Ever heard of the Busan Lotte Giants? Well, if you haven't, you absolutely must go to Sajik Stadium! You don’t need to know how to play the game, nor even need to know how baseball is played because nobody goes for the game, but for the atmosphere! Let's discover what a "game" is like, as seen through my eyes over the years. 

 부산 롯데 자이언츠에 대해 들어본 적 있는가? 못 들어봤다면 당신은 반드시 사직구장에 가봐야 한다! 사직구장에 가는 사람 중에서는 경기만 보기 위해 가는 사람은 없다. 대부분의 사람들이 부산의 야구 열기를 느끼기 위해서 가는 것이기 때문에 당신이 야구 문외한이어도 상관없다. 지난 몇 년간 동안 내가 사직구장에서 직접 겪은 “게임”에 대해 말해보겠다.

 Back in 1997, fresh and new, my co-worker, Sergio, took me to what would be the first of many Busan Lotte Giants games. The first thing I noticed was how raucous the fans were. It was still early into the season April, but you would think it was the World Series Championship or something. Even while the players were taking field, the fans were chanting, yelling and screaming! The Giants fans are known to be the loudest and craziest in all of Korea. It was a hot sunny day, but we didn't mind, because we had the best seats in the house, right in front of the cheerleaders! There are always three beautiful female cheerleaders, and one male cheerleader who get the fans even more into it. They are always near first base, a short distance up in the stands, where you will definitely want to sit, as this is where the fans are at their best! 

 I remember the umpire (ump) making a questionable call; well, at least in the eyes of Giant fans, so a guy threw an open can of beer at the ump, which skidded across the field, with beer spraying everywhere, and the can actually hit the side of his foot. He was looking into the stands for the culprit, but alas, to no avail. The Giants, as per the norm, lost, but most fans went home happy.

 1997년, 내 직장동료였던 세르히오 Sergio 가 나를 첫 부산 롯데 자이언츠 ‘직관’에 데려갔다. 내 첫 느낌은 자이언츠 팬들이 엄청나게 시끌벅적하다는 것이었다. 아직 시즌 초반인 4월이었지만 월드시리즈 정도의 열기였다! 선수들이 경기를 치르는 동안에도 팬들은 구호를 외치고 소리를 질렀다. 자이언츠 팬들은 한국에서도 가장 시끄럽고 열광적인 팬들로 유명하다. 아주 뜨거운 날이었지만 우리는 개의치 않았다. 왜냐하면 우리는 치어리더 바로 앞에 가장 좋은 자리를 가지고 있었기 때문이다! 그곳에는 항상 세 명의 아름다운 여성 치어리더가 있었고 팬들을 더욱 미치게 만드는 남성 치어리더 한 명이 있었다. 그들은 항상 가장 열정적인 팬들이 모여있어 가장 인기 있는 1루 근처 단상 위에 있다. 

 한 번은 심판이 (적어도 자이언츠 팬들 눈에는) 논란이 있을만한 콜 사인을 한 적이 있다. 한 관중이 심판에게 맥주 캔을 던졌고 그것은 경기장을 가로질러 심판의 발에 맞았다. 심판은 범인을 찾기 위해 스탠드를 쳐다보았지만 소용이 없었다. 자이언츠는 일방적으로 졌지만 대부분의 팬들은 기뻐하며 집으로 돌아갔다.

 In 2007, I returned, this time with my wife, Carol. Much of the same had occurred, but the fans were noticeably calmer (no beer can was thrown), but still very noisy, cheering the whole way through. The technology had improved a bit too, as they had a kiss cam. I remember seeing shy couples kiss, and one pair of expat friends kiss, too. The one new thing was that towards the middle innings, they handed out orange plastic bags, meant to clean up your mess, but everyone wore them on their heads instead! Of course, when in Rome, so we did the same. The Giants lost, but the atmosphere won us over again. 

 2007년, 나는 아내 캐롤 Carol 과 함께 또 한 번의 ‘직관’을 갔다. 많은 것이 그대로였지만 팬들이 눈에 띄게 차분해졌다. (맥주 캔도 던지지 않았다!) 하지만 끝까지 열광적으로 환호하는 것은 그대로였다. 키스 타임 전용 카메라도 생길 만큼 기술도 약간 발전했다. 한 쌍의 수줍은 커플과 외국인 커플이 키스를 한 것으로 기억한다. 한가지 새로운 사실은 중반부 이닝에 그들은 쓰레기를 치우라는 의미의 오렌지색 비닐 봉투를 나누어 주었다. 하지만 모든 사람들이 그것을 머리에 쓰고 있는 것이었다. 로마에 가면 로마법을 따르듯이 우리도 똑같이 했다. 자이언츠는 졌지만 분위기는 우리가 또 이겼다.

 Fast forward to 2016. My mother-in-law, nephews and friends from Busan had never been to a Giants game, so, we all went. Not knowing food and beer could be bought inside the stadium, we bought rotisserie chicken and beer outside. Giants lost! 

 2016년, 장모님, 조카들, 부산 친구들이 사직구장에 가본 적이 없어서 우리는 다같이 가게 되었다. 경기장 안에서 음식과 맥주를 살 수 있다는 것을 몰랐기 때문에 우리는 밖에서 치킨과 맥주를 사갔다. 자이언츠는 지고 말았다!

 We returned in 2017, this time with my father, Jim, and many friends. The theme of the night was zombies, so the cheerleaders were zombies and the stadium had spooky lights. One unfortunate change was that we weren't allowed to bring drinks in from outside, and even the beers bought inside the stadium had to be transferred into a cup. The beer foamed up, so it wasn't great!

 This time around, Lee Dae-Ho, who had played in the big leagues (Major League Baseball) in North America, hit enough home runs that the Giants finally won! Win or lose, the fans always win, as it's an experience unlike any other.

 2017년, 아버지와 짐 Jim 과 많은 친구들과 함께 다시 한 번 갔다. 그 날의 테마는 좀비여서 치어리더들은 좀비 분장을 했고 경기장은 으스스한 불빛을 가지고 있었다. 한 가지 좋지 않은 변화는 밖에서 맥주를 반입하는 것이 허용되지 않는다는 것과 경기장 안에서 구입한 맥주조차도 반드시 컵에 따라서 마셔야 한다는 것이었다. 맥주가 거품이 많아져서 별로 좋지 않았다. 

 이번에는 메이저리그에서 뛰었던 이대호가 결승 홈런을 쳤고 경기를 이겼다! 경기에서 이기든 지든 팬들은 항상 이긴 기분이었다.

 There is also a baseball museum nearby. It might be worth checking out. If it's the off season, I'd recommend a pro basketball game in the same vicinity. The Busan KT Sonicboom play at the Sajik Arena. 

 사직구장 근처에는 자이언츠 박물관도 있는데 한 번쯤은 둘러볼 만하다. 비시즌이라면 근처에서 열리는 프로농구 경기를 추천한다. 부산 KT 소닉붐의 경기가 사직실내체육관에서 개최된다. 

You can buy them on the team's website, but It's not very user friendly in English, so enlist the help of Korean friends, or just buy tickets at the stadium the day of the game. I've gone in advance to buy the tickets, which you can do, but they are sold only when the Giants are playing and/or in the evening. Tickets are not expensive (KRW 5,000 ~ KRW 55,000). 

✔ 사직구장 가는 법 : 지하철 3호선을 타고 사직역이나 종합운동장역에 하차

✔ 티켓팅 하는 법 : 롯데 자이언츠 홈페이지에서 구매 가능하지만, 영어 안내가 잘 안 되어 있어서 한국 친구에게 도움을 요청하거나 경기 당일 경기장에 가서 사는 방법이 있다. 나는 표를 사기 위해 일찍 갔다. 표는 경기가 있는 날 저녁에만 판매하고 있으며, 비싸지는 않다. (5,000원~55,000원)
