Building Your Bridges in Busan

You come out of your apartment and are waiting for the elevator when your neighbor joins you. You both stand there with uneasiness. Even though it is not customary for Koreans to acknowledge strangers they are curious about foreigners and there is our natural desire as social animals to want to say “Hi”. You ride down to the lobby and pass the security guard who you feel like you should acknowledge but you’re not sure what is the respectful phrase… another missed chance to build a bridge of connection in your Koran experience. And now explaining where you want to go to the taxi driver…

Let’s face it. You need the basic language skills to feel comfortable, make connections and get the most out of this unique experience of living in Busan. And yes! It is possible…without spending a fortune on private lessons. I don’t know of a city anywhere that does as much as Busan to help expats feel at home. And one of the city’s many initiatives is the free language classes offered by the 14 multicultural centers conveniently spread out around the city. I have found them amazingly flexible, allowing student to begin whenever they show up. They may ask you to take a placement test if you already have some level of proficiency and depending on how many levels the center is offering. The teachers are very patient and professional. The enthusiastic and mutually supportive students are from all around the globe. The courses include cultural orientation and field trips. It is a great way to start building your web of understanding and connections in Busan.

In addition to the multicultural centers, there is the Busan Global Center (www.bfic.kr) which offers 5 levels of Korean courses. Situated right across from City Hall on the 13th floor of the National Pension Building, this place should be a first stop for the city’s newcomers. It is a welcome center for foreigners living in Busan offering free help and assists integration through social and legal counseling. Its friendly staff can answer questions related to immigration, employment possibilities, schooling opportunities for immigrant children, and more.

Another place for Korean language learning is the Haeundae Cultural Center in Centum City (cafe. daum.net/haeundaefkc). Volunteer teachers helped me improve my language skills for two hours every Wednesday morning, from 10 to 12AM. They also offer sessions on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 6:30PM. The students participate in cultural activities, go on field trips, celebrate Korean cultural events, and make friends. I have had the same dedicated teacher, Kim Sung Won, for three years. She comes all the way from Ulsan every Wednesday morning just to help me and there are about 30 other volunteers as well. You can contact the Englishspeaking president, Ms. Yi, Keeyoung at 010-2623- 5436 for more information or just show up at the center conveniently located one block north of the Donghae Nambu metro line’s Centum Station.

My teacher and me

Of course, we can survive in Busan without Korean but the more we know, the more doors will open for us, and our experience and understanding of the people and the culture will be richer. So, “Kapshida!”
