Simon McCloskey and His Plans Ahead for ISB #ISBlearning
부산국제외국인학교의 새로운 교장선생님, 사이먼 맥클로스키
There are two schools for foreign residents in Busan, one is BFS (Busan Foreign School located in Haeundae-gu), and the other is ISB (International School of Busan located in Gijang-gun). The new head of ISB arrived last summer, so the Busan Beat met and held an interview with him.
부산에는 외국인들을 위한 학교가 두 개 있는데, 하나는 해운대구의 부산외국인학교, 다른 하나는 기장군의 부산국제외국인학교이다. 지난 여름 부산국제외국인학교에 새로운 교장선생님이 부임했다. Busan Beat는 그를 만났다.
M: Michael / S: Simon
M: Please introduce yourself; where are you from, what are your hobbies, which sports do you like, do you have a family here in Busan?
S: I’m Simon McCloskey, the head of International School of Busan. I am originally f ro m t h e U K , b u t h a v e been working overseas in international education for over twenty years. I am in Busan with my wife and two sons, who both attend ISB. When time allows, I love scuba diving with my family. I’m also a long suffering Arsenal FC fan.
M: 어디 출신이고, 취미는 무엇인지, 어떤 운동을 좋아하는지, 가족이 여기 부산에 있는지 등 자기 소개 부탁 드려요.
S: 저는 부산국제외국인학교의 교장 사이먼 맥클로스키입니다. 영국인이이지만, 20년간 해외에서 국제 교육 분야에서 일했어요. 현재는 아내와 부산 국제외국인학교에 다니는 아들 둘과 함께 부산에 있어요. 시간날 때는 가족들과 스쿠버 다이빙하는 것을 좋아해요. 또한, 아스날의 열혈팬이기도 하죠.
M: What are your impressions of Busan and ISB thus far? Which parts of Busan and Korea have you visited this far?
S: ISB is a supportive, warm and welcoming community. It has been great to get to know members of the school community. I have only been in Busan for a couple of months and my focus has been on the school, so travel outside of Busan has been quite limited. I grew up on the coast in Devon in the UK, so I am enjoying being back beside the sea. Since we have been here, we have enjoyed live music at the Busan International Rock Festival. We saw a great performance as part of the Busan International Comedy Festival. This week I am going to watch my first Baseball Game at the Lotte Giant’s Stadium and next week we will be going to see ‘School of Rock - The Musical’ at the Dream Theatre. Busan is a vibrant city and there are fantastic options for things to do with your family.
M: 부산과 부산국제외국인학교에 대한 인상은 어때요? 부산과 한국의 어디어디를 가보셨나요?
S: 부산국제외국인학교는 따뜻한 공동체예요. 학교 구성원들을 알게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 아직 부산에 산 지 몇 달 되지않아 부산 밖은 아직 안 가봤어요. 학교 업무에 집중해야 했기도 했고요. 영국 항구도시 데번에서 자라서 바다 근처로 돌아온 것이 매우 좋아요. 저희 가족은 부산에서 부산국제록페스티벌에서 라이브 음악을 들었고, 부산국제코미디페스티벌의 멋진 공연을 봤어요. 이번 주에 저는 롯데자이언츠 스타디움에서 생애 첫 야구 경기를 볼 거고, 다음 주에는 드림씨어터에서 스쿨 오브 락 뮤지컬을 볼 거예요. 부산은 활기찬 도시이며 가족과 함께할 수 있는 놀거리가 가득하죠.
M: What is your goal for ISB?
S: To offer an outstanding international education which prepares students to be globallyminded, life-long learners who are equipped with the skills to problem-solve, think critically, collaborate and communicate effectively. We also want to ensure that we develop empathetic learners who take responsibility for themselves, their communities and our environment.
M: 부산국제외국인학교에서의 당신의 목표는 무엇인가요?
S) 문제를 해결하고 비판적으로 생각하며, 협력하고, 효과적으로 의사소통을 할 수 있는 글로벌 마인드를 지닌 학생으로 성장할 수 있도록 좋은 교육 과정들을 제공하는 게 목표예요. 학생들이 공동체 의식을 가진 책임감 있는 인재로 성장했으면 좋겠어요.
M: What would you say are the biggest challenges that lie ahead at ISB?
S: Ensuring that the programmes, staffing and school capacity is aligned with the demand for school places that are required by expatriate families, Korean dual nationality families and Korean families who have previously lived overseas. This population can rise or fall depending on foreign investment in the area.
M: 부산국제외국인학교에 놓인 가장 큰 도전은 무엇인가요?
S: 부산 거주 외국인, 이중국적 가족 그리고 해외에 거주했었던 한국 가족의 요구에 부합할 수 있도록 교육 과정, 직원 채용과 학교 수용력을 보장하는 것이죠. 학생 인원은 투자에 따라 증가하거나 감소할 수 있어요.
M: What kind of role do you, as well as ISB, play in Gijang, as well as the greater Busan community?
S: As an international school we are responsible for not only educating children, but also ensuring that we have support networks in place for transient families. We also strive to be a part of the Busan community by organising fundraising events and community service projects that support worthy causes.
M: 부산국제외국인학교는 물론 기장과 부산 지역 공동체에서 어떤 역할을 하시나요?
S: 국제학교로서 저희는 학생을 교육하는 것 이외에도, 단기 체류 가족들을 위한 네트워크를 지원할 책임이 있어요. 또한, 모금 행사와 지역사회 봉사를 통해 부산 지역 공동체의 일원이 되기 위해 노력하고 있어요.
M: If you were a student, what would you say about ISB?
S: We aim to create an environment where everyone feels safe, happy and where interesting and engaging learning takes place. It is my hope that our students’ perception of the school aligns with our mission.
M: 당신이 만약 학생이라면 부산국제외국인학교에 대해 어떻게 말했을 것 같나요?
S: 저희는 학생들이 안전하고 행복하며 재미있는 학습이 이루어지는 환경 조성에 최선을 다하고 있어요. 학생들의 학교에 대한 인식이 저희의 사명과 일치하면 좋겠어요.
M: Asides from parent teacher conferences and meetings, is ISB networking with parents through social media, and if so, how can they find you?
S: We provide opportunities throughout the year for parents to come into school to find out more about what we do and why. We communicate regularly to parents with newsletters via the school website (www.isbusan.org) and share childrens’ learning with online portfolios. In
addition to this, we have a dynamic and active online presence. We regularly celebrate learning and share information about upcoming events and activities with our Facebook Page (www. facebook.com/BIFSKorea) or by using the hashtag #ISBlearning on Twitter (www.twitter.
