 The United Nations (UN) was a fledgling organization—not yet five years old— when it suddenly faced one of its greatest challenges: the Korean War. The UN fought alongside the Republic of Korea (South Korea) against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and their allies, the Chinese. In memory of those who gave their lives to fight for the freedom of South Korea, the UN Peace Memorial Hall was built in Busan. This one-of-a-kind UN museum was opened in 2014 and has five floors containing, among other things, four exhibition halls and a 4D movie theater.

 The Korean War Hall is a permanent exhibition hall on the first floor. Here one can learn about the history of the war through written descriptions, pictures, videos, music and objectsThe objects are particularly interesting. Magazine covers from the period, cake in a can, and General Douglas MacArthur's corn pipe, transport one back in time. A photo of a UN soldier sharing his rations with young Korean child, humanizes the war. Near the end of the hall, one crosses the 38th parallel into darkness. Good use of light, sound, and figures is made to place one in the midst of the war.

 The UN Allied Nations Hall is a permanent exhibition hall on the second floor in honor of the 21 nations that assisted South Korea during the war. One can, among other things, listen to the allied nations' national anthems and see objects from them. Coming from South Africa, the author of this article was filled with pride and appreciation that South Africa's contribution is remembered and celebrated.

 The Korean War is, rather ironically, called the “Forgotten War”. How can a war be forgotten when it has lasted for nearly 70 years? When countless lives have been lost? When families were and remain torn apart? When threats of “fire and fury” still regularly make headlines across the world? Wandering through the above halls in the UN Peace Memorial Hall, one cannot help but reflect upon the fact that this museum is unlike any other. It might appear like other war museums at first, but upon reflection it feels much more alive. Until the war has finally been concluded, the jury is out on how to truly judge the things depicted in this museum.

 The UN International Peace Hall is the last permanent exhibition hall and is also located on the second floor. One can learn more about the UN and its past and present activities here. The UN is often criticized for not doing more to end conflicts, but that criticism seems rather harsh in light of the fact that (according to one of the posters in the hall) the UN's military budget is less than 0.5% of the world's military spending. Murals that cover the walls and spill out onto the floor provide good locations for photographs.

 Doctors on the Frontline is a special exhibition on the first floor in honor of the five nations—Sweden, India, Denmark, Norway, and Italy—that sent medical service units to aid South Korea during the Korean War. The exhibition can be viewed until 15 May 2018. Another special exhibition, Matthew B. Ridgway, is on the second floor. It honors General Ridgway as one of the “War Heroes of the UN”. It can be seen until 31 August 2018. 

 The 4D Movie Theater is on the first floor. The author saw a 15 minute film which had a combat medic as the main protagonist. Please note that very young children might find the moving chairs, loud gunshot noises, and contents of the film frightening. The graphics are a bit dated, but the film does a good job of immersing viewers in a battle. The film is in Korean, but one can request for English subtitles to be displayed before the screening.

 The fourth and fifth floors have Observatories from where one can get impressive views of the UN Memorial Cemetery situated just over 200 meters down the hill. In fact, there are many cultural spots within walking distance of the UN Peace Memorial Hall such as the Busan Culture Center and the National Memorial Museum of Forced Mobilization under Japanese Occupation. This area would therefore be an ideal destination for a culture day trip.

 All the above exhibitions are in Korean and English. Although the English texts tend to contain language errors, one can evertheless easily understand what is being written. English tours of the museum are available between 10:00 and 17:00 from Thursdays to Sunday. To arrange for a tour, apply online at least a week in advance at http://unpm.or.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=reserv_group&mode=step1. Please note this part of the website seems to be available only in Korean; you might have to get a Korean speaker 'sassistance to complete the application. Special events are held from time to time, and there are activities catering for children. Do not feel shy to ask the UN Peace Memorial Hall's staff for further information or assistance. The author found all the staff members he encountered to be very friendly and helpful.

 한국전쟁이 일어난 시점은 유엔이 설립된 지 겨우 5년 밖에 되지 않은 시점이었다. 당시 유엔은 대한민국 남한의 편에서 북한에 대항하여 싸웠다. 대한민국의 자유를 위해 생명을 바친 숭고한 이들을 기리기 위한 유엔평화기념관이 부산에 설립되었다. 유엔평화기념관은 4개의 전시관과 4D 상영관 등을 포함한 5층짜리 건물로, 2014년 개관했다. 

 UN한국전쟁관은 1층 상설전시관이다. 이곳에서는 설명문, 그림, 영상, 음악, 전시물을 통해 전쟁의 역사를 배울 수 있다. 전시되어있는 전시품들은 그 시대의 잡지, 케이크 캔, 더글라스 맥아더 장군의 콘파이프, 당시의 교통수단 등 매우 흥미롭다. 한국인 아이에게 자신의 식량을 나누어주는 UN군의 사진은 전쟁 중의 인류애를 보여준다.

 전시관 끝 쪽에서는 휴전선을 건너 어둠 속으로 들어간다. 빛, 소리, 피규어를 적절히 사용하여 전쟁 한복판에 있는 듯한 경험을 하게 한다. UN참전기념관은 2층에 있는 상설전시관으로, 한국전쟁에서 대한민국을 도왔던 21개의 동맹국을 기념하는 전시관이다. 이곳에서는 동맹국의 국가를 들으며 전시를 관람할 수 있다. 남아프리카 출신인 나는, 한국전쟁 때 고국의 도움을 한국에서 기억하고 기념한다는 사실에 자부심과 고마움을 느꼈다.

 아이러니하게도 한국전쟁은 “잊혀진 전쟁”이라고도 불린다. 거의 70년이나 지속되고 있는 전쟁을, 셀 수 없이 많은 사람들이 목숨을 바친 전쟁을, 아직도 수많은 이산가족이 남아있는 전쟁을, “화염과 분노”라는 단어가 아직도 전세계의 헤드라인에 주기적으로 오르는 이 전쟁을 어떻게 잊을 수 있다는 걸까? 

 유엔평화기념관 전시관들을 돌아다니다 보면, 이곳이 다른 박물관과는 다르다는 것을 알게 된다. 얼핏 보면 다른 전쟁기념관과 비슷해 보이지만, 자세히 들여다 보면 훨씬 잘 조성해놓았다는 것을 알 수 있다. 아직 전쟁이 끝나지 않은 지금으로써는, 이곳에 전시된 것들을 아직은 역사에 어떻게 남을지 평가할 수 없다.

 마지막 상설전시관인 UN국제평화관 역시 UN참전기념관과 같은 층인 2층에 있다. 이곳에서는 UN과 UN의 과거, 현재에 대해 배울 수 있다. UN은종종 갈등 종식을 위해서 아무런 조치도 취하지 않는다는 비난을 받기도 하지만, UN군의 예산이 전세계 군 예산의 0.5%에도 미치지 못한다는 점(전시관 내 포스터에 따른 내용)을 감안하면 조금 가혹한 평가가 아닌가 생각한다. 벽면과 바닥의 벽화들은 사진 찍기에 좋은 장소이다. 

 <전선의 의사들>은 1층에 기획전시실에서 개최되고 있는 기획전으로, 전쟁 당시 한국에 의료진을 파견한 스웨덴, 인도, 덴마크, 노르웨이, 이탈리아 등 5개국을 기린 곳이다. 해당 전시는 5월 15일까지 관람 가능하다. 또 다른 전시회인 <매튜 B. 리지웨이(Matthew B. Ridgway)>는 2층 UN참전기념관에서 진행되고 있다. “UN 참전 영웅” 리지웨이 장군을 기념하는 이 전시는 8월 31일까지 관람 가능하다.

 4D 영화관은 1층에 있다. 여기서 의무병이 주인공으로 등장하는 15분짜리 단편영화를 보았다. 하지만 어린 아이들에게는 이곳의 움직이는 의자, 커다란 총소리, 내용 등 영상이 무서울 수도 있다. 조금 오래된 영상이지만 관객들이 몰입하기에는 충분하다. 한국어로 되어 있지만 상영 전 영어 자막 추가를 요청할 수 있다. 

 4, 5층에는 200미터 아래 언덕에 있는 유엔기념공원을 한눈에 내려다볼 수 있는 전망대가 있다. 실제로 유엔평화기념관에서 걸어갈 수 있는 거리 내에는 부산문화회관, 국립일제강제동원역사관 등 다양한 문화 시설이 있다. 당일치기 문화 여행을 즐기고 싶은 이에게 최적의 여행지이다.

 위 모든 전시는 국문과 영문을 지원한다.

 영문 해설에 오역이 좀 있긴 하지만 그 의미를 파악하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 목요일부터 일요일 오전 10시부터 오후 5시까지는 영어 도슨트를 운영하고 있으며, 예약은 방문 1주일 전까지 공식 홈페이지를 통해 하면 된다. 전시해설 신청 페이지는 한국어만 지원되므로, 한국어 가능자의 도움을 받는 편이 좋겠다.

 유엔평화기념관에는 어린이들을 위한 프로그램을 포함, 다양한 이벤트들이 수시로 개최된다. 도움이 필요하거나 궁금한 게 있으면 유엔평화기념관 상주 직원에게 물어보면 된다. 내가 마주한 모든 직원들은 무척 친절하였고, 많은 도움을 받을 수 있었다.
