Dae Ma Do, or Tsushima Island, is a ridiculously short ferry trip from Busan and I’m amazed it has taken me this long to do it. It’s time for you to do the same! What awaits you is a quiet, calm part of Japan where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. I was lucky enough to get there just as some of the spring flowers were starting to bloom.

 Getting there from Busan is easy; there are multipleferry companies that depart most days from the Busan International Ferry terminal near Choryang subway station. Booking through the companies is an option; however, for my trip I found it was cheaper to book through a travel agency (some Korean language ability is required). 

 The ferry to Hitakatsu Port in the north of the island took an hour and ten minutes. I was the only westerner on my ferry and I did feel a little out of place. That feeling washed away as soon as we entered the immigration area of Hitakatsu terminal. Here the Japanese staff seemed to look at me with pleasant surprise; like when you reach into a peanut M&M packet and find one with two peanuts fused together.

 A quick business matter: Obviously you are visiting Japan so the visa requirements that apply to your nationality for travel to Japan are applicable here. That said, as a holder of an ARC in Korea, the departure was extremely easy, and customs and immigration on both sides were fast and efficient.

 대마도(쓰시마섬)는 부산에서 페리를 타면 금방 도착하는 여행지인데도 이제야 다녀왔다. 이 글을 읽는 독자 분들도 똑같이 할 차례이다! 당신을 기다리고 있는 곳은 조용한 휴식과 멋진 경치를 선사하는 일본이다. 운 좋게도 마침 봄을 알리는 꽃들이 몇 송이 피기 시작할 때 나는 대마도로 떠났다.

 부산에서 대마도로 가는 것은 아주 쉽다. 초량역 인근의 부산국제여객터미널에는 거의 매일 대마도로 출발하는 페리 회사들이 여럿 있다. 페리 회사들에 직접 티켓을 예약할 수도 있지만, 여행사를통해 예약하면 한국어 실력이 필요하긴 하지만 조금 더 저렴하다!

 대마도 북쪽의 히타카츠항까지 가는 페리는 부산에서 1시간 10분 정도 걸렸다. 나는 페리에서 유일한 서양인이었고 약간의 이질감을 느꼈다. 이 어색함은 히타카츠항 출입국 심사를 통과하자마자 없어졌다. 일본 스태프들은 마치 M&M봉지를 열었을 때 땅콩 두 개가 붙어 들어있는 것과 같은 즐거운 놀라움으로 나를 신기해하는 것 같았다.

 여기서 한 가지 팁: 당신은 한국의 타 지역이 아닌, 일본을 방문했으므로 당신의 국적에 적용되는 비자 요건이 적용된다. 나는 외국인등록증(ARC) 보유자로 출국은 매우 쉬웠고 통관과 입국심사도 빨랐다.

 Upon arrival my first impression was that the architecture and scenery were completely Japanese; just that I was surrounded by Korean tourists. Immediately outside the terminal are a cafe, a car rental place, and a restaurant, all whose signs are printed only in Korean. I had read that transport wasn’t superb around the island, and Japanese public transportation is notoriously expensive, so after a couple of inquiries about renting a scooter I settled on a hybrid electric bicycle (JPY 1,400-to be returned by 4pm). With about six hours to burn through this electric battery I thought I’d better get some ramen before I set off.

 I began cycling clockwise around the northern tip of the island with my tourist map in hand from the bike rental shop. By the time I had the hang of the gears and electric support, I had already ridden about 4km and was arriving at the biggest supermarket in the Hitakatsu area. Japanese supermarkets are always fun to investigate and I was tempted by some tuna sushi rolls, a nice fresh orange (or Japanese cousin), some chocolate, and a can of Sapporo.

 The Observatory of Korea and the Toyo Battery Ruins are on the northern point of Tsushima, just a few kilometers after the supermarket, and up some serious inclines. It’s claimed that on clear days Busan can be seen from the observatory; unfortunately this day did not qualify. It is, though, a, great point to look out at the ocean and beautiful coastline of Tsushima. 

 Just outside the ruins is a picnic table where I had lunch. After lunch the leisurely downhill road toward Miuda Beach acted as respite after climbing up to the observatory, and a good opportunity to turn off the electric engine. Until this point I had been quite liberal using the electric assistance, but it was here that I realized that the battery was not going to last all the way back to the shop and some conservation would be in order. 

 도착 후 많은 한국인 관광객들과 함께 있었지만, 대마도의 건축물과 경치가 상당히 일본스러웠기 때문에 일본에 온 것을 실감할 수 있었다. 터미널 바로 바깥에는 카페, 자동차 대여소와 식당 등이 있었는데 간판이 모두 한글로 써있었다. 나는 섬 내 교통수단이 많지 않고 일본의 대중교통은 비싸기로 악명 높다는 글을 읽었기 때문에 스쿠터 대여점에서 오후 4시까지 반납하는 조건으로 1,400엔에 하이브리드 전기자전거를 빌렸다. 6시간이면 끝나는 배터리를 가지고 나는 출발 전 라멘을 먹으러 가야겠다고 생각했다.

 자전거 대여점에서 나와 여행 지도를 손에 들고 섬의 북쪽 끝을 따라 시계방향으로 돌기 시작했다. 전기자전거로 4km를 달려 히타카츠 지역에서 가장 큰 슈퍼마켓에 도착했다. 일본의 슈퍼마켓은 언제나 볼 거리가 많아 즐겁다. 나는 참치초밥롤, 신선한 오렌지와 초콜릿 그리고 삿포로 캔맥주를 샀다.

 한국전망대와 토요포대 유적지는 슈퍼마켓에서 불과 몇 킬로미터 밖에 안 떨어진 대마도 북쪽에 위치하고 있고 경사 지대에 있다. 맑은 날에는 부산이 전망대에서 보인다고 하지만 안타깝게도 나는 보지 못했다. 그래도 아름다운 바다와 해안선을 내다볼 수 있는 멋진 곳이었다.

 유적지 바로 밖에 피크닉 테이블이 있어 여기서 아까 슈퍼마켓에서 사온 음식들을 점심으로 먹었다. 식사 후에는 미우다 해변으로 향하는 여유로운 내리막길은 전망대에 오른 후 가쁜 숨을 돌리게 해줬고, 전기 자전거의 전기 엔진을 끌 수 있었다. 이때까지 나는 전기 걱정을 하지 않았지만, 이 지점에서 지금부터 전기를 아껴야 한다는 것을 깨달았다.

 Photos of the beach that I had seen meant it was definitely a  ‘must see’ for the trip and I wasn’t disappointed. Miuda beach is in a cove with white sand surrounded by rocky cliffs. The water is wonderfully clear and just begging to be swum in. Unfortunately, in late March it is still very cold! I did dip my feet in, much to the surprise and awe of the flock of onlooking ajummas. Surely this would be a perfect place to spend some time in warmer months as there is a campsite next to the beach, and a pension close by. Alternatively, it's only 2.5 kilometers from the ferry terminal so it is accessible by taxi or bus. 

 For the last cycling leg I took the scenic coast road from Miuda beach back toward Hitakatsu. With the battery creeping down and the 4pm bike curfew drawing near, I returned the bike and headed toward my accommodation. It was time for Japan’s main drawcard (in my opinion). Onsen time! Splashing out a little more on accommodation with an in-house onsen suddenly felt like the best idea I’d ever had. 

 사진으로 봤던 미우다 해변은 “대마도에서 꼭 들러야 할 곳”이었고, 직접 눈으로 본 미우다 해변은 절대 나를 실망시키지 않았다! 암벽으로 둘러싸인 하얀 모래와 맑은 물은 나를 물 속에 들어오라고 부르는 것 같았다. 아쉽게도 내가 갔던 3월 말은 여전히 매우 추웠다! 나는 아줌마들이 놀라면서 지켜보는 가운데 발을 살짝 담그기도 했다. 해변 주변에는 야영장과 펜션도 있기 때문에 따뜻한 계절에는 시간을 보내기 좋은 완벽한 장소가 될 것이라고 생각했다. 터미널에서 2.5km밖에 떨어져 있지 않아서 택시나 버스로도 갈 수 있다. 

 미우다 해변에서 히타카츠항으로 돌아오는 길에는 경치 좋은 해안도로를 따라 달렸다. 배터리가 거의 다 떨어지고 오후 4시 자전거 반납시간이 가까워져서야 나는 자전거를 반납하고 숙소로 향했다. 일본 여행의 하이라이트인 온천을 할 시간이다! 나는 조금 더 비싸지만 온천이 있는 숙소를 예약했는데, 돈이 전혀 아깝지 않았다.

A few quick tips for those not accustomed to a Japanese onsen
일본 온천에 익숙하지 않은 사람들을 위한 몇 가지 간단한 조언
 

1. Take off your shoes before you step onto any raised floor. The place where your shoes should be removed
should be clear. 

1. 계단을 딛기 전에는 신발을 벗어야 한다. 신발을 벗어야 할 곳을 확실하게 알아야 한다.

2. You have to get nude. Completely! But bring the small towel that you were given with you.

2. 당신은 완전하게 발가벗어야 한다! 하지만 작은 수건을 가지고 들어갈 수 있다.

3. You must wash yourself before entering the onsen. This can be done using the showers around the walls (modern style onsens). Or by dipping water out of the tub with the buckets provided in more traditional style places. 

3. 온천에 들어가기 전에는 반드시 몸을 씻어야 한다. 현대식 온천에서는 벽 주변의 샤워기를 사용하면 되고, 전통식 온천에서는 제공되는 바가지로 욕조에서 물을 퍼서 하면 된다.

4. The water is usually HOT! Take it slow. Don’t try to get straight in. Slowly pour hot water over yourself, building up to pouring it down the nape of your neck. Once it feels comfortable, get into the tub all at once. 

4. 물은 보통 뜨겁다! 바로 들어가려고 하지 말고 천천히 뜨거운 물을 조금씩 부어라. 그게 편안하다고 느껴지면 그때 욕조로 들어가라.

5. Once you are finished, be sure to use that small towel to dry yourself as well as possible before walking back up into the changing area. You don’t want to drip water where other people will get their socks wet. 

5. 샤워가 끝나면 탈의실로 돌아가기 전 다른 사람들의 양말이 젖지 않도록 반드시 수건으로 몸을 말려야 한다.

 The following day I ventured down the east coast of Tsushima. On the way out of town toward the supermarket I branched off to the left in search of Omega Park. For day two I rented a bike from a different location but the pricing around Hitakatsu seems to be a standard JPY 1,500/day. 

 The east coast is more mountainous than the northern part of the island and it was quite an effort to get up and over the ranges to Omega Park. It was, though, definitely worth it. There is a bathroom and plenty of tables for a picnic. It’s a great place to just relax and watch the ocean, and I was doing so alone! After quite a few kilometers on the first day I decided to take it easy and headed back toward the ferry terminal for food and a bit of shopping before I headed back. 

 As you head away from the terminal toward Miuda beach there is a restaurant that simply says, “Sushi Restaurant”, in English on the right hand side of the road. I treated myself to grilled eel on rice. The restaurant was great and they have English on the menu. After dropping off the bike I wanted to check out the duty free stores. 

 다음 날 나는 동쪽 해안을 걸었다. 마을을 벗어나 슈퍼마켓 쪽으로 가는 길에 왼쪽으로 틀어 오메가 공원으로 갔다. 이튿날에는 다른 자전거 대여점에서 자전거를 빌렸지만 히타카츠 주변에는 하루 평균 1,500엔에 자전거를 빌릴 수 있다. 동해안은 북쪽보다 더 산악지대였고 오메가 공원으로 올라가는 길은 정말 힘들었다. 그래도 충분히 그럴만한 가치가 있었다! 그곳에는 화장실도 있고 피크닉 테이블도 많았다. 느긋하게 바다를 구경하기 좋은 곳이어서 혼자 원 없이 바다를 바라봤다. 첫날 자전거를 꽤 많이 탔기 때문에 느긋하게 쉬기로 결심했다. 그 후 식사와 쇼핑을 위해 페리 터미널 쪽으로 다시 향했다. 

 터미널에서 미우다 해변으로 가는 길 오른편에 영어로 “Sushi Restaurant” 이라고 간단하게 써있는 식당이 있어 장어덮밥을 맛있게 먹었다. 그 식당은 메뉴가 영어로 써있었다. 자전거에서 내린 후에는 면세점으로 향했다.

 Another business matter: These shops don’t stock much in the way of wonderful Japanese whiskey or sake, so if you’re interested in bringing some back you’d best to get them from the supermarket. Liquor in Japan is already very inexpensive and the variety was far superior to the duty free stores. 

 Finally I had my boarding pass and was ready to depart. Again the process was very quick and quite lax. I had a great nap on the ferry and was back in Busan before I knew it; already thinking about my next ferry trip to Izuhara. 

 여기서 한 가지 팁: 면세점의 가게들은 일본의 훌륭한 위스키나 사케들이 많이 없기 때문에 슈퍼마켓에서 사는 것이 더 좋다. 슈퍼마켓의 주류들이 더 저렴하고 종류도 많다. 마침내 다시 부산으로 돌아간다. 출국 절차는 매우 빠르고 쉬웠다. 나는 페리에서 잠이 들었고 일어나보니 어느새 부산에 도착해있었다. 나는 벌써 이즈하라로 가는 다음 페리 여행에 대해 생각하고 있었다.

 Busan is a famous harbour city, but many foreign residents in Busan seem to be unware that they can travel by ferry. The 'Busan Port Passenger Terminal’, located near Choryang Station and Chungang Station, is a terminal where you can take ferries to Jeju Island, as well as nearby cities in Japan. 

 The Busan Port Passenger Terminal has the 'Busan Port International Passenger Terminal’ to five cities in Japan -- Fukuoka, Hitakatsu, Izuhara, Shimonoseki and Osaka --and the ‘Coastal Passenger Terminal’ to Jeju 

 부산은 항구 도시로 유명하지만, 많은 부산 거주 외국인들이 페리로 여행할 수 있다는 것은 잘 모르는 것 같다. 초량역과 중앙역 인근에 위치한 ‘부산항여객터미널’은 제주도는 물론, 일본의 가까운 도시들을 페리를 이용해 갈 수 있는 터미널이다. 부산항여객터미널에는 일본으로 가는 페리를 탈 수 있는 ‘부산항국제여객터미널’과, 제주도로 가는 페리를 탈 수 있는 ‘연안여객터미널’이 있다.

 부산항국제여객터미널에서는 후쿠오카, 히타카츠, 이즈하라, 시모노세키, 오사카 등 일본 5개 도시로 가는 페리를 탈 수 있다.
