ASEAN-ROK Food Street

On a chilly day in November I took a trip to the Busan Cultural Complex for Youth in Norimaru. I went for a very unique and tasty event that lasted ten days from November 15th through November 27th.I had gone to Jeonpo before but had never stopped at the Jeonpo Café Street. I found myself thinking about how lovely i twould be to have a cup of tea at one of the coffee shops there and reflect on the beauty of the street. But my daydreaming was interrupted by an enticing scent that seemed to lure meas if I were a mouse being drawn to a block of cheese, to the event that I was there to see. I followed my nose and soon I came across the tents that dotted the complex, smoke and steam billowing from around the openings in their canopies. I had arrived at the ASEAN-ROK Food Street.

I was not prepared for the size of the festival. The ASEAN group contains ten member countries, and along with their host, shared some of their best chefs to present a wide array of cuisine from their home country. Nasi Katok from Brunei, Nasi Lemak from Malaysia, and Shan noodles from Myanmar were only a small fraction of the items that were on display

When I arrived, I was excited because I always want to explore the unique tastes of a country. I have traveled all around the world, and one of the things that I always remember is the. food. It is something that everyone can appreciate. It not only brings families but also communities together; it is one of the things that cause tourists to flock to a region. The flavor of a food sticks around in our minds long after the dish itself has gone. The ASEAN-ROK Food Street gave the opportunity for ASEAN member country chefs to share a bit of their home with Koreans and allowed everyone to experience the flavors of many countries.

Each country had its own dishes. Nasi Katok from Brunei, Amok and Lok Lak from Cambodia, Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng from Indonesia, fried lemongrass jerky from Laos, Nasi Lemak and Satay from Malaysia, Shan noodles, Shan noodle salad, and fried tofu from Myanmar, Lechon from the Philippines, Bak Kut Teh from Singapore, Phat Thai, Phat Krapow Moo Sap from Thailand, rice noodles and spring rolls from Vietnam represented each respective nation. Halfway through the festival site I wished that I had room to taste everything. In addition to the food, all the workers and chefs were so friendly that I lost track of time talking with them. It was truly a fantastic time.

But that wasn’t the only reason for this festival. The ASEANROK Food Street also provided many programs to connect local chefs with those from overseas. It was an opportunity for culinary cultural exchanges that resulted in some truly amazing food fusions. Imagine for a moment the perfect plate of fries, golden and salty, with just a hint of steam rising from them. On top of that a unique blend of spices in a Thai sauce. Now to that add the salty, spicy and sour notes of Korea’s most recognizable food, Kimchi. Before you dismiss the idea completely, I must tell you that the smell was enough to get me to buy a plate of it. There are times I find myself craving the creation enough that I have started to experiment with how to make it myself at home. This was in the section titled ‘New ASEAN Cuisine.’

In this section, eight ASEAN-Korean inspired dishes were created. This fusion dishes were only available at the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Food Street and was never to be heard from again. I am sad about that because everything I tried was delicious. From Bulgogi Phat Thai to honey mango chicken, each combination was a surprise to my taste buds. I hope that this festival will happen next year and I will be able to try the Satay Ayam and Bulgogi Mie Goreng again. Once was not enough!

Rounding out the festival was a delight for the ears. Each country provided performers to entertain us. I watched a traditional Korean performance that had the audience clapping and cheering. It was a fantastic opportunity to sit and rest while I enjoyed the delicious food I had just ordered. It was a great festival and one that left me very full and happy. This was the first time the ASEAN-ROK Food Street occurred and I do hope that it will not be the last.
