MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7 (2013)

 I met a young ex-con once.

“What's the first thing you did whenyou got out of prison?” I asked, expecting a profound response.

“I went straight to KFC,” he said matter-of-factly. Seeing the incredulity on my face he added, “They only gave us meat once a week... so I kept craving fried chicken.” Why do prison stories captivate (some of) us so? The South Korean film, “Miracle in Cell No. 7”, is another one that taps into our fascination with the genre. It is about a mentally challenged single father who is wrongfully convicted of murder. Neither fully comprehending nor conc e rned about hi s own predicament, his only thoughts are for his 6-year-old daughter. Somehow, they are miraculously reunited in prison.

The film alternates deftly between the present and the past and between comedy and drama. It has real heart; even though littered with illogical occurrences, it nevertheless manages to reduce many viewers to tears of joy and sadness. This is due to skillful directing and impressive performances by the lead actors. Given its content and mix of genres, it reminds one a lot of the Oscar-winning Italian film “Life is Beautiful”.

“Miracle in Cell No. 7” was a huge commercial success. Almost 13 million tickets were sold, which is, coincidentally, the 7th most ever for a Korean film. It is hard to imagine how such a film could be a blockbuster in most places in an era where big budget, superhero-type movies dominate the box office.

Not all Koreans I interviewed had positive things to say about the film, though. One had refused to even watch the film. All her friends told her that they had left the cinema sobbing, so she was determined to avoid doing the same. Another Korean said that he was sick and tired of these South Korean films that kept trying to make him cry. I can relate to that sentiment; I have been avoiding films from my home country of South Africa, because they tend to be too political and depressing. However, maybe because I have daughters, “Miracle in Cell No. 7” caught me hook, line, and sinker.

Louis de Jager has lived in Busan since 2012 and liked the place so much that he has applied for Korean citizenship. Soon he will hopefully be able to officially identify himself as being “South African South Korean”.
