bombing Gilead, Message from Kikki, The Captain, Kikki says hi, The Last Request.
12월 5일부터 8일까지 72시간 영화제가 열렸다. 72시간 영 화제는 광안리 HQ 바에서 올해로 4회째 연속 개최되고 있지 만, 리퀴드 아트 네트워크 주최로는 처음 개최되었다. 3일에 걸친 영화제 마라톤에는 30명이 넘는 참가자들이 참여했다. 경험 많은 사진작가와 영상작가, 부산영어연극협회 멤버들, 시 각예술을 전공하는 학생들, 글작가, 아티스트를 비롯해 영화 애호가 등 영화 팬들이 모여 6개팀이 구성되었다. 각 팀은 정 해진 시간 안에 특정한 소품(우산), 똑같은 대사(“Kikki says hi”), 똑같은 등장인물 이름(Morris Myrex)을 넣어 단편영화를 제작해야 했다. 같은 세 가지 조건 아래 제작 방법, 중요도, 줄거리의 연관성과 더불어 각 팀의 감성과 표현 방법 등을 함께 평가했다. 완성된 작품은 12월 8일 일요일 저녁 HQ 바에서 참가자들과, 참가자들의 친구, 친척, 지인 등이 참석한 가운데 상영되었다. 상영작 6편은 다음과 같다: The Little Drummer Boy, Bombing Gilead, Message from Kikki, The Captain, Kikki says hi, The Last Request.
But then, it wasn’t just for fun: it was a contest, therefore awards had to be won! Namely: Best Film, Best Actor/ Actress, Best Use of Character/prop/dialogue, and Best Cinematography. The jury consisted of John Myrex representing HQ Bar, Jacob Smith representing the Liquid Arts Network, and Yeona Kim, a programmer of the Busan International Short Film Festival. The latter shared with us her overall impressions regarding the films and the event:
“The films entered of Liquid Arts 72H Film Festival were shot in only one or the minimum number of places due to the time limit and made the best use of those scenarios to convey a simple but significant message. Teams with the professional and the non-professional allowed them to display their wit and uniqueness that made up for the lack of shooting or editing skills and won the sympathy from the audience. With high praise for all the participants challenging with all their best, I wish all of the short films made by this festival to be widely known and introduced.”
하지만 순전히 재미로 작품을 제작한 것은 아니었다. 영 화제 경쟁부문 형식으로 출품되었기에 시상식도 있었다! 최우수작품상(Best Film), 최우수남우/여우주연상(Best Ac-tor/Actress), 최고의 캐릭터/소품/대사상(Best Use of Character/prop/dialogue), 최우수영화촬영상(Best Cinematography) 등이 시상되었다. 심사위원은 HQ 바의 존 미렉스(John Myrex), 리퀴드 아트 네트워크의 제이콥 스미스 (Jacob Smith), 부산국제단편영화제 김경연 프로그래머였다. 김경연 프로그래머는 작품들과 이 행사에 대한 전반적인 소감을 나누었다.
“'리퀴드 아트의 72시간 영화제'에서 만들어진 작품들은 짧은 시간 내에 1편의 단편영화를 완성해야 하는 시간적 제약을 극복하기 위해, 대부분은 한 장소 또는 최소한의 로케이션으로 찍을 수 있는 시나리오로 영화를 만들었어요. 그리고 이러한 시나리오의 특성을 살려 간결하면서도 메시지가 잘 전달될 수 있도록 하였죠. 팀의 구성이 전문가와 비전문가의 조합으로 이 루어졌기 때문에, 촬영이나 편집에 있어서 매끄럽지 못한 부분 들도 있었지만 재기 발랄함과 독특함으로 부족한 부분을 상쇄 시키며, 관객들의 공감을 얻어냈습니다. 쉽지 않은 도전인데도 불구하고 최선을 다해준 모든 참가자들에게 아낌없는 박수를 보내며, 이 영화제를 통해 만들어진 단편영화들이 더 많은 사 람들에게 소개되길 바랍니다!”
Yeona Kim’s seating in the jury marked a first collaboration with the organizers of the contest. Indeed, some of the films made in this 72H Film Festival will ultimately be selected by Yeona Kim and screened at the Busan Cinema Center as part of the 37th Busan International Short Film Festival (April 22nd-27th, 2020). They will be paired with another batch of shorts films made by a citizen association, thusly bringing Busan’s Korean and foreign communities together and making it a truly inclusive ‘local’ program by channeling everybody’s passion for cinema.
김경연 프로그래머가 심사위원으로 참여한 것은 부산국제단 편영화제와 72시간 영화제의 첫 협업이라는 의미가 있다. 김경 연 프로그래머는 72시간 영화제 출품작 중 일부를 선정해 제 37회 부산국제단편영화제(2020년 4월 22일-27일)에서 상영할 계획이다. 시민단체가 만든 다른 단편영화들과 함께 상영될 예 정으로, 영화를 사랑하는 모든 이의 마음을 담은 ‘부산만의’ 프 로그램으로서, 부산 내 한국인과 외국인 커뮤니티를 연결해 줄 매개체가 되길 바란다.
